When he made his Test debut, Paras Mhambrey was the third seamer alongside Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad in helpful conditions of Edgbaston. He got an early wicket of Michael Atherton as well. Yet, in an innings of 90 overs, he bowled just 10, the fourth bowler Anil Kumble bowling 24. He did not get a bowl in the second innings. But he did prove a dogged batsman in both innings, scoring 28 and 15 from No. 10, the second- and third-highest scores of two disastrous outings.
The second Test was slightly better, with 19 overs in an innings comprising of 130. In the second innings he was the fifth bowler used, after Srinath, Prasad, Kumble and Sourav Ganguly.
Mhambrey had travelled to England cruising on plenty of wickets in domestic seasons, but did not enjoy the faith of his captain Mohammad Azharuddin. While there were a gamut of new generation of Indian cricketers who emerged from that tour, the man from Mumbai faded away.
However, he was a fantastic contributor in domestic cricket and finished with 284 wickets at 24.36. He was good enough to trouble visiting teams, enjoying 4-wicket hauls against the New Zealanders of 1995 and the Australians of 2001. His victims included Stephen Fleming, Roger Twose, Chris Cairns and Michael Slater, Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist. He was also a good enough batsman to score a First-Class hundred. He also captained Mumbai to the Ranji Trophy title in 2002-03, capturing 25 wickets at 23.60, and announced his retirement following the triumph.
Later Mhambrey became a successful coach of Bengal, Baroda, India A and Mumbai Indians.
