RP Singh Biography

There was a time when Rudra Pratap Singh was the leader of India’s pace attack. A left-arm pacer capable of swinging the ball into the right-hander, RP had pace and bounce as his secondary weapons. RP first made headlines in the Under-19 World Cup in 2004, where he was India’s standout bowler. He made his ODI debut 2005, and Test debut the following year, but he did not have an extended run early on. He bowled wonderfully at Lord’s and The Oval in India’s 2007 tour of England, which offered a preview of things to come.

It was in India’s victorious ICC World T20 2007 campaign that RP truly established himself as India’s main seamer. RP was undoubtedly one of the architects of India’s success in the tournament, ending as joint second-highest wicket-taker with 12 wickets in 7 matches at 12.67 apiece and an economy rate of 6.33. He played a major role in India’s historic victory against Australia in the Perth Test in 2008 where he scored a crucial 30 in the second innings and took 6 wickets in the match.

Sadly, RP never took another wicket despite playing 4 more Tests, the last of which was a surprise but ultimately ill-fated recall at The Oval in 2011, where his first ball was miles outside leg-stump at a fraction of his old pace. A close friend of MS Dhoni, RP had been vacationing in USA when he received what ended up being a brief international recall.

RP started his domestic career at Uttar Pradesh but in later years migrated to Gujarat, where he did well in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. RP has also been an IPL traveller, starting off with Deccan Chargers — for whom he won the Purple Cap in 2009 — but going on to play for Mumbai Indians, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Rising Pune Supergiants.
