ICC World T20 2016, Sri Lanka overview: Difficult transition hurting the team
Lahiru Thirimanne gets married
When Lahiru Thirimanne came through the ranks, there was genuine hope that the left-handed batsman could become a pillar of strength in Sri Lanka’s batting line-up. Despite not having a great record to back him up at the Under 19 and First-Class level, Thirimanne went on to make his Test debut against England at Southampton in 2011. By then, he had already made his ODI debut against India at Dhaka in 2010.
Thirimanne initially struggled to make his mark at the highest level, before amassing a Test hundred against Bangladesh at Galle. In ODIs, he was in prime form during the Asia Cup 2014, scoring a ton in the final against Pakistan.
It was his enterprising hundred that helped Sri Lanka win the tournament. It turned out to be a great tournament for him. He also compiled a century against Pakistan at Fatullah. Thirimanne plays more of an anchor role in a team made up of stroke-makers.
