Len Baichan Biography

Len Baichan had the misfortune of his career having an overlap with Gordon Greenidge and his two illustrious partners, Roy Fredericks and Desmond Haynes. His grit and concentration should definitely have amounted to more than 3 Tests otherwise.

It was not that he did poorly. He scored a hundred on Test debut, and his 184 runs came at a formidable average of 46. At First-Class level his 4,504 runs came at 51. Indeed, it was a case of being born at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Baichan broke through to the West Indies team for their 1974-75 tour of the subcontinent after averaging in excess of 40 in four consecutive seasons. He started brilliantly, with 158 and 114 in his first two tour matches in India, outscoring Greenidge — the other uncapped opener — comfortably.

Unfortunately, he met with a car accident, which kept him out of the first Test at Bangalore. Greenidge played, scored 93 and 107 on debut, and Baichan did not get a Test in that series. He made his debut in Pakistan on the second leg of the tour: West Indies were set 359 in just over a day, Baichan batted through with an unbeaten 105 on debut. He scored 36 at Karachi too.

Selected for the Australia tour of 1975-76, Baichan never got going. He played in the Melbourne Test without doing much, and that was it for him.

He continued to play Shell Shield, and scored an excellent fourth-innings 115 against the touring Pakistanis of 1976-77.

He later settled down in USA but keeps visiting Berbice to coach youngsters. He was inducted into the Berbice Hall of Fame in 2012.

On a side note, he was born Ganesh Baichan Dhanraj; his name was later anglicised to Leonard Baichan.
