IPL 2019, Qualifier 2 Preview: Delhi Capitals square off against Chennai Super Kings for a place in maiden final
Tipped to be the next big thing in Indian cricket, Shreyas Iyer has all it takes to be a success at all levels. He came into the limelight when he scored a blistering 67-ball 109 against Australia Under-19 at
Visakhapatnam. He was included in the Under-19 World Cup after that. He got only three matches, in which he managed two fifties. He played for Clifton University soon after the tournament, where he scored a ton and picked up 20 wickets with his off and leg-spinners.
Drafted into the Mumbai side after a string of poor performances by his seniors, Shreyas made his debut against Jammu & Kashmir. He scored a fifty in his third match against Uttar Pradesh and his maiden ton in the next match against Bengal. He was responsible for turning Mumbai’s luck around following a poor start. They were eventually knocked out in the semi-final by eventual champions Karnataka. He finished as his team’s top-scorer with 809 runs at 50.56.
Picked to play for India A under the guidance of Rahul Dravid, he has shown potential. One of many protégés of Pravin Amre since his school days, Shreyas refers to Amre as a doctor who can diagnose any problems. Shreyas was bought by Delhi Daredevils for a whopping 2.6 crores, making him the highest paid uncapped player of IPL 2015. He lived up to the price tag, scoring 439 runs in 14 matches, and was Delhi’s highest run-getter, outdoing Yuvraj Singh and JP Duminy. As a result he was named Emerging Player of the Year.
