Among the three spinners whose lack of success accelerated Clive Lloyd’s strategy of world domination through pace, Jumadeen was the most successful.
A decent enough slow left-arm spinner, he, along with debutants Albert Padmore and Imtiaz Ali, were given the task of bowling India out and more than 400 runs within which to do it. In the end, India triumphed by 6 wickets and Lloyd resolved never again to bank on spin.
But Jumadeen did not really do badly. The most experienced of the trio, he bowled 41 overs and ended with 2 for 70. However, that was far from enough.
Helped by the defection of major players in favour of the Packer Circus, Jumadeen did claw his way back to the West Indian side, playing a handful of Tests. He remained a difficult bowler to score runs off, and 4 for 72 against Australia at Kingston was just reward for his toil. Even in his last Test, as India hit 644 for 7 at Kanpur, he remained steady with 3 for 137. But he was never more than an economic stock bowler.
After his playing days, Jumadeen went on to became a selector.
