The boy from Tamworth city in New South Wales rose through the ranks quickly. In the 2010 Under-19 World Cup, Hazlewood took 4 for 30 against Pakistan to help Australia clinch the title. Hazlewood was soon fast-tracked to make his ODI debut against England at Southampton, and at the age of 19, he was one of the youngest to represent Australia, just like former pacer Craig McDermott.
Even though Hazelwood came close to a Test debut later that year during the tour to India, a stress injury in his back meant he had to wait for another four years to win the Baggy Green.
Hazlewood finally made his Test debut against India, on a hot and humid day at The Gabba, Brisbane in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2013-14. Like the others, Hazlewood too struggled in the extreme heat, but recovered well to claim a five-wicket haul. In late 2014, a five-wicket haul against South Africa proved to be a catalyst, as the right-arm pacer was named in Australia’s squad for the ICC World Cup 2015.
With a simple action, Hazelwood invokes memories of McDermott, but in a short career, he has managed to matches the feats of the great Glenn McGrath. In fact, a comparison between the two bowlers who also share the trait of bowling relentless line and lengths and troubling the batsmen outside off, shows they shared almost identical numbers 26 Tests in their respective careers.
Hazlewood emerged as one of the strongest characters in the Australian dressing room after a string of retirements post the 2015 World Cup win, but had to swallow the bitter pill of a defeat in the Ashes a few months later. In fact, the only time Hazlewood was dropped from the Test side was in the Ashes 2015, as his performances dipped after pushing himself too hard.
However, he returned with 13 wickets in three Tests in the home series against New Zealand, which included the figures of 9 for 136 at the Adelaide Oval. At home, he only grew in stature, claiming 17 wickets in a three-Test series against South Africa that Australia lost, and followed up with 15 wickets versus Pakistan, with an economy of a mere 1.99 in three Tests.
Hazlewood featured in all four Tests in India in early 2017, but barring his career-best 6 for 67 at Bengaluru, he failed to make a strong mark.
