When Milkha Singh followed his brother Kripal into the Indian Test side, it was compensation of sorts for their father Ram Singh, who was left out of India’s 1936 tour of England on BCCI’s (and Vizzy’s) ‘quota’ policy.
An elegant left-handed strokeplayer, Milkha never reached the heights Kripal did in domestic cricket. His 4,324 First-Class runs came at an ordinary 35. This included 92 runs at a mere 15 from 4 Tests with a highest of 35.
He etched his name into record books in 1961-62 when he scored a career-best of 151 against North Zone. It was the first-ever Duleep Trophy match, and Milkha’s century was the first in the history of the tournament.
Milkha’s finest outing came on the India Starlets tour of Pakistan in 1959-60. He ran into an incredible streak, with 103*, 97*, 101, and 100* in consecutive innings (in other words, one dismissal for 401 runs). He was named an Indian Cricket Cricketer of the Year.
Milkha later worked for State Bank of India. His younger brother Satwender also played First-Class cricket.
