Originally an off-spinner in the Saqlain Mushtaq model, Shoaib Malik rose up the batting order as time went on. His bowling action was questioned before it was cleared, but that did not have any impact on his batting, especially in limited-overs cricket, where he went from strength to strength in the 2000s.
More intelligent than spectacular, Malik’s batting has revolved around deft placements and nudges for singles as he waited for the end-overs to explode. He has batted at all positions from 1 to 10 in ODIs, and was one of Pakistan’s more prolific performers of the new millennium, becoming the second cricketers to score a fifty and take 3 wickets eight times in his career.
While he never scaled the same lofty heights in whites, he nevertheless had his moments under the sun. Challenged to bat for over four sessions against Muttiah Muralitharan at SSC in 2005-06, Malik opened batting and finished on an unbeaten 148. And at the same ground four years later he took on Rangana Herath, this time for a brisk 240-ball 134.
In 2015-16 he amassed a career-best 245 against England at Abu Dhabi, announced he would retire after the series, and claimed 2 for 97 and 2 for 25. Then he went on to take 4 for 33 and 3 for 26 in the last Test of his career.
As if almost on cue, his limited-overs career took off. In 2015 his 607 ODI runs came at 67.44, while he backed his 219 T20I runs with 7 wickets at 15.28. In 2016 he averaged almost 53 in T20Is, and his spectacular run in both formats seem to continue in 2017.
While his career ODI average hovers around the 35-mark, it shoots up to over 49 against India. This included a run of 75, 65, 41, 90, 95, and 105 in the mid-2000s and consecutive hundreds towards the end of the decade.
His most spectacular performance, however, came against South Africa in 2003-04, when he tonked an unbeaten 82 in 41 balls. This included a 7-ball stretch when he smashed 38 runs.
His off-breaks did not always result in wickets, but economy rates below 5 in ODIs and 7 in T20Is make impressive reading.
Malik was also appointed captain of Pakistan when Inzamam-ul-Haq stood down in 2007. He led
Pakistan to the final of the inaugural edition of World T20.
He married Indian tennis star Sania Mirza in 2010, which made him a relative by marriage to Ghulam Ahmed and Asif Iqbal, making it three Test captains in the family. Malik’s brother Adeel also played First-Class cricket.
