Noreiga was a tidy off-spinner who spent most of his career as a good club bowler. Indeed, before 1970-71, he had played just 3 First-Class matches in nearly a decade’s association with the game.
However, with the West Indian bowling reduced to wafer-like thinness, the selectors called this ageing spinner in his mid-30s to add substance to the attack against the visiting Indians. And he responded with 17 wickets at 29 apiece, by some distance the leading bowler of the side. This included 9 for 95 in Port-of-Spain, which still remains the only nine-wicket haul by a West Indian bowler.
Yet, the 4 Tests he played against India remained his only ones, despite the fact that they fetched him 17 wickets. By next season, he had lost his edge. Additionally, Lance Gibbs, the great off-spinner who had temporarily lost form, regained his wicket-taking ability. As a result, Noreiga faded into obscurity once again in cricketing terms and played only a few First-Class matches after that, though he finished with a sub-30 bowling average.
However, he remained a regular sight at Port of Spain during any major cricket match.
