A solid middle-order batsman for Afghanistan, Mangal is a batsman in the classical mould who has provided the much-needed solidity to the Afghan middle-order. He is also a more than handy off-spinner.
Mangal had led the team during its early years and gained the ODI status during the 2009 World Cup Qualifiers. Like several of his teammates, Mangal had picked up cricket staying in the refugee camps during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. He was coached by former Afghan leg-spinner Taj Maliq who had to convince Mangal's family to allow him to pursue cricket.
Mangal was the captain when Afghanistan won their first ODI against Scotland in 2009. In 2010, he scored his maiden First-Class ton against Kenya scoring 168. Mangal's best performance came against the same opposition in March 2013 when he hit an unbeaten 112 to help his team to a seven-wicket win in an ODI. In the same year, Mangal's overall form saw him lose the captaincy to Mohammad Nabi.
He is a defensive player and has helped to insert some solidity in the middle-order.
