Wayne Daniel Biography

Wayne Daniel was the perfect example of being born in the wrong place at the wrong time. Put a 30-wicket cut-off, and he was ninth in the world during this phrase. Unfortunately, he was also fifth among West Indians.

The heavy-set, bullish Daniel ran in fast and bowled faster, and was at his lethal best when egged on properly — something his Middlesex captain Mike Brearley exploited to great success. Of his 867 First-Class wickets, 685 came for Middlesex (at 22.02). He played a crucial role in their glory days of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

He was equally prolific in limited-overs cricket, taking 362 wickets at 18.16 with an economy rate of 3.42. He took 11-5-12-7 against Minor Counties in 1978, then the second-best figures in List A cricket.

There was a reason Mike Smith called him Black Diamond.

He played 10 Tests and 18 ODIs for West Indies between 1976 and 1985. Daniel was a part of West Indies’ demolition of England in the famous ‘grovel’ series — after demolishing Indian wickets and bones at Sabina Park, that is. That series also won him a contract with Middlesex, whom he served for a decade.

To be fair, Daniel had little option. Let alone West Indies, he had to compete with Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner, Vanburn Holder, and Keith Boyce for Barbados — before Franklyn Stephenson and Ezra Moseley came along. To make things worse, Daniel could not bat at all — though when he connected one it usually landed outside the ground.

There were several instances of Daniel tearing loose if riled up. When Imran Khan tried to bounce him once, Daniel ran through Sussex with 6 for 15, subjecting Imran to special treatment.

When Jonathan Agnew bounced him, Daniel wrecked Leicestershire with 5 wickets in 4 overs — in addition to breaking James Whittaker’s arm and hitting Daniel Cobb on the helmet so hard that one of the screws soared over the bowler’s head. The next day’s newspaper carried a photograph of Daniel bowling Gordon Parsons: the frame did not have the batsman in it.

He earned a comeback for the national side for the India tour of 1983-84 when Andy Roberts was on the wane, Garner was injured and Colin Croft was banned. He bowled at terrific pace, pushing the Indians back on a flat pitch at Delhi, and took 5 for 39 in his next Test at Ahmedabad.

Immensely popular with women, Daniel often gave his best when Brearley promised to introduce him to “the attractive brunette in the tavern”. Teammate Simon Hughes mentioned having to take telephone calls in the Middlesex dressing-room from members of “Daniel’s harem”. His tremendous respect for Viv Richards was as much about Richards’ batting as it was about his female partner; and when Clive Lloyd hit one back past Daniel’s face, Daniel vowed that he would never approach Lloyd’s ‘crumpet’.

He took to radio commentary after retirement, and coached fast bowlers, most famously Tino Best. In sharp contrast to his terrifying attitude, Daniel loves soul music.
