Decades before he became one of the most-respected ICC match referees, Ranjan Madugalle used to enthral spectators with his stylish strokeplay. Unfortunately, despite being a sight for sore eyes with the willow in hand, Madugalle rarely converted them to big scores: his 1,029 runs came at under 30 (though he averaged almost 43 at home), and involved a solitary hundred.
Nevertheless, he was a stalwart in the early days of Sri Lankan cricket. He was the only one to be a part of every single one of the first 18 Tests Sri Lanka played.
He came out at 29 for 3 in Sri Lanka’s first ever Test and top-scored with 65. In New Zealand in 1983-84 he got 242 runs at 60.50. He scored 103 against India in 1985, and got 54 the only time he batted at P Sara Oval in that same series — when Sri Lanka registered their first ever win.
He led Sri Lanka twice, in the last 2 Tests of his career — at Perth and Lord’s. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka were thoroughly outplayed in both Tests.
His ODI average was under 20, but he led Sri Lanka to wins against New Zealand and Pakistan. He was also a part of the side that upset India in the 1979 World Cup.
His tenure as an ICC match referee began in 1993-94. He holds the records for officiating in most matches. In fact, in Test cricket he has been match referee in twice as many matches as anyone else.
