Khurram Khan first made a name when he scored 243 runs and claimed 19 wickets in the ICC Trophy 2001, but could not take UAE to the World Cup. With UAE far from making it to the highest level, his career seemed to be leading nowhere, especially as age seemed to run out for him.
He got a taste of international cricket in the Asia Cup 2004 and then again in 2008. He shocked Sri Lanka with figures of four for 39 in only his second ODI. Bowling out Sri Lanka was a major achievement for UAE, and Khurram was named Man of the Match despite a huge defeat. Four years later he scored 78 and claimed two wickets against Bangladesh.
Khurram led UAE to their second World Cup appearance (and their first in 19 years) in 2015; just before the tournament he scored 53, 132 not out, and 85 not out in consecutive innings against Afghanistan. In the process he became the third-oldest ODI captain, and, in the second match, the oldest captain to score an ODI hundred. Just before the World Cup, however, Multan-born Khurram was replaced as UAE captain by the Dubai-born Mohammad Tauqir.
