It was at The Rose Bowl in the summer of 2014 that a tall and strong Pankaj Singh replaced a tall and injured Ishant Sharma. To receive a Test cap from MS Dhoni, one of the most successful Indian captains, and that too in England, it was a fairytale beginning for a 29-year old Pankaj. It was the third match of the 5- Test series, with India leading 1-0. The stage was set all for the nervous debutant. All he had to do was apply himselfsensibly.
With a scrambled seam, he produced lateral movement, shaping the ball both ways. Time and again, he made the English openers dance to his tune. A wicket was on the cards, it seemed. However, fortune didn’t smile upon him.
As luck may have it, he went wicketless despite displaying a spirited effort. He had to painfully wait for one more Test to unleash the celebration. After 26 spells, comprising 69 overs, he scalped his maiden wicket, bringing the spectators — English, Indians or of any origin — to their feet. He added one more wicket to his tally, and his figures read 75-17-292-2 in the only two Tests he played. With India losing both Tests and Ishant fit and fine, dropping Pankaj didn’t come as a surprise.
Such was Pankaj’s short stint at the international level, with no beginner’s luck whatsoever.
From the U-19 level to the India A side, Pankaj’s cricketing journey is rated highly in Indian domestic circuit. But he rose to prominence when he pocketed 21 wickets at 20.95, guiding Rajasthan to the final of the Ranji Plate league in 2006.
Nonetheless, he has been one of the staggering performers in the Ranji Trophy, with his prodigious hunger to take wickets, and played major part in Rajasthan’s title triumphs in 2010 and 2011.
After a series of consistent performances, he donned India’s ODI jersey against Zimbabwe in 2010, a series in which senior players were rested. But with the likes of Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, S Sreesanth, Munaf Patel in the ranks, Pankaj’s ODI career was limited to only a match.
Pankaj played for Rajasthan Royals in IPL before moving to Royal Challengers Bangalore since the second season.
