2010 spot-fixing scandal
A smooth, whippy action utilised to deliver a ball with pace and late swing made Mohammad Aamer a fast-bowler who could scythe through the opposition before they could realise what had hit them. The cricket fraternity marvelled at the exhibition of such quality fast bowling from a teenager: within a year left-armer Aamer had developed into an all-round champion across formats.
Unfortunately, soon after delivering his career-best spells against England and Australia in the summer of 2010 — his second year of international cricket — and becoming the youngest in the world to claim 50 Test wickets, he was embroiled in a spot-fixing scandal.
He was named Man of the Series for his 30 wickets from six Tests that season, but this turned out to be ironical, for the Lord’s Test (where he took 6 for 84) was when it was learnt via a tabloid sting that he had accepted to bowl no-balls according to a pre-decided script on the instructions of his captain Salman Butt.
Aamer was the youngest of the three (Butt and Mohammad Asif were the other two) to get implicated in the crime and served six months in jail following an investigation in Britain. ICC banned him for five years from all cricket. Wisden had shortlisted him as Cricketer of the Year, but eventually removed him, eventually naming only four instead of the usual five.
Fortunately, common sense prevailed: Aamer divulged crucial details of the murky world of fixing and cooperated with the officials, and was allowed to return to domestic cricket under the auspices of PCB before schedule after the ICC revised its anti-corruption code.
He returned to international cricket in 2015-16, and bowled a sensational spell in the Asia Cup match against India. Defending only 84, Aamer took 3 wickets with his first 10 balls in an outstanding display of fast bowling. And later that summer, though he did not do anything spectacular, he was part of an amazing win at Lord's — the ground where he had lost it all five years earlier.
He has remained a regular feature of the Pakistan side since then, taking wickets consistently but rarely running through sides the way he used to.He did take 4 for 97 against Australia at Brisbane in 2016-17, but the outstanding performance came against West Indies at Kingston the following summer, when he strangled the West Indians into submission with 6 for 44 from 26 overs: it was his first five-wicket haul since his comeback.
