Banerjee was assembled in MRF Pace Foundation, and when he took 7 for 18 and 5 for 58 for Bihar to destroy Tripura in early 1990, plenty of fast bowling hopes did surface.
He was taken to Australia in 1991-92, the hard bouncy wickets being incitement for the selectors. He played only one Test, curiously on the traditionally turning Sydney track, when he was chosen as the fourth pace bowler at the expense of regular spinner Venkatapathy Raju. Bowling as first change ahead of Javagal Srinath, he accounted for Geoff Marsh, Mark Taylor and Mark Waugh in an impressive 3 for 47. However, with India desperately tried to bowl the Australians out in the second innings on a wicket taking spin, the bowler with the best figures in the first innings was not given the ball. That was the extent of his Test career, 3 wickets for 47 runs at 15.67.
His ODI debut was as successful, with 3 for 30 on a furiously fast Perth track where India tied with West Indies after scoring 126. He did not get a lot of wickets in the remaining matches of the Benson & Hedges Series and the World Cup immediately after that, but his batting low down the order demonstrated plenty of pluck and a refreshing ability of stroking the ball freely. His unbeaten 25 off 16 balls against England took India to the verge of victory at Perth.
He was taken on the South African tour in 1992-93 as well, as one of the many fast bowlers. He opened the attack with Kapil Dev against Combined Bowl XI and captured 3 for 41 and 5 for 29 as the Indians won a rare First-Class match on the tour. (Kapil’s figures were 1 for 29 and 1 for 16). However, he was not included in any of the Tests, was given 3 overs in an ODI, and that was the end of his international exposure. His South African tour ended with 9 wickets at 14.55 in the First-Class matches.
Banerjee continued in the domestic circuit, enjoying a great all-round season in 1993-94, including a devastating 6 for 48 for East Zone against West Zone in a triumphant Duleep Trophy encounter. But he never quite made it to the fringes of the Indian team again.
He later became a coach, tutoring Umesh Yadav, and of late, a certain Arjun Tendulkar.

While Umesh has had to warm up the bench for most time since the last year, the situation has not affected him mentally.
Arjun has represented the country in two U-19 'Tests' against Sri Lanka last year, where he got three wickets.
Umesh’s imperious showing at Hyderabad has created a pleasant headache for the Indian team management.
Venkatram had been the coach of Tripura before he moved to National Cricket Academy in 2011.
Tendulkar also felt Anil Kumble had a great handwriting.
Former India bowler Subroto Banerjee has been named coach of the Jharkhand Ranji team.
