Sri Lanka innings

Batting R B 4s 6s SR
Lahiru Thirimannec Jonny Bairstow b Stuart Broad 4 22 0 0 18.18
6.3
Stuart Broad to Lahiru Thirimanne, OUT! CAUGHT! Gone.... the leg slip was there. England strike. It was straight to Jonny at leg slip there. The plan has worked for England. Fullish length delivery, angled into middle and leg, Lahiru closes the face of his bat to flick that one. He though finds Bairstow at leg slip. It went just a hint to the right of Jonny Bairstow, who lunges forward and takes that one.
Kusal Pererac Joe Root b Dom Bess 20 28 2 0 71.43
10.2
Dom Bess to Kusal Perera, OUT! CAUGHT! Oh.... what has he done? What has Kusal Perera done? Full length ball outside off, Perera tries to be unconventional. He looks to reverse sweep that one but gets it uppish and straight into the hands of Joe Root there, at slip.
Kusal Mendisc Jos Buttler b Stuart Broad 0 2 0 0 0
6.5
Stuart Broad to Kusal Mendis, OUT! TAKEN! Got him! That is the 4th duck in a row for Mendis. This is just a man without any sort of confidence whatsoever. This is good bowling from Stuart Broad. He bowls a legcutter, disguises it well, and bowls it outside off. Kusal Mendis hangs his bat outside the line, looking to defend. But it takes the outside edge and Jos does well to come forward and take the catch.
Angelo Mathewsc Joe Root b Stuart Broad 27 54 1 1 50
28.6
Stuart Broad to Angelo Mathews, OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Brilliant catch by Joe Root. Broad gets another one. A shortish ball outside off, Mathews looks to cut that one hard, but ends up edging it to the first slip. Root there reacts quickly and takes this catch to his right. Mathews goes after getting set. Sri Lanka 4 down now.
Dinesh Chandimal (C)c Sam Curran b Jack Leach 28 71 1 0 39.44
29.2
Jack Leach to Dinesh Chandimal, OUT! CAUGHT! Dinesh Chandimal....what have you done? Jack has his first wicket here. Venues might have changed but not Sri Lanka's fortunes here. Loopy and outside off, Dinesh comes on the front foot and looks to drive that one. He does so uppishly and finds Sam at cover. What a good catch it was though. Curran dives forward and pulls off a very good catch.
Niroshan Dickwella (W)c Dom Sibley b Dom Bess 12 21 1 0 57.14
38.1
Dom Bess to Niroshan Dickwella, OUT! TAKEN! Sri Lanka sliding further into trouble. Niroshan goes for 12. It was a poor ball actually. Short and wide outside off, Dickwella rocks back and looks to carve it over point. But would you believe it? He picks out Sibley at point to perfection, who tumbles behind and takes the catch. Oh my goodness!
Dasun Shanakac Jos Buttler b Dom Bess 23 48 3 0 47.92
42.3
Dom Bess to Dasun Shanaka, OUT! CAUGHT! How cruel can the Lankans' luck be. Dasun goes for 23. It did look a clean catch even though the umpires decided to have a look at that. Tossed up ball on the stumps, Shanaka gets down and looks to sweep. It hits the boot of Bairstow, at short leg, as the Englishman turned his back and looked to avoid making contact with the ball. After taking his boot, the ball lobs in the air and Jos Buttler runs forward and takes the catch. How much more unluckier can a batsman be?
Wanindu Hasarangab Dom Bess 19 22 2 0 86.36
46.1
Dom Bess to Wanindu Hasaranga, OUT! TIMBER! Bess gets his 2nd 5-wicket haul. First one was in Port Elizabeth. 2nd one here in Galle. Sri Lanka have now registered their lowest ever first innings total, here at Galle. Tossed up ball on middle and leg, Wanindu looks to reverse sweep that one but he misses. The ball goes onto hit the woodwork. SRI LANKA ARE BOWLED OUT FOR 135 IN THEIR FIRST INNINGS! AND, TEA HAS BEEN TAKEN ON DAY 1!
Dilruwan Pererab Dom Bess 0 2 0 0 0
42.5
Dom Bess to Dilruwan Perera, OUT! BOWLED! Off spinner gets the off spinner. Perera played all over it there. He goes for a duck. Sri Lanka sink further. Floats the offbreak around off, it pitches and turns in. Dilruwan Perera looked to drive that through the covers but misses. The stumps are shattered. Sri Lanka have thrown away every advantage that they have gained, by winning the toss earlier.
Lasith Embuldeniyarun out (Jack Leach) 0 1 0 0 0
43.5
Jack Leach to Wanindu Hasaranga, OUT! RUN OUT! What a way to get out. A floated ball on middle, Hasaranga comes down the track and hits the ball straight down towards the bowler. Leach gets a hand to this one and the ball hits the stumps at the non-striker's end. Embuldeniya there was backing up too far and is found short of his crease. The umpires send it upstairs to have a check whether Leach had got his hand there. The replays show the ball touched his hand and the batter was well short of his crease. Sri Lanka 9 down now.

Batting R B 4s 6s SR
Zak Crawleyc Wanindu Hasaranga b Lasith Embuldeniya 9 26 1 0 34.62
8.4
Lasith Embuldeniya to Zak Crawley, OUT! TAKEN! Lasith Embuldeniya has got 2 wickets here. And he is happy. But not Crawley. He goes for 9. Floated delivery on middle and off, Zak gives himself room on the off side and looked to go over mid off. The ball comes, clips his boot and then the shot is through from Zak. It goes high in the air, but Wanindu, who was at mid off, backtracks, and takes a good catch. Never easy those catches, the ones where a fielder has to move backward and take it. Hasaranga did well here.
Dom Sibleyc Lahiru Thirimanne b Lasith Embuldeniya 4 15 0 0 26.67
4.2
Lasith Embuldeniya to Dom Sibley, OUT! TAKEN! Good decision by the third umpire. Dom Sibley departs. England lose their first wicket, with 10 runs on the board. Floated around off and middle, it pitches and breaks away. Sibley prods forward and looks to work it on the leg side. To the naked eye though, he seems to have missed and the ball clipped his pads and went to first slip, who took it. Thirimanne was the man there. The Lankans go up in appeal, for a catch but the umpire is unmoved. They seem certain and review it. UltraEdge is in and confirms that there was a fine edge there. Sibley has to walk back here.
Jonny Bairstowc Kusal Mendis b Lasith Embuldeniya 47 93 2 0 50.54
42.2
Lasith Embuldeniya to Jonny Bairstow, OUT! CAUGHT! Early breakthrough for Sri Lanka. Brilliantly bowled from Embuldeniya. He tosses one up around off, draws Bairstow forward as he pushes at it. The ball takes the outside edge and is dying down on the close in fielder on the off side. He though manages to hold onto it. Jonny though is not going anywhere as he takes the review. Replays roll in and it as fair catch as the big screen shows out.
Joe Root (C)c Lasith Embuldeniya b Dilruwan Perera 228 321 18 1 71.03
117.1
Dilruwan Perera to Joe Root, OUT! CAUGHT! It has been a fantastic innings from Joe Root! Tossed up delivery on middle, Root comes down the track and lofts it over mid-wicket but does not get the timing on it. It goes towards the fielder where Lasith Embuldeniya takes a good catch in the deep. ENGLAND ARE ALL OUT FOR 421!
Dan Lawrencec Kusal Mendis b Dilruwan Perera 73 150 6 1 48.67
85.3
Dilruwan Perera to Dan Lawrence, OUT! CAUGHT! Finally Sri Lanka has something to cheer for! What an innings on debut from Dan Lawrence. The young man showed good cricketing skills and patience to take England stronger in the lead. Though he would be disappointed to not have got his maiden Test ton but well played in the end. Perera tossed one up around leg, Lawrence looks to fend it away awkwardly but the extra bit of bounce means that the ball catches the splice of the bat and lobs towards Kusal Mendis at short leg. Mendis this time does not make a mistake as he gets a hold of it.
Jos Buttler (W)c Niroshan Dickwella b Asitha Fernando 30 57 3 0 52.63
104.1
Asitha Fernando to Jos Buttler, OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! The ball change works for Sri Lanka. A fuller length ball around off, shapes away a little after pitching. Buttler looks to drive that one without any foot movement but gets an outside edge which is safely taken by the keeper to his right. Sri Lanka finally have something to cherish this morning.
Sam Curranb Asitha Fernando 0 1 0 0 0
104.2
Asitha Fernando to Sam Curran, OUT! Knocked him over. What a first ball to Sam Curran. A fullish ball around middle and off, Curran looks to play that one with a straight bat but gets beaten by the movement and hears the rattling sound of timber. Two wickets in two balls for Fernando. He will be on a hat-trick the next ball.
Dom Bessrun out (sub Minod Bhanuka / Niroshan Dickwella) 0 4 0 0 0
105.6
Lasith Embuldeniya to Joe Root, OUT! RUN OUT! Bess departs! Floated delivery on middle, Root looks to sweep but gets it off the pads. The bowler appeals for lbw but the umpire shakes his head. The ball goes towards fine leg. Root goes for the single but Bess is not interested but still goes for it. The subsitute fielder Minod Bhanuka throws the ball at the keeper's end where Dickwella takes the bails off. Replays show that Bess was nowhere near the crease. Ultra Edge later shows that it came off the glove.
Jack Leachlbw b Dilruwan Perera 4 20 1 0 20
111.2
Dilruwan Perera to Jack Leach, OUT! LBW! Three reds and Jack Leach has to walk back! Tossed up delivery on middle, Leach looks to defend but gets hit on the pads. The bowler appeals for lbw and the umpire raises his finger. Leach reviews it. Ultra Edge shows there is a flat line when the ball passes the bat. Ball Tracker shows that it is hitting the middle stump.
Mark Woodc Niroshan Dickwella b Dilruwan Perera 2 9 0 0 22.22
113.4
Dilruwan Perera to Mark Wood, OUT! CAUGHT! Dilruwan Perera gets his third wicket! Flighted delivery on middle, Wood looks to sweep but gets a top edge. It goes towards the leg side where the keeper calls for it and takes a simple catch. England are 9 down now and are leading by 271 runs. How many more can they add?

Kusal Pererac Jack Leach b Sam Curran 62 109 5 1 56.88
37.4
Sam Curran to Kusal Perera, OUT! CAUGHT! A gift for England. Perera has thrown his wicket yet again after a good start. A short ball wide outside off, Perera looks to slash it on the off side, but his hand comes off as he plays that shot and times this one straight into the hands of Jack Leach at deep point. A lucky breakthrough this for England here. Sri Lanka lose their 1st wicket.
Lahiru Thirimannec Jos Buttler b Sam Curran 111 251 12 0 44.22
82.1
Sam Curran to Lahiru Thirimanne, OUT! CAUGHT! The new ball does wonders for England and in that case any team. A brilliant innings from Lahiru Thirimanne comes to an end. He though has given hope to Sri Lanka of a fightback. Sam bowls a length ball around off, Thirimanne plays for the away delivery but the ball cuts into him and then takes the inside edge past the stumps and to the keeper. Buttler takes a fumbling catch to his right and celebrates.
Kusal Mendisc Jos Buttler b Jack Leach 15 65 1 0 23.08
59.5
Jack Leach to Kusal Mendis, OUT! CAUGHT! Leach gets his first wicket in this innings! Flighted delivery on off, Mendis looks to defend but gets an outside edge. It goes towards the keeper where Buttler takes a comfortable catch. It was the previous delivery that made him play at this one. England get an opening now.
Lasith Embuldeniyac Dom Sibley b Dom Bess 0 11 0 0 0
62.6
Dom Bess to Lasith Embuldeniya, OUT! CAUGHT! A wicket first up on Day 4 for England. Lasith Embuldeniya, the nightwatchman departs without troubling the scorers. Bess finally has a wicket to his name in this innings. It was a tossed up ball around off, a hint of spin there too. Embuldeniya tries to force it off the back foot and away from the body. The ball though takes the bottom half of the bat and goes uppishly towards short cover where Dom Sibley gobbles it up.
Angelo Mathewsc Joe Root b Jack Leach 71 219 4 0 32.42
136.5
Jack Leach to Angelo Mathews, OUT! CAUGHT! The last warrior for Sri Lanka falls! Root takes his 3rd catch of the innings. Leach bowls a floated ball on off, Mathews looks to punch it off the back foot towards covers but ends up getting an outside edge which is gobbled up by Root at first slip. 5 wickets for Jack Leach. SRI LANKA ARE BOWLED OUT FOR 359 RUNS! THE LEAD IS OF 73 RUNS!
Dinesh Chandimal (C)c Joe Root b Dom Bess 20 28 3 0 71.43
91.3
Dom Bess to Dinesh Chandimal, OUT! CAUGHT! Wicket straight after Lunch for England. Bess gets a natural variation from the surface. A tossed up ball outside off, Chandimal looks to defend but the ball just about spins away taking the outside edge and Root at first slip takes a fine catch diving to his right. Excellent ball from Bess. Sri Lanka still trail by 43 runs and now have 5 wickets in hand as their skipper departs for 20.
Niroshan Dickwella (W)c Jos Buttler b Dom Bess 29 74 1 0 39.19
115.1
Dom Bess to Niroshan Dickwella, OUT! CAUGHT! Dickwella departs! Bess strikes on the first ball of his new spell. England in joy after breaking this frustrating stand. Maybe a lapse in concentration from Dickwella led to his downfall. Bess bowls a floated ball around off and gets it to spin a bit away from the left-hander. Dickwella looks to cut it off the back foot but he ends up gettng a nick off the outside edge of his bat. Buttler behind the sticks there does well to hold onto it. Can England wrap this up quickly now?
Dasun Shanakab Jack Leach 4 5 0 0 80
116.2
Jack Leach to Dasun Shanaka, OUT! BOWLED! One brings two! Lovely bowling from Leach there. Bowls a very fuller one on around middle, Shanaka is opened up in his stance as he makes a desparate attempt to fend it away. He though fails to lay bat on ball as the ball sneaks through beneath his bat and goes onto rattle the wickets behind. Sri Lanka falling apart as Mathews is running out of partners.
Wanindu Hasarangac Joe Root b Jack Leach 12 18 2 0 66.67
122.2
Jack Leach to Wanindu Hasaranga, OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Root was asking his fielders to be ready for a catch on the previous ball. He takes one now. A tossed up ball outside off, Hasaranga looks to drive but gets an outside edge towards first slip. Root there dives to his left and takes a very good catch which was flying quick. Leach gets his 3rd wicket and Sri Lanka are 8 down now with a lead of 28.
Dilruwan Pererast Jos Buttler b Jack Leach 24 38 5 0 63.16
132.5
Jack Leach to Dilruwan Perera, OUT! STUMPED! Sharp work form Buttler. Tossed up around off, Perera lunges forward and looks to defend it but the ball turns square after pitching and Buttler behind the wickets collects it and whips the stumps sharply. The umpire takes it upstairs. The replays roll in and the third umpire after multiple replays decides that Perera does not have any thing behind the line. The line belongs to the umpire and Perera has to take the long walk back.

Lasith Embuldeniya to Zak Crawley, OUT! CAUGHT! Sri Lanka have sent both the openers once again quickly. Nicley tossed up by Embuldeniya, Crawley goes for the drive away from the body but the spin and turn on it means that the ball takes the outside edge and settles into the bucket hands of Kusal Mendis at short gully.
Dom Sibleyb Lasith Embuldeniya 2 5 0 0 40

Lasith Embuldeniya to Dom Sibley, OUT! BOWLED! Sri Lanka strike early. A tossed up ball around off, Sibley goes on the back foot and lets it go through thinking the ball might turn. But the ball doesn't turn and goes straight to hit the off stump. England lose a wicket in the first over.

Dilruwan Perera to Jonny Bairstow, OUT! RUN OUT! England panicking out there! They have lost their most reliable cricketer, the double centurion from the first innings departs for just 1 run. Tossed up ball on off, Bairstow taps it to the vacant point region and takes off for a single but stops in between. He again takes off for a single as Dickwella there runs to the ball, turns and throws at the bowler's end. Root who is running to the danger end has got his bat stuck out into the ground as he fails to make it in time when the bails are dislodged off a direct hit. The umpires just for confirmation take it upstairs and the replays confirm that Root was indeed short of his ground and the ball dislodged the bails and not the fielder standing close to the stumps.
