England XI vs Hyderabad XI practice match (Oct 8, 2011)
England vs New Zealand, 1st T20, The Oval
Ireland vs England, one-off ODI, Dublin
Ravi Bopara is perhaps one of the most talented all-rounders in world cricket, but sadly does not live up his potential. Although a regular in England's limited-overs set-up, he is yet to establish himself in the Test arena. Born in Forest Gate, London, Bopara had a disastrous start to his Test career; after scores of eight and 34 in his first two innings, he made three back-to-back ducks before redeeming himself with three centuries in as many innings against West indies at home.
After his ODI debut in 2007 against Australia, Bopara had to wait six years to get his maiden ODI ton, which he did against Ireland in 2013. Bopara has made vital contributions in the middle-order, and also while opening, but the lack of big scores has hurt him and England a lot. Bopara also has a decent economy rate with his steady medium-pacers.
Although Bopara did not bowl in the first 11 innings since his T20I debut against New Zealand, he has the best bowling figures in T20Is for England. He achieved this when he finished with figures of four for 10 against West Indies at The Oval. Bopara’s all-round abilities can never be underestimated as he pops up with game-changing performances when one least expects it. For now he remains a talent unfulfilled at the highest level, but England will hope he can come good eventually.
