An attacking opening batsman obviously influenced by Virender Sehwag, Mayank Agarwal made waves in junior cricket in Bangalore playing for the prestigious Bishop Cotton Boy's School. He carried his form later in life as well, doing wonderfully in the 2008-09 Cooch Behar Trophy.
Agarwal made it to India’s squad for Under-19 World Cup 2010, where he was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise disappointing campaign. He was India’s leading run-scorer in the tournament.
Agarwal was picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2011. He offered a glimpse of his talent when he scored a 31-ball 41 against a Mumbai Indians bowling attack that included Harbhajan Singh, Lasith Malinga, and Munaf Patel in the second qualifier. Mayank was with RCB till 2013 with varying levels of success — he once hit a six off the last ball to win a match — before switching to Delhi Daredevils.
Consistency has always been Mayank's foe, but 2013-14 saw him average 42.67 in List A cricket. The average rose to 60.77 in 2014-15 and to a humungous 81.80 in 2015. The First-Class debut came in 2013-14, where he performed moderately well. The following season was a disappointment, but he scored his maiden First-Class century in 2015-16, by which point he established himself as another one of Karnataka's incredibly talented young batsmen.
