James Taylor flirted with Test cricket in 2012, though he did not cover himself with rose petals in any of his three innings he played. Though he featured in what was to be a match-saving partnership at Headingly what would have dented his confidence was Kevin Pietersen’s unwarranted criticism of how, owing to his diminutive size, he wasn’t authoritative enough against a rampaging South African attack. He was discarded prematurely, well before he had an opportunity to find his feet at the International level.
Taylor was a prolific middle-order batsman for Nottinghamshire in First-Class cricket, but his numbers in List A cricket were even more impressive. Puny in size, Taylor took to the shorter format of the game like a fish to water. He had a highly successful 2014 in List-A cricket.
His astronomical numbers in List-A cricket, combined with England’s dwindling fortunes in One-Day cricket, earned him a thoroughly deserved recall into the English side on the tour of Sri Lanka in November 2014. With a stroke of luck in the form of a one-match ban on Alastair Cook, opportunity came down the chimney in the fourth One-Day International of the series, which was to be his second coming. He narrowly missed out on a maiden ODI hundred on his return, and followed that up with another innings of substance in the fifth ODI. An impressive innings against Australia in the 2015 World Cup meant that he had cemented his place in the England ODI side.
A Test recall came later in 2015-16, but sadly it was his final foray in international cricket. Taylor was diagnosed with a serious heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Arrhythmia (ARVC) which compelled him to retire from all forms of international cricket at just 26 years of age.
