Heading into ICC World Cup 2015, 43-year-old Mohammad Tauqir was named captain of UAE. Dubai-born Tauqir took over from Khurram Khan, and his appointment had more to do about promoting cricket among the local Emirati population. In a country where the expatriates have taken forward their passion for cricket, Tauqir is one of those few Emiratis who have taken to the game.
Tauqir is an off-spinner who is competent with the bat. He started his career back in 1996, and regularly featured for them in various tournaments including the ICC Trophy. He scored 55 on ODI debut against India in Asia Cup 2004 and snaring VVS Laxman. Later that year he registered his best bowling figures (6 for 17) against Malaysia in the Intercontinental Cup. He took 11 for 51 in the match. He also featured in Asia Cup 2008.
Though he was not a part of the UAE squad for two years since 2012, he made a comeback during their preparatory tour Down Under in 2014. He finished the tournament with a very good economy rate of 5.26.
