Sam Robson Biography

Born in Australia, Robson rose through the ranks in the New South Wales set-up playing U-17 and U-19 for them. His father James played for Worcestershire second XI and his brother Angus plays for Leicestershire.

Robson tried to explore new avenues when he made a tough call to move to England in 2008 and started off with the Middlesex second XI. He has also represented Australia U-19s. He played the Pro40 League and went on to make his First-Class debut for Middlesex in 2009.

Robson had a fruitful county season in 2011 averaging over 50. It was the 2013 season which made the difference as he emerged the leading run-scorer and England stumbled and struggled on their tour Down Under which saw a few players taking the flak.

In the absence of the old guard of Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen and the young top-order misfiring, Robson was picked for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka. He went on to make his Test debut against them at Lord’s in 2014.

It took just one Test for the youngster to stamp his authority as he struck a confident 127 at Headingley in only his second game. He isn’t a delightful watch with flashy strokes but with a strong defence and good temperament, Robson is an endorsement for young players to pursue long form of the game.
