When Pravin Amre walked out to bat at Durban in his first Test, on a fast wicket against Alan Donald, Meyrick Pringle, Brett Schulz and Brian McMillan, the score read 38 for 4. India recovered to 125 for 4 and then slumped to 146 for 7. Amre batted through all that with pluck and panache, losing his wicket finally after cracking 103, having taken India to 247 for 8. Match referee Clive Lloyd remarked that he was in the long line of great Indian batsmen that included Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Viswanath.
He had also scored a match-winning 55 on his ODI debut against a rampaging Donald at Calcutta. And on that South African tour that witnessed his debut, he had scored a magnificent 84 not out at East London to take India to a rare ODI victory in that country.
And then he became a victim of curious and illogical selection.
Most of the 7 Tests after his return from South Africa saw him walk in after the top-order had piled on enormous amounts of runs, and he was required to throw his bat around for some quick scores. He still managed 256 runs in these matches at 51.20 with 3 fifties. Yet, somehow he was dropped after just nine months at the international level.
His career ended with 425 runs at 42.50 from 11 Tests. He was never given another chance. In other words, he was not even given the opportunity to fail and provide an excuse for axing.
Amre remains yet another of the many mysterious what-might-have-been tales of Indian cricket.
A product of the Sahrdashram Vidyamandir that also produced Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli, Amre migrated from Bombay to Railways before settling in Rajasthan. In between he also played a season for Bengal.
When he was selected to tour South Africa, his total collection of runs in First-Class cricket was 2,095 at 83.80.
Later, with the Indian selectors having discarded him, he also turned out for Boland in the South African domestic season.
After calling it a day, Amre became a successful coach. He was in charge of the Indian Under-19 team which won the 2012 World Cup in Australia. He also coached the Mumbai cricket team and later served as the assistant coach of Pune Warriors and Delhi Daredevils in IPL.
