Tharanga Paranavitana had a disastrous first tour for Sri Lanka. In Pakistan in 2009, he scored a duck on his Test debut at Karachi and then was hurt during the horrific terrorist attacks on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore. However, the gritty southpaw then made an impression when Pakistan toured Sri Lanka later that year with a couple of good knocks in the first Test. After Malinda Warnapura and Michael Vandort were axed, Paranavitana was looked at as a stable option at the top.
Paranavitana is stable and gritty, not spectacular or flashy; his comforting presence at one end has helped Tillakaratne Dilshan take on the opening role with ease. Even as Dilshan dominated attacks, Paranavitana was stable and continued to score quietly. However, he made a huge impact during India’s tour to Sri Lanka in 2010 when he smashed back-to-back tons in the first two Tests.
An average in the 30s shows that he hasn’t been able to convert his starts. The small cameos were not good enough for the selectors, and by the end of 2012, he lost his place in the Test side.
