Mohammad Sami came at a time when Pakistan still had the likes of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and of course Shoaib Akhtar. With a free flowing action and good pace, Sami seemed a natural successor to the Pakistan greats and was touted to lead the bowling attack with Akhtar once the others retired. There was quite a bit of promise early on, but Sami then joined the list of fast-bowlers who fell by the wayside.
Sami has been in and out of the side and has made sporadic appearances for Pakistan in the last few years. In Test cricket, he averages of 50 and that shows that he has struggled to be amongst the wickets. However, in comparison, he has been better in one-day cricket, where he has managed to take a hat-trick against West Indies in 2002 and his best figures in the format read five for 10, against New Zealand in 2003.
In Test cricket, he has taken only two five-fors and has a hat-trick against Sri Lanka (thus becoming the second player after Wasim Akram to take hat-tricks in both formats) when he cleaned up the tail in 2002. Over the years, Sami struggled to replicate those feats and last played for Pakistan on the tour to Sri Lanka in 2012. He did play the ICC World T20 2012.
