James Pattinson Biography

A right-arm fast bowler from Victoria, Pattinson won the Man of the Match award on Test debut, against New Zealand at Brisbane in December 2011. He claimed 14 wickets in the series to start with a bang, and the touring Indians were subjected to a similar treatment as Pattinson collected 11 wickets in 2 Tests. He was a mere 21.

It looked like Pattinson was the next big thing in Australia’s fast bowling arsenal, but a string of stress fractures in his back pegged him back to such an extent that he began studying to earn a diploma in Building and Construction. Two of the injuries that Pattinson suffered were after the 2013 Ashes, forcing him to rework his bowling action.

Injuries have plagued the career of one of most exciting Australian fast bowlers: Pattinson could not play enough Test cricket compared to his peers in the initial years. After an impressive debut, an injury to his rib ruled Pattinson out of the Australian summer in 2012. He had also missed three months of cricket earlier due to a foot injury.

Pattinson reworked on his bowling action with Craig McDermott and made a cracking return in the First-Class circuit. In the 2016-17 Sheffield Shield he bagged 24 wickets for Victoria at 17.41, playing a key role in their title win. He was not only quick, but he also moved the ball dangerously — a sign of remarkable improvement with the new action.

Pattinson’s performances even spurred the Australian selectors to approach him to replace Mitchell Starc for the last 2 Tests in India for the 2016-17 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. But having rushed his comeback and risked himself to injuries, Pattinson asked not to be considered for the India tour. Instead, he landed himself a County contract with Nottinghamshire and claimed 13 wickets in the first 2 games.

Interestingly, Darren, his elder brother by 10 years, played a Test for England in 2008. They are only the third set of brothers (after the Trotts and Hearnes) to play Test cricket for two countries — though both Albert Trott and Frank Hearne played for two countries themselves.
