Teddy Wynyard was a versatile sportsman and would have been counted as one of the best batsmen of England in the final two decades of the 1800s had the demands of Army life and the less than First-Class status of Hampshire matches not robbed him of nearly 10 years of his cricket career.
In First-Class cricket, he scored 8,318 runs in 154 matches at 33. Given he played most of his cricket in the 1890s, it compares favourably with the greatest of his era. WG Grace strode ahead of the rest with 39, Arthur Shrewsbury managed 37, Bobby Abel 35 and William Gunn 33. Had Hampshire matches between 1887 and 1894 been deemed First-Class, he would have totalled 1,848 more runs in 34 more matches at exactly the same average of 33.
He could also keep wickets, and did so with regularity for Hampshire. When in the mood, he could also bowl lobs and obtained 66 First-Class wickets, including a best of 6 for 63 against Leicestershire.
Additionally, he was a superb captain, if somewhat of a martinet.
One of the first batsmen to hit inside out, Wynyard combined dour defence with remarkable improvisations. He could play a stunning pull-drive to pitched-up deliveries on the off-side by going down on his right knee, and also experimented with early varieties of reverse-sweep. But cricket was one of the many sports he played.
A dashing forward in football, Wynyard scored the first goal of the FA Cup final of 1881.After his Army career had brought an end to his top-level football, he still played twice for the Corinthians in 1893, scoring five goals for them. Later he became the European Tobogganing champion in 1894. He also played hockey at county level and formed his own golf club.
Army duties kept him away from cricket for great periods of his career, but a magnificent season in 1896 propelled him into the Test side. But, in spite of some excellent seasons for Hampshire, he had to wait till his retirement from Army for his next couple of Tests. He refused to tour Australia under Drewy Stoddart in 1897, and then refused to captain the England side to Australia in 1907-98 because of advancing age. In between, after retiring from the Army in 1894, he played two Tests for England in 1905-06 in South Africa, at the age of 44.
A Carthusian, commissioned in 1883, Wynyard served in Burma from 1885 to 1887 and was mentioned in the dispatches twice before being awarded DSO in 1887. He was also awarded the Royal Humane Society’s bronze medalwhen he rescued a Swiss peasant from drowning at considerable personal risk.
Wynyard led the England team to New Zealand in 1906-07 and toured America and West Indies with various English teams. He remains one of the five select men to play Test cricket for England and gain an FA Cup winner’s medal; the other four being Jack Sharp, Harry Makepeace, Andy Ducat and Denis Compton.
