Few people who have reached the number one ranking in ICC ratings (and have remained in the top five over a significant period of time) and have gone as unnoticed and remained as unassuming as Kyle Mills. He is one of those silent contributors whom no one seems to notice, but they carry out the roles assigned to them to perfection.
Mills has led a career strewn with injuries (and disciplinary actions), but has still managed to become the highest ODI wicket-taker among New Zealand seamers, that too at an exceptional average and strike rate. The current crop of promising youngsters have threatened to keep him out of contention, but Mills had managed to keep coming back.
Strong, accurate, and gifted with the ability to move the ball off a length, Mills had broken into the New Zealand line-up in the ARY Gold Cup of 2001. He won a Man of the Match award in his second ODI, and never looked back.
With Shane Bond down with consistent injuries, Mills took up the role as the New Zealand ODI spearhead. He took off from Champions Trophy 2006, where he finished with ten wickets at 17 and an economy rate of 4.14.
He kept on fighting his way through injuries, claiming a permanent place in the top five and eventually making it to the top slot in ICC rankings after the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy of 2007-08. Thereafter he underwent a string of surgeries, but came back as good as ever and went on to lead New Zealand in ODIs and T20Is in the absence of Brendon McCullum.
