Jasprit Bumrah is a rare specimen. Aside from the fact that his bowling action is somewhat unconventional — his bowling arm never bends at any point in his delivery stride — he is a seamer who thrives on yorkers. In an age where the use of the yorker has been almost forgotten, Bumrah comes as a breath of fresh air.
Bumrah first came to prominence with IPL 2013. Making his debut for Mumbai Indians against Royal Challengers Bangalore, he recovered from getting hit for three boundaries in his first four balls to finish with 3 for 32 including the wicket of Virat Kohli.
Bumrah's progression since then has been swift and impressive. Having already established himself as the leader of Gujarat's pace attack, Bumrah climbed the ranks playing for India A as well. An international call-up seemed unlikely though, till destiny knocked on Bumrah's doors.
It took two injuries — first to Mohammed Shami and then to his replacement Bhuvneshwar Kumar — and a missed flight (Bumrah was supposed to go to Adelaide but ended up going to Sydney instead) for Bumrah to make his international debut. He made full use of the fortunate twist of fate by impressing with his pace, control, and ability to bowl yorkers. He took 2 for 40 on ODI debut and 3 for 23 on T20I debut to announce himself on the biggest stage. He was rewarded by being picked India's squads for Asia Cup T20 2016 and ICC World T20 2016.
