Lahiru Thirimannec Jos Buttler b James Anderson 43 95 5 0 45.26
26.2
James Anderson to Lahiru Thirimanne, OUT! Caught behind! What a delivery, what a class bowler James Anderson is! He has managed to get something out of this unresponsive track. The English seamer speeds in from 'round the wicket and dishes out a length ball just outside off. It lands and straightens slightly, Thirimanne could have left it but he feels for it and tries to play at it outside the line of the stumps. Gets a thick outside edge and Buttler makes no mistake. Third wicket for Jimmy and he is turning out to be a true replacement for Stuart Broad. The partnership is broken and it's a great start for England after Lunch.
Kusal Pererac Joe Root b James Anderson 6 14 1 0 42.86
4.1
James Anderson to Kusal Perera, OUT! Caught at first slip! Poor, poor shot by Kusal Perera. Anderson angles in a fuller length ball around off from 'round the wicket, Perera attempts to probably heave it over the leg side but gets a big fat edge behind. Joe Root jumps and completes the catch over his head. On a closer look at the replays, there wasn't enough movement but the seam of the delivery was pointing towards the slip cordon. So maybe, that made the ball to nip away a shade, very little. Questionable shot selection by Kusal Perera, you can say that he bats this way but that doesn't cover up the fact that it was a very substandard shot selection. You cannot just plant your front foot and hit across the line in the first 30 minutes of a Test match.
Oshada Fernandob James Anderson 0 4 0 0 0
4.5
James Anderson to Oshada Fernando, OUT! Drags it on! Another wicket down in the 5th over and Anderson is on fire. Back of a length delivery outside off, Fernando stands back to push at it but there is some extra bounce. It takes the inner half of his bat and cannons onto his stumps. The batsman can consider himself unlucky but he had no business hanging his bat so wide away from his body. Poor technique. Yet another sorry start for Sri Lanka.
Angelo Mathewsc Jos Buttler b James Anderson 110 238 11 0 46.22
88.6
James Anderson to Angelo Mathews, OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Hmm... we got there in the end. It is a superb review from England. They knew that they needed to get rid of Mathews. Full length ball on off and middle, Angelo Mathews looks to defend that but to the naked eye he seems to have missed it. The ball hits the pads and goes to Buttler, who takes it. England go up in appeal for a caught behind but the umpire is unmoved. Joe Root decides to take the review though. The ball is very close to the bat and the third umpire calls for the Ultra Edge. Right then, what do we have there? There is a spike as the ball passes the bat. Out it will be. Yes, but there is some confusion and long delay from the third umpire. Finally, he is satisfied and asks the on-field umpire to reverse his decision. Phew.... it took ages to convey the decision. Superb piece of bowling from Anderson. He got that to jag off the seam. End of a brilliant knock from Angelo Mathews. But his wicket has given an opening to England early on Day 2.
Dinesh Chandimal (C)lbw b Mark Wood 52 121 4 1 42.98
68.6
Mark Wood to Dinesh Chandimal, OUT! It's cannoning into the leg stump and the century partnership is broken. Big smile on Joe Root's face. Hard work pays off for Wood. He might not be too accurate in this spell but he has worked hard and deserves this breakthrough. Hurls across a length ball around off and it jags into the batsman with the angle, Chandimal is caught on the back foot in an attempt to defend it. He misses and is trapped on the pads. The appeal is made and the umpire agrees. Chandimal reviews the decision but it's all red in the Ball Tracker. Chandimal returns and Wood thanks the heavens. First wicket for him in this series.
Niroshan Dickwella (W)c Jack Leach b James Anderson 92 144 10 0 63.89
120.4
James Anderson to Niroshan Dickwella, OUT! CAUGHT! Oh dear! Oh dear! Niroshan Dickwella departs. Commentator's curse, given that Arnold was praising him a while ago. And it is yet another five-wicket haul for James Anderson in Tests. His 30th in fact. Well bowled. It was full and outside the off pole area, Niroshan Dickwella wanted to clear the head of mid off there. He strokes his drive uppishly. But it was not aerial enough. Jack Leach, at mid off, runs to his right, stretches his arms and takes a very good catch. For a moment, it looked like it would get away from Leach. But he hangs on. Dickwella falls 8 runs shy of his maiden Test hundred.
Ramesh Mendisc Jos Buttler b Mark Wood 0 7 0 0 0
91.6
Mark Wood to Ramesh Mendis, OUT! CAUGHT! Down the leg side, it is a brilliant grab. Would you believe that? Would you believe that? Wow! Fullish length ball on the pads, Mendis looks to tickle it down to the fine leg region. Gets an edge on it and the ball goes to the left of Jos Buttler, down the leg side. Buttler dives to that side and takes a very good catch. Wood's introduction on Day 2 works wonders. He gets his second. Mendis goes for a duck on debut. Not the debut, he would have wanted.
Dilruwan Pererac Jack Leach b Sam Curran 67 170 8 1 39.41
139.3
Sam Curran to Dilruwan Perera, OUT! CAUGHT! Finally the last wicket falls! Sam Curran also has a wicket to his name! Perera has played a wonderful knock and has taken Sri Lanka to 381. Short ball on middle, Perera pulls it to deep square leg. Leach runs across, slides and takes a very good catch. SRI LANKA ALL OUT FOR 381.
Suranga Lakmalc Zak Crawley b James Anderson 0 2 0 0 0
120.6
James Anderson to Suranga Lakmal, OUT! TAKEN! One brings two they say. James Anderson gets another wicket. The three changes that Sri Lanka made for this match - all of them register ducks. Tough conditions for fast bowling but not tough for Anderson. Full length delivery, Lakmal comes forward and goes for the drive. He though gets a thick outside edge and it goes over the head of Crawley at gully. He takes a sharp catch.
Lasith Embuldeniyac Joe Root b Mark Wood 7 33 0 1 21.21
132.6
Mark Wood to Lasith Embuldeniya, OUT! TAKEN! But this time, the outside edge is generated and is taken. Length and outside the off pole, Embuldeniya looks to drive it on the off side but ends up generating an outside edge there. Finally, one would reckon (or at least the visitors would). It goes to the English skipper at first slip who manages to hold onto it. You could see that Wood was letting the frustration go there, as he got the wicket. He was bowling his heart out to the left-hander and beating him previously, on the outside edge. This time, the outside edge is generated, it is taken, and Wood is a relieved man.

Zak Crawleyc Lahiru Thirimanne b Lasith Embuldeniya 5 24 1 0 20.83
7.1
Lasith Embuldeniya to Zak Crawley, OUT! CAUGHT! Ohh... that's off the edge. And it has been taken as well. Both the England openers are gone. Full and on middle, it pitches and moves away. Zak is made to play at that. He comes forward and looks to defend it. But he ends up getting an outside edge there. It goes straight into the hands of Lahiru Thirimanne at first slip, who takes it.
Dom Sibleylbw b Lasith Embuldeniya 0 14 0 0 0
5.2
Lasith Embuldeniya to Dom Sibley, OUT! It is a good decision. Full length delivery on middle and leg, Dom looks to flick that but to the naked eye, he seems to have missed it. Gets rapped on the pads and there is an appeal for a LBW. The umpire thinks and thinks before finally raising the finger. Sibley has a chat with Zak, about whether to take the review or not. The dilly-dallyness of the umpire makes him flash the 'T'. It goes upstairs. There is no bat involved, as per UltraEdge. Ball Tracker is in.... THREE REDS! Another failure for Dom Sibley. Sri Lanka and Lasith Embuldeniya though, are off to a great start.
Jonny Bairstowc Oshada Fernando b Lasith Embuldeniya 28 73 5 0 38.36
35.5
Lasith Embuldeniya to Jonny Bairstow, OUT! CAUGHT! There is a spike as the ball passed the bat and Bairstow goes. End of a wonderful partnership. This is excellent bowling from Lasith Embuldeniya! Floated ball on the pads, Bairstow looks to defend but he seems to have edged it onto the pads and then towards second slip. Sri Lanka appeal but the umpire is unmoved. Bairstow had started to walk but then walks back as he sees that the umpire has given it not out. The Sri Lankans are confident. They take the review. The front foot is fine. The Ultra Edge rolls in and it shows that there is a spike on it. Bairstow will have to go and Sri Lanka break the threatening partnership.
Joe Root (C)run out (Oshada Fernando) 186 309 18 0 60.19
114.2
Dilruwan Perera to Joe Root, OUT! RUN OUT! Root has been dismissed. Oshada does really well at short leg to get rid of the rock, that was Root. Flighted and around off, even though it is the last over of the day, Root still wants to be positive and comes down the track to clip this one to the mid-wicket region. He, though gets an inside edge towards the short leg fielder where Oshada was stationed. He quickly stops the ball and flicks it back towards the striker's end. He hits the target. And now, the third umpire comes into play. Replays roll in and it is seen that Root is well short. A very good innings from the skipper comes to an end. With that big wicket, IT IS STUMPS ON DAY 3!
Dan Lawrencec Lahiru Thirimanne b Lasith Embuldeniya 3 21 0 0 14.29
41.2
Lasith Embuldeniya to Dan Lawrence, OUT! CAUGHT AT FIRST SLIP! Embuldeniya gets another! Fourth wicket for him! This is brilliant stuff from the left-arm spinner and Sri Lanka are having a wonderful start to Day 3. Nothing much that Dan Lawrence could have done there. Embuldeniya bowls a floated ball on off, spinning away. Lawrence lunges forward and then looks to defend but it takes the outside edge and goes to first slip where Lahiru Thirimanne takes a simple catch. This is where Embuldeniya has to bowl more often. Terrific stuff.
Jos Buttler (W)c Oshada Fernando b Ramesh Mendis 55 95 7 0 57.89
70.5
Ramesh Mendis to Jos Buttler, OUT! CAUGHT! Buttler goes back now and Mendis is the one who strikes. These two had a promising stand building but Mendis comes in and breaks it apart. Floated around off, Buttler looks to reverse sweep this one but the ball takes the inside edge and to the naked eye, it seems to have hit the ground and then gone to the short leg fielder. The players get happy and appeal but no says the umpire. The umpires then converge and take this one upstairs. And replays confirm that this indeed was not off the ground, but off Buttler's boot and it was a clean catch by Fernando as well. Will be out and Sri Lanka finally have their breakthrough.
Sam Curranc Lahiru Thirimanne b Lasith Embuldeniya 13 43 0 1 30.23
81.2
Lasith Embuldeniya to Sam Curran, OUT! CAUGHT! Sri Lanka have struck right at the stroke of Tea, which is a very nice time to scalp a wicket. Lasith gets his 5th wicket of the game and he will be very happy with his show so far. Floats it up nicely and around off, Curran lunges forward and looks to block this one out but the ball spins away and kisses the outside edge. Goes towards Thirimanne at first slip and he is not going to make a meal of this. Takes it easily and the new ball has done the trick for the Islanders. With that, IT WILL BE TEA ON DAY 3!
Dom Bessc Lahiru Thirimanne b Lasith Embuldeniya 32 95 4 0 33.68
109.5
Lasith Embuldeniya to Dom Bess, OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! No doubt about this one and Sri Lanka have finally broken the partnership. Lasith is the one to do so again as he gets his 6th. This is tossed up on off, it pitches and then turns away sharply. Bess looks to defend but the ball hits the glove due to the extra bounce and the fielder at first slip, Thirimanne takes it. 48 is still the trail. England will hope they can take some sort of a lead. Can Sri Lanka take another wicket quickly? Replays just showed how good a catch that was. It initially hit the edge due to which Thirimanne was moving his hands to his left but then it hits the glove and lobs to his right. He adjusts really well and takes it.
Mark Woodc Lahiru Thirimanne b Lasith Embuldeniya 1 6 0 0 16.67
111.2
Lasith Embuldeniya to Mark Wood, OUT! CAUGHT! Another one falls and Sri Lanka are doing well to wrap up the tail now. 7th wicket for Lasith and also the 5th catch for Thirimanne. Flighted and around off, Wood looks to swipe this one across the line with all his might but he can only connect his attempted stroke with an outside edge. The ball lobs behind to the left of the first slip, where Thirimanne reacts quickly and takes the catch well. England still trail by 44 runs.
Jack Leachlbw b Dilruwan Perera 1 17 0 0 5.88
116.1
Dilruwan Perera to Jack Leach, OUT! LBW! That was plumb, to the naked eye. Umpire Dharmasena, raises his finger for the second time, after the third umpire conveyed his decision after the review was taken. Full length ball on middle and off, Jack gets down to sweep but misses. Gets pinged on the pads. Sri Lanka go up in appeal and umpire Dharmasena raises the finger. Leach gets to the other end and then flashes the 'T'. No bat on the ball there and Ball Tracker gives Leach the marching orders. ENGLAND BOWLED OUT FOR 344!

Kusal Pereralbw b Jack Leach 14 25 2 0 56
5.2
Jack Leach to Kusal Perera, OUT! It's umpire's call! The decision stays as it is and it's a big breakthrough for England as Kusal Perera has a reputation to score quickly. Now we know why Leach started from 'round the wicket. He wanted to bowl as straight as possible on this surface. Does just that and bags his first wicket of the match. A flighted delivery landing full on middle, Perera goes down with the sweep shot but it goes under his bat, beats the front pad and strikes him on the stomach, right in front of the wickets. They appeal and the finger goes up. Kusal goes for the DRS after consulting his partner. The Ultra Edge finds no wood and the Ball Tracker shows it to be clipping the top of the stumps. Perera is gone! Sri Lanka are effectively 56/1.
Lahiru Thirimannec Zak Crawley b Jack Leach 13 33 0 0 39.39
13.5
Jack Leach to Lahiru Thirimanne, OUT! That's a very smart and sharp catch by Zak Crawley at short leg. Leach once again gives his delivery a good toss and lands it fuller around off, Thirimanne walks forward with the flick shot but his bat turns in his hands as the ball spins to make contact. Crawley keeps his eyes on the ball and snaps a superb reflex catch. Root is ecstatic. Sri Lanka lead by 74 runs.
Oshada Fernandoc Zak Crawley b Dom Bess 3 19 0 0 15.79
10.4
Dom Bess to Oshada Fernando, OUT! CAUGHT! Big inside edge. Double failure for Fernando. So, spin from both ends working for the English team. Bess' persistence finally pays off. He lands a loopy one on off and middle, Oshada Fernando strides forward and looks to defend that. But the ball turns when you defend like that. Turns, gets the inside edge and clips the pads. Goes to the man at short leg who takes a simple catch. Zak Crawley it is. The finger is up immediately as well. Sri Lanka are effectively 66/2!
Angelo Mathewsb Dom Bess 5 11 0 0 45.45
14.4
Dom Bess to Angelo Mathews, OUT! BOWLED! Sri Lanka in trouble. They have lost their fourth wicket. Spin did not do anything for the tourists in the first innings. Look at it now - 2 apiece for Leach and Bess. This time, Bess lands the off break outside the off pole line. Angelo lets out a big stride forward and across and looks to sweep. He though misses as the ball lands on the rough, comes back in sharply, and shatters the off stump.
Dinesh Chandimal (C)c James Anderson b Jack Leach 9 6 2 0 150
15.6
Jack Leach to Dinesh Chandimal, OUT! Poor, poor shot selection! Have to say, Chandimal has thrown his wicket away. Calculated risk is fine but this one is just an ugly swipe across the line. Leach once again tempts the batsman with a flighted delivery, lands it full on middle, DC accepts the proposal to play another slog sweep but this time the ball spins to catch the top edge. It flies behind mid on and James Anderson turns back, takes a 360-degree turn in fact, twists and turns and does exceedingly well to pouch that skier. Brilliant, the old man has terrific hands and he has taken a stunning catch. Sri Lanka are effectively 84/5! Interestingly, before this wicket, Root chirped from first slip - 'Come on, Chandi! Throw your wicket away...' Chandimal has obliged, if we can say that!
Niroshan Dickwella (W)c Dan Lawrence b Dom Bess 7 14 1 0 50
20.1
Dom Bess to Niroshan Dickwella, OUT! GONE! It is Niroshan. He has hit it aerial to covers. For the second time, in this match, Dickwella is out, on the off side. Joe is a very happy man alright. He put down Mendis earlier but looks like England will go into Lunch, with 6 wickets having been snared. Flighted delivery around off, Niroshan steps out and goes for an uppish cover drive. Dan Lawrence, at covers, takes a good catch, diving forward. It is a shot that Dickwella would never want to look at, again.
Ramesh Mendisc Jos Buttler b Jack Leach 16 20 3 0 80
25.1
Jack Leach to Ramesh Mendis, OUT! CAUGHT! Ramesh Mendis has to walk back now. Attempted to play a few shots on his debut. Departs for 16 in the second innings. Full and on off and middle, Mendis attempts another sweep. To the naked eye, he seems to have missed it. The ball appeared to have hit his pads and England go up in appeal, for an LBW. As the appeal is put in, Buttler takes the ball, which lobbed up, and appeals for a catch as well. Which one is it? Or is it neither? Umpire Dharmasena was unmoved, initially, to either. England take a bit of time and review it. First, the third umpire wants to see if there was bat involved there. Replays are in and.... yes there was bat involved. And Jos Buttler took it cleanly as well. Unfortunate way to get out. An under edge, which had lobbed off Mendis' boot.
Dilruwan Pererac Zak Crawley b Dom Bess 4 13 0 0 30.77
22.3
Dom Bess to Dilruwan Perera, OUT! Yet another sharp catch by Zak Crawley. He is exceptionally sharp at short leg. A floated full ball landing on middle, an off spinner, Perera leans forward and flicks it across the line. He fails to keep it down and Crawley is waiting like a hawk. Completes a superb reflex catch. Mind you, it's never easy to catch those but Zak made that look very easy. Sri Lanka are effectively 107/7!
Suranga Lakmalnot out 11 32 1 0 34.38
Lasith Embuldeniyac Jonny Bairstow b Joe Root 40 42 6 1 95.24
35.4
Joe Root to Lasith Embuldeniya, OUT! Caught at first slip, finally! Root gets the breakthrough and it ends a fine useful knock by Embuldeniya. A tossed up ball outside off, landing full, Lasith reaches out for it and tries to push it with an open face of his blade. But it takes the outside edge and Bairstow makes no mistake this time. The 48-run stand has been broken and Sri Lanka lead by 163 runs.
Asitha Fernandob Joe Root 0 1 0 0 0
35.5
Joe Root to Asitha Fernando, OUT! Root cleans it up! Sri Lanka are all out for 126! Too full in length and outside off, Asitha tries to block it and does so well too. But somehow, the ball lands and then turns to disturb the stumps. A freak dismissal. Root has a big smile on his face, two wickets to his name now.

Lasith Embuldeniya to Zak Crawley, OUT! TAKEN! Embuldeniya again. Believe it or not. Zak Crawley though played it away from his body. Lasith loops it nicely, around off, Zak prods forward and looks to block it. The ball though pitches, bounces extra, takes his gloves, the top part of it. Lobs in the air towards first slip. Oshada, at second slip though, has other plans. He puts in a scintillating dive to his left and takes an excellent catch.

Bairstow rocks back and looks to punch this on the off side. He though misses and gets hit on the pads. Sri Lanka appeal for the LBW and this time, umpire Kumar Dharmasena, after pondering for a little while, raises his finger. Jonny Bairstow takes it upstairs. Replays are in, the Ultra Edge says that there was no bat involved. Onto Ball Tracker then - Wickets are umpire's call and Sri Lanka would feel that finally, an umpire's call has gone their way.

A tossed up ball landing full around off, Root gets across the stumps for the sweep shot but fails to connect. It spins past his bat and disturbs the leg stump. Perhaps a bit of glove as well, as the ball deflects onto the stumps. Yes, the replays confirm that. Joe got too much across the stumps there. Sri Lanka have an opening.
