COMMENTARY
New Zealand won by 167 runs | Sri Lanka Vs New Zealand 2nd Test match
More...
Yet another series has come and gone. Sri Lanka, long considered as unbeateable at home have just managed their second successive drawn series. They will now fly down under to face the marauding Aussies in 3 Tests starting on December 14th at Hobart. New Zealand will have a slightly longer break before travelling to South Africa for a full series. Test cricket is the flavour of the month though, join us as Australia clash with South Africa in Ricky Ponting's farewell Test at Perth tomorrow. For now, cheers and bye..
Mahela Jayawardene: Credit to the Kiwis, they stuck to their task. We tried to fight our way back, but it was tough. It would have been great to have a third Test. We played good cricket right through the series and are looking forward to the Australia series. Getting runs in the first innings is always important, they put up the score on the board and their new ball bowlers asked us many questions. We need to work on facing the new ball, we have lost too many wickets out there and ended up putting pressure on ourselves.
Herath: I am a bit tired, actually. It is good to take wickets for the team, I am happy with the way I am bowling. We need to study the surfaces in Australia. I am very confident about my abilities.
Rangana Herath is the Man of the Series for his 20 wickets.
Ross Taylor: It is always good to come overseas and win a match. The way we prepared for this Test after losing the first match at Galle was great. Boult and Southee have led the way for us. We were determined to put runs on the board. Kane Williamson helped me put up a good stand. We did well in the field and held to all the catches that were presented to us. We will go home and rest for a few days, we are looking forward to the series against South Africa.
Ross Taylor is the Man of the Match
On the other hand, the Lankans will be a worried lot. The openers have failed to fire unless presented with easy batting conditions. Sangakkara had a series to forget with the bat, Mahela Jayawardene flopped here while the pacers looked innocuous. The positive signs were the continued good show of Rangana Herath and the growing of stature of Angelo Mathews. They have very little time to be disconsolate, as a tougher Test beckons them in Australia.
Both teams now head to the southern hemisphere with different thoughts. The Kiwis will be buoyed at having broken the duck, with their last win coming exactly a year back at Hobart (not considering the win against Zimbabwe at Napier). They have a promising new ball bowling pair in Boult and Southee, while Williamson came good in the second Test. They have issues at the top of the order and in the spinning department, but the team seems to be taking shape ahead of tougher challenges.
The Kiwis take the stumps as souvenirs, they have deserved this win. They were definitely the better team in the park. The words of advice from their legendary batsman, Martin Crowe has served them very well indeed. They won a good toss and for a change made sure that they did not waste it as Williamson and Taylor slammed centuries. Trent Boult and Tim Southee have been outstanding right through the tour, they now had the runs behind them and showed that they can cause havoc reducing the hosts to 12/3. Thilan Samaraweera and Angelo Mathews fought hard and later Suraj Randiv chipped in as the fight continued. NZ managed a 168 run lead though, and powered by Taylor's fine 74, set a target of 363. The match was all but over when they reduced Sri Lanka to 47/4 at stumps yesterday and completed the formalities despite a rear guard knock of 84 by Mathews.

New Zealand win in Sri Lanka after 14 years, this is the 3rd consecutive loss for the hosts at the P Sara Oval. This is turning out to be a bogey ground for them.
