West Indies have groped in the dark for a fast bowler of quality since the retirements of Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh. The emergence of left-arm pacer Sheldon Cottrell came as a whiff of fresh air in an unusual era, dominated by spin, for West Indies cricket.
Cottrell is a Jamaican defence force soldier. In fact, he was among the army workforce manning the pitch during the fifth ODI against India at Sabina Park in 2011. He made his First-Class debut for Jamaica the same year. More than the number of wickets to his credit, it was his ability to clock 150 kmph that caused a stir, leaving an imprint on those who watched him bowl. Other than his searing pace, his peculiar manner of celebrating a wicket is also a sight to behold.
He had not completed his education as a fast bowler when he was prematurely inducted into the Test side on a hastily arranged tour of India in 2013-14. He was dropped promptly after barely creating a ripple.
He returned to the rigours of First-Class cricket following his expulsion, and his returns in a handful of T20Is have been unflattering to say the least. But he remains a unique talent who is still learning his art, and despite not playing a single ODI, he was picked for World Cup 2015.
