Yajurvindra Singh Bilkha played just 4 Tests, but ended with two world records. While that is rare, even rarer is for an Indian cricketer to streak ahead of the rest of the world with his skills in the field.
Making his debut against England at Bangalore in 1976-77 following a phenomenal domestic season, Yajurvindra failed with the bat but held 5 catches in the first innings. He thus equalled the 41-year-old record set by Vic Richardson. In the second innings he snapped up two more catches to make it 7 for the match, equalling the world record of Richardson’s grandson, Greg Chappell. Of ground fielders, the record has been bettered by only Ajinkya Rahane.
However, as a batsman he did not really set the grounds on fire. His four Tests brought him just about a hundred runs at a sub-20 average with a highest of 43. He did have a more successful stint in domestic cricket, and though he averaged 42, 9 hundreds from 78 matches did not really allow him further chances at the highest level.
