It seemed as if a stiff started at Punjab, but Miller powered them home with little fuss. Early in the evening, Mitch Marsh spanked sixes off the last two balls to deliver an unlikey, nerve-wracking win for Perth.
Miller: 'Akshar took a lot of pressure off my shoulders. I feel that I can always catch up at the end. I was lucky upfront with a few chances. I back myself to clear the ropes or hit the boundaries. It all comes down to the preparation. I am working hard on hitting the ball. At the end of the innings, it is mostly see-the-ball-hit-the-ball mentality. We have good spinners and pacers. Perera gives more strength to the team. As Bailey said, the boys bowled well.'
Miller is the MoM
Bailey: 'It is brilliant. The two guys in the middle were calm. It was another great game. We got off to a really good start, we were up or thereabouts with the run-rate. To hit 10 balls for 20 or something is extraordinary. Lots of luck (when asked about the secret of captaincy). It is a beautiful batting wicket. You can get a wicket off a bad ball, the good ball gets hit. That's the way it goes.'
Emrit: 'Yeah, we were looking at 175-180. We were pleased with it (174). Last 5 overs (when asked what went wrong). We did not keep it tight. I still feel we could have had it. Ravi (Rampaul) is our experienced bowler. He did not get it right today. These things happen.'
Akshar Patel has a glowing smile on his face as he hugs his captain. Bailey pumped his fist as soon as Miller laid into that one. Punjab were off to another indifferent start. Vohra's streaky innings was mostly about dropped chances. Viru wasn't at his best either, but gave the early impetus with his 25-ball 31. Thereafter, Jeevan Mendis sparked off a middle overs meltdown with a brilliant spell. Maxi misfired, but Miller came to the party tonight, smashing 46. Akshar's cameo too can't be undermined. The young turk manipulated the field efficiently, didn't he? Both Rampaul and Holder failed to fire in the yorkers, helping Punjab's cause.
19.4Jason Holder to David Miller. SIX, Punjab raze another 150-plus target. Two in two in the World T20 League for the hosts. Holder hunts for a yorker, misses it, dishes out a length ball outside off, Miller steps away and launches it over extra-cover for the winning blow
19.3Jason Holder to David Miller. no run, seeing Miller make room, Holder sprays this outside off, but this full toss is inside the tram-line
Punjab need just 3 runs from 4 balls.
19.2Jason Holder to Akshar Patel. 1 run, back of a length and on middle, Patel steps away, angles his bat and guides it to deep backward point
19.1Jason Holder to David Miller. 1 run, full toss, looked waist-high, Miller slices it over point. Billy says it's a legal delivery
Miller pumps his fist. The Punjab dug-out erupts.
End of over 19 ( 20 Runs )MOH 170/6 18.6Ravi Rampaul to Akshar Patel. SIX, banged in short and direct at chest-height, Patel does not flinch. He pulls it up and over the deep square leg boundary
18.5Ravi Rampaul to Akshar Patel. FOUR, where are the yorkers, Rampaul? Length ball close to off, Patel gets a controlled outside edge, the ball runs away towards third man, Munaweera dives in vain
18.4Ravi Rampaul to David Miller. 1 run, banged in short and on off, Miller pulls it away to wide long-on
18.3Ravi Rampaul to Akshar Patel. 1 run, dug in short on middle, hurries onto the batsman, who pulls it away to deep square leg. Accurate, bullet throw from the deep. Miller wanted a brace, but has to retreat
18.2Ravi Rampaul to Akshar Patel. FOUR, smart batting from Akshar. Pitched up and around off, Patel slices it over extra cover, after opening his bat face. The ball runs away to the boundary. The pressure is back on Rampaul
18.1Ravi Rampaul to Akshar Patel. FOUR, Patel takes a leaf out of Miller's book. Back of a length and outside off, Patel sits back and pulls it away to the cow corner fence
Ravi Rampaul [3.0-0-30-2] is back into the attack
End of over 18 ( 9 Runs )MOH 150/6 150 runs for MOH 17.6Jason Holder to David Miller. FOUR, shortish and on off, Miller stands tall and swings it over mid-wicket. The ball sped away to the boundary, it even made a cracking sound as Miller's blade met with it
