2011 - Swann spins India out at The Oval
With the series already in the bag, Andrew Strauss decided to bat first on a good batting track at the Oval. The batsmen justified their captain's call and made mammoth runs. Eventually, Strauss was happy to declare the innings at 591/6 on Day 2. Rahul Dravid waged a lone battle for India but was not able to stop England from enforcing the follow-on. With enough runs in the bank and with a pitch that had a fair bit of rough, Graeme Swann decided to make merry. India were desperate to end the tour on a high and after experimenting with a number of opening partnerships, they decided to open with Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid.
However, nothing went India's way as Swann removed both in quick succession after the duo had managed to get the side off to a decent start. Nightwatchman Amit Mishra and Sachin Tendulkar fought hard but Swann came back and ran through the Indian batting line-up. With six wickets in the second innings, Swann ended with match figures of 9/208, the best by a bowler in the entire series. Fittingly, he helped England win by an innings and snatch the number one Test ranking away from India.
So, both teams head to Lord's with the five-match Test series locked at 0-0. Will Lord's dish out a sporting wicket to facilitate a result? Will India include Ashwin in their XI? Will Cook rumble back into form? Is Kerrigan strong enough to come back? To find out all the answers join us back for the second Test starting on Thursday. Cheers for your warm company. Before we take leave, do treat yourself to part 15 of our pick of the memorable performances in India-England Tests in England.
Anderson: 'I still can't believe it. I will be showing this to Joe later on (pointing to his medal). It was easier on a pitch like that where the ball is not flying around your ears. It was amazing we managed to build such a partnership. We will look for more life at Lord's to go for a result. We forced for a win today. However, it was not to be. Cook did well to get the carry (referring to his captain's wicket). The rest of us were struggling.'
James Anderson is the Man of the Match for his 81 with the bat in a world record last wicket stand with Root in addition to a match haul of 4 wickets.
Dhoni: 'Overall, it was a good Test match for us. Binny has played a lot of domestic cricket. He is somebody who can contribute both with the bat and ball. The IPL exposure has helped him. This wicket did not suit his bowling. There was not much for the spinners, Jadeja has the ability to exploit the rough well. That is one area where Jadeja does better than Ashwin (when asked about Ashwin's non-selection). The fast bowlers bowled well too. We did quite a few things but it did not work (referring to the Root-Anderson stand). Once the bowlers got tired and the ball got softer it was difficult for us. A lot of our youngsters have been doing well. They fought hard and put up a fight.'
Cook: 'It was an extraordinary moment. It is something I am going to cherish. It was Bob Willis style (when enquired about his wicket). We had a poor session and lost 6 wickets on this wicket. But Root dragged us out of it. It was an amazing hundred. Jimmy got 81 as well. I did not see it coming. It is a tough job being the groundsman. It was not an ideal pitch, he did not get it right. Apart from that one session with the bat, we did well. We got some reverse but it was pretty flat. Kerrigan had a tough experience on his debut but he has a good first-class record. He is bowling well at the nets, he is an option for Lord's. I think both sides would want some bounce. He has fought hard, it will be interesting to see how he copes. Our pacers have bowled a lot of overs already. Spin does not normally play a huge role here at Trent Bridge. We have Jordan and Woakes as well. We will pick the best XI for Lord's.'
The Yorkshire batsman shielded Jimmy before the Burnley Lara arose to wade into the Indian bowlers, making merry on a flat pitch. Meanwhile, both teams will be pondering over another spin option for the second Test at the HQ. Do stick around for the presentation folks.
Looking back, both sides had some plusses. Murali Vijay, exhibiting vast reserves of concentration set the tone for India's performance on the opening day, notching up his first hundred outside the sub-continent before following it up with an equally impressive fifty. Ishant Sharma, Bhuvi and Shami clicked in unison to check England to 298-9 before the Root-Anderson show.
As the match petered out to a predictable statemate Ali Cook nabbed Ishant to provide some late entertainment.
India endured a chaotic start on the fifth morning, losing Kohli, Rahane and Dhoni cheaply. The debutant Binny, who was India's forgotten bowler, stepped up with the bat, engineering a match saving fifty on debut amid some trepidition. He was ably assisted by Jadeja and Bhuvneshwar. The UP bowler, capped the Test with another fine fifty, becoming only the 16th player to claim two fifties in a Test to go with a 5-fer in the second innings.
So, the flat TB wicket has produced a draw. However, it was a hard fought game with both teams fighting tooth and nail. India would have had their noses ahead until Root and Jimmy conjured up a world record last wicket stand to alter the script. Pujara and Vijay laid a solid platform in the second innings but England removed them off successive balls to leave the match hanging in the balance.
Dhoni declares the Indian innings. It's time to shut the shop. The players shake hands over a draw. Root and Jimmy pick up stumps as souvenirs. The heroic duo lead England off the field.

2002 - Tendulkar shines in India's historical win
With the series stationed at 1-0 after two Test matches, Sourav Ganguly opted to bat first in the third Test match at Leeds. Though Virender Sehwag perished early, Sanjay Bangar and Rahul Dravid steadied the ship with a fine second wicket stand before the former fell for 68. Sachin Tendulkar joined Dravid at the crease and they made batting look pretty easy out in the middle. The hosts managed to remove Dravid for 148 on the second morning, but Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly made life really difficult for the hosts.
Nasser Hussain tried everything he had up his sleeve but his bowlers were unable to separate the duo. Once they went past their hundreds, both Tendulkar and Ganguly scored at will. Eventually, Tendulkar fell agonizingly seven runs short of his double-hundred as India posted a mammoth 628/8 in the first innings. The bowlers then backed up the efforts of the batsmen and helped India win by an innings and 46 runs. It was a historic occasion for India as they beat England in England, in a Test match, after 16 years.
Sip on your tea with part 14 of our pick of the most memorable performances in India-England Tests in England.
Bhuvi also showed good application to keep Binny company. The latter fell to Ali at the stroke of tea but India, having extended their lead past 300, are in safe shores. Do join us back for the final session of the match in a short while.
Day 5, Tea. It is safe to say that the game's off. Binny and Bhuvneshwar have thwarted England's hopes of an outside chance of a win. Jadeja perished to the new ball but Binny soldiered on, reaching a fighting fifty on Test debut. As his knock progressed, the Karnataka all-rounder came into his own, essaying some aggressive strokes.

Welcome back for the post-lunch session. Can England break this partnership before the new ball is available, and then wrap up the tail? Will Binny and Jadeja continue to resist the England attack? All the answers coming up in a short while as play about to start...
2011 - Bell brilliance ensures whitewash
Having already lost the series, India were looking for some respite in the fourth and final Test at the Oval. More importantly, they were looking to avoid an embarrassing whitewash. England opted to bat with a good pitch to bat on. Though the Indian bowlers fought for a while, Ian Bell combined well with Kevin Pietersen to counter-attack the visitors in grand fashion, so much so that they scored 331 runs in the last 72 overs of their massive 350-run stand for the 3rd wicket. This was the second best 3rd wicket stand for England in Tests.
Though Pietersen fell for 175, Bell continued and went on to make a career-best 235, the fourth highest score by a batsman in India-England Test matches. In the end, the knock was good enough for the England bowlers to achieve an innings win and complete the whitewash in style.
Before you run away for a break, to do whatever you please - have a read on part 13 of the most memorable performances in England-India Tests in England. Enjoy!
This pair has batted for 85 balls and during the later part of the stand, they have looked quite comfortable. Still plenty of work to do for the second new ball is just 5 overs away and both Broad and Anderson will be bowling with it. A possible 63 overs left in the day and the visitors will feel safe only when they can see off another 20-25 overs. This match is set for a fascinating conclusion. Before that there is the post-lunch session. Do join us soon for that.
A mixed session that. England grabbed the initiative during the first hour, when they used the reverse swing to great effect. Kohli and Rahane didn't last too long. Dhoni was dropped by Cook and he went thereafter to Plunkett's first delivery of the day. Jadeja took 38 balls to get off the mark, so it was all about survival then. But since Binny has come in, things have improved for India.
End of over 75 ( 13 Runs )IND 230/6 74.6Liam Plunkett to Ravindra Jadeja. FOUR, smashing pull. In front of square. Sat up nicely for the shot and Jadeja didn't miss out. Good end to the session as three boundaries came in that last over. That will be lunch on day 5
Last ball before lunch coming up
74.5Liam Plunkett to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, wasted delivery down leg, easily left alone by Jadeja
74.4Liam Plunkett to Ravindra Jadeja. FOUR, this is a cracking pull shot. Rides the bounce and rolls his wrists to pull wide of a diving backward square leg. Beats the fine leg fielder too. Well played and some glove love between Jadeja and Binny
74.3Liam Plunkett to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, short of length outside off, Jadeja taps to the point region, looks for the single, isn't there
Still Plunkett continues from round the wicket to Jadeja
74.2Liam Plunkett to Stuart Binny. 1 run, does the sensible thing by getting away from strike, after tapping to cover
74.1Liam Plunkett to Stuart Binny. FOUR, Binny is having no trouble with these short balls. He gets into position, transfers his weight and pulls hard and down to the deep backward square leg fence. Nailed the shot. First ball from round the wicket and it has gone to the boundary
Liam Plunkett [16.0-1-55-2] is back into the attack
End of over 74 ( 0 Runs )IND 217/6 maiden over bowled by Moeen Ali 73.6Moeen Ali to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, loud, loud shout for lbw. Prior is pleading with Dharma. Nothing doing says the Sri Lankan offie as he hands the sweater back to Moeen Ali. Looked a close shout, but Jadeja may have got outside the line of off. Jadeja actually wasn't playing a shot, he had the bat tucked in behind the pad. Replays in: Impact outside off, but not sure whether Jadeja was playing a stroke there.
73.5Moeen Ali to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, blocked from the crease
73.4Moeen Ali to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, nearly sneaked through. The inside edge onto the pads saved Jadeja there as he played outside the line of the ball. Lots of chirp from Prior behind the stumps

72.4Ben Stokes to Stuart Binny. no run, back to the short of length stuff, Binny is once again comfortable in his back foot defence
72.3Ben Stokes to Stuart Binny. no run, Binny falls for the bait, almost! Went after a full delivery outside off, trying to drive and nearly nicked it. Clever bowling from Stokes after all those predictable short of length deliveries
72.2Ben Stokes to Stuart Binny. no run, Binny shows the full face of the bat and punches it to the silly mid-on fielder
72.1Ben Stokes to Stuart Binny. no run, good length and swinging in, forces Binny to come on the front foot and defend
End of over 72 ( 1 Runs )IND 217/6 71.6Moeen Ali to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, very short, Ravindra Jadeja smacked the leather off it, and Bell at short extra feels the pinch, fielding and then wringing his hands in pain

71.3Moeen Ali to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, slower, turning away after pitching outside off, left alone

71.1Moeen Ali to Stuart Binny. no run, uses his feet and drives it back to Moeen Ali
End of over 71 ( 5 Runs )IND 216/6 70.6Ben Stokes to Stuart Binny. 1 run, short and Binny is quick to rock back and pull to deep mid-wicket. Didn't time it too well though
70.5Ben Stokes to Stuart Binny. FOUR, there was a front foot cover drive earlier, now the back foot punch from Binny. Superbly played. Wide of the cover fielder trying to dive across to cut it off. The ball just raced away to the fence. That's two good strokes he has played during the course of this innings
70.4Ben Stokes to Stuart Binny. no run, Stokes needs to get Binny on the front foot, very easy now for Binny to get back and block with these back of a length deliveries
70.3Ben Stokes to Stuart Binny. no run, Binny gets forward and then defends to short cover
These two have put on a nice little stand. The pressure has come down a bit

End of over 69 ( 2 Runs )IND 209/6 68.6Ben Stokes to Ravindra Jadeja. 1 run, short delivery comes, but Ravindra Jadeja has seen it early, swivels and pulls to backward square leg, only a single as the fielder has been kept back for that shot
A silly point right in Jadeja's face now
68.5Ben Stokes to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, good short delivery, banged in, equally well played by Ravindra Jadeja, he hops up and blocks it safely on the off-side
68.4Ben Stokes to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, oohs and aahs from the fielders behind the wicket. Jadeja misses the whip, the ball thuds into the thigh pad and rolls into the off-side
68.3Ben Stokes to Stuart Binny. 1 run, flicks in the air, but nowhere near anyone on the on-side, a single taken
68.2Ben Stokes to Stuart Binny. no run, sharp inswing for Stokes, Binny clamps down on it at the last instant, the ball rolls to the right of Stokes

66.2Ben Stokes to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, uses his feet and punches to the off-side, no room to play the forcing stroke
66.1Ben Stokes to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, comes back in sharply, and Ravindra Jadeja had to be quick to get his bat down, which he did. If that hit the pad, Jadeja was dead

200 runs for IND 65.2Liam Plunkett to Stuart Binny. FOUR, the shot of the day so far. Alright it was overpitched outside off, but that's a textbook cover drive on a bent knee. Short cover dived, but had no chance. All along the ground too. Great pose too from the son of Roger
65.1Liam Plunkett to Stuart Binny. no run, nudged to short mid-wicket
End of over 65 ( 3 Runs )IND 196/6 64.6Ben Stokes to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, Ravindra Jadeja holds the pose after playing a solid back foot defensive stroke

63.4Liam Plunkett to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, beaten! From that angle, from round the wicket, it seems to come in and once it pitches on the seam it darts away ever so slightly to miss the forward defence of Jadeja
63.3Liam Plunkett to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, gets forward and defends solidly
Now Jadeja pulls out just as Plunkett was in the air, ready to hurl the delivery
63.2Liam Plunkett to Stuart Binny. 3 runs, cut away past point, good shot that. Stokes slipped and that gave the batsmen the chance to run the third, but the Durham man fired in a bullet throw back to Prior, Jadeja had to stretch and did well to make it without requiring a dive. Shows how athletic he is. It was Jadeja who wanted the third, Binny wasn't too keen. Eventually, it turned to be fine from an Indian viewpoint
What has happened here? Has Jadeja run himself out? No. He is just in. That would've been a calamity. Jadeja is in.
63.1Liam Plunkett to Stuart Binny. no run, nips back in, but not enough to hit off, Binny shoulders arms

Stuart Binny, right handed bat, comes to the crease
With that wicket, the players have taken drinks. What a first hour it has been for England. They have bowled with purpose, reversed the ball well and have taken three wickets. The game has been awoken from its slumber. Definitely a result possible is what England would think. Coming back to that Dhoni dismissal, replays show that it flicked the pad and then went on to the stumps.
61.1Liam Plunkett to MS Dhoni. out Bowled!! Plunkett has knocked over Dhoni. Reversed in sharply from a fuller length, Dhoni cleared his front leg, trying to drive through the line, the ball sneaked past the shot and clattered into the stumps. Plunkett exults. Cook should breathe easy now. His dropped catch off Dhoni hasn't come back to haunt him. Dhoni b Plunkett 11(30) [4s-2]
Liam Plunkett [12.0-1-42-1] is back into the attack

58.2James Anderson to MS Dhoni. no run, nips in sharply and Dhoni has to be quick to get the bat down, manages to turn it to short mid-wicket

55.3Stuart Broad to MS Dhoni. no run, dropped by Cook at 1st slip. Can you believe it? You have to for it was a regulation chance and shelled by the England skipper. Jadeja then walks up to Dhoni and has a word
54.1James Anderson to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, why is Ravindra Jadeja poking out at balls outside off, only he should know. Follows the angle of the delivery with his hands and so nearly edges it. Just an inch or so away from the nick

49.5Stuart Broad to MS Dhoni. no run, the ball is definitely reversing now. Swings back in sharply and nearly pings Dhoni on the pad, only the inside edge onto the pads saved Dhoni there. The Indian skipper didn't know where the ball went and was plonking his bat inside the crease
49.4Stuart Broad to MS Dhoni. no run, poor stroke. Granted it was short and wide outside off, was there for the cut, but Dhoni slashed and missed. So nearly could've nicked it
MS Dhoni, right handed bat, comes to the crease
49.3Stuart Broad to Virat Kohli. out Lbw!! That's plumb. Broad didn't even turn around to appeal. He just ran forward knowing that it will be given by Dharma. Nicely set up too - he brought this one back sharply, Kohli got his front foot too far across, played around his front pad, missed and was dead. That's a double failure for him in this match. India lose a wicket very early on day 5. Just the start England would've hoped for. Kohli lbw b Broad 8(29) [4s-1]
Catching short cover and just the lone slip in place too
49.2Stuart Broad to Virat Kohli. no run, solid forward defence from Kohli
Silly mid-on in place for Kohli against Broad
49.1Stuart Broad to Ajinkya Rahane. 1 run, pushed past Broad, straight down the ground, a belated decision to take the single, but easily done eventually
End of over 49 ( 0 Runs )IND 167/3 maiden over bowled by James Anderson 48.6James Anderson to Virat Kohli. no run, softly turned to short mid-wicket
48.5James Anderson to Virat Kohli. no run, oohs and aahs from the Englishmen after that one swung in late, Kohli though had it covered and pushes it softly towards mid-on
48.4James Anderson to Virat Kohli. no run, that hit the bat splice, bounced a bit extra and Kohli immediately took his bottom hand off the handle after playing that. No damage done though as the ball rolls to cover
48.3James Anderson to Virat Kohli. no run, short of length on off, solidly defended back down the wicket
48.2James Anderson to Virat Kohli. no run, bit of indip for Anderson, Kohli turns it with soft hands to the man at short mid-wicket
48.1James Anderson to Virat Kohli. no run, pitched up outside off, Kohli gets forward and push-drives towards mid-off
So the players are ready to go. Kohli to face the first ball. Anderson has the ball.
Pitch report: Two words about the pitch according to Alan Wilkins - 'Grumpy and nothing.' He compares the pitch to a grumpy bank manager - entertaining stuff!
Just in: The covers are being peeled off the field. Play will start at 11:15 Local Time, provided there is no further rain.
Oopsy, bad news friends. It has started raining again, the covers come onto the field.
Cutting back to TB, it is quite dreary and gloomy now. There was a shower in the morning to go with the overnight rains. Hopefully, play kicks off on time.
In other news, Lancashire spinner, Simon Kerrigan, who endured a horror debut against Australia in the Ashes last year, is in line to be picked for the second Test at the HQ.
'England deserved credit for its fight, but Dhoni wasn't entirely innocent. He and his medium-pacers got blinkered to the idea of bouncing out Anderson with the fielders forming an umbrella cordon. The off-with-your-head philosophy just didn't work.'
Vijaya Kumar writes, 'Last-wicket pairs are supposed to split quickly in a variety of ways; a comical shot, cart-wheeling stumps or the tame edge. The first Test here at Trent Bridge bucked those odds with a vengeance. If for India, it was Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammad Shami, who added 111 and embarrassed England, the host found its saviours in centurion Joe Root and James Anderson on the fourth day.'
Meanwhile, K.C Vijaya Kumar's report for the Hindu carries the headline: 'Root and Anderson dig in, create history'
'There were many questions asked about India on Friday. One was from Geoffrey Boycott from the commentary box: “What is the man who bowls off-spin and carrom balls doing in the dressing room?'
'The first session showed that India not only misread the pitch, but had picked the wrong horse. They hadn't even utilised the available resources well or employed the right tactics. These are early days in the series, but there are those who vouch that the famous Dhoni Test match freeze might have been sighted at Trent Bridge.'
Sandeep Dwivedi writing for the Indian Express, questions MS Dhoni's baffling tactics. Dwivedi adds, 'The 26 wicketless overs that England needed to take the lead this morning saw Mahendra Singh Dhoni look far and wide. His bowling changes and funky field placements failed to dislodge the last-wicket pair of Joe Root and James Anderson. Dhoni tried everything. He even threw the ball to opener Murali Vijay. But nothing worked. '
Booth adds, 'Prior allayed fears with a smart catch to his left to see off India opener Shikhar Dhawan on Wednesday morning, but has since missed three chances low to his right: MS Dhoni was dropped on 50 on the second morning, and on Saturday afternoon he twice failed to lay a glove on chances offered by Murali Vijay. Whether Buttler would have snaffled them may no longer be the point. He is 23, full of drive and invention, and is averaging 40 for struggling Lancashire. He is just the sort of cricketer, in other words, who might fit neatly into the template of a brave new era.'
'The 32-year-old Prior is a warhorse of 78 Tests, well-liked by colleagues and with a proud record as a counter-attacking No 7. Things though have threatened to unravel. It's hard to be over-critical of his batting: he alone held on during England's first-innings collapse against Sri Lanka at Headingley, and on Friday here in Nottingham he fell victim to a dismal piece of umpiring from Kumar Dharmasena. But his glovework is another matter. The alarm bells began to ring at Headingley, where Prior dropped Kumar Sangakkara on 27 shortly after lunch on a chaotic first day.'
Lawrence Booth, writing for the Daily Mail, throws the spotlight on the up-down Matt Prior. He writes, 'It was after Jos Buttler's incendiary 121 off 74 balls in the Lord's one-day international against Sri Lanka in May that Alastair Cook announced his limited-overs wicketkeeper was not ready for Test cricket.'
He goes on, 'The fact is, this schedule is crazy. Trying to squeeze five Tests into 42 days is just too much and it may well be that by the end of this series we conclude they would have been better off keeping it to four because the players are too exhausted to be performing at their peak.Test matches are seriously hard work. The physical effort required to bowl or keep for a day and a half is enormous.'
Jonathan Agnew focusses on burnout in his special for BBC Sport. Agnew writes, 'The incredible 198-run partnership and two late wickets have given England an outside chance of victory, but the more likely scenario is that their bowlers are going to have to get through a lot of overs on Sunday with the Lord's Test just round the corner.'
'He deserved the plaudits too, for this was no fluke. The pitch may have been placid but his defence was sturdy and some of his attacking shots were timed with the precision of an atomic clock. Most of all he deserves credit for hanging in there while Root added a further 104 runs to his own total.'
Selvey carries on to write, 'First of all Jimmy Anderson looked flummoxed, then embarrassed. Mohammed Shami, one of the three India seamers who had been flogging away for much of the morning on the pitch of broken hearts, had just banged in a short ball to him. First he advanced, and then swivelled before swatting it to the midwicket boundary almost with one hand.'
Mike Selvey's piece for the Guardian wears the headline: 'England's Jimmy Anderson and Joe Root break records and Indian spirit'
Greetings and welcome to the final day of the opening Test at TB. As is the norm, let us have a gander at what the newspapers have in store for us before the action unfolds.
The English bowlers will be keen to make early inroads, bundle out India and stretch for a 1-0 lead. Can India's middle order thwart England's plan and salvage a draw?
Another wicket or two in the closing stages of the penultimate day could have propelled England to pole position. Kohli and Rahane saw through the pesky period with calmness although the latter played a few flamboyant strokes as well.
Joe Root and Jimmy Anderson (or well the Burnley Lara) conjured up a world record last wicket stand to frustrate the visitors and edge ahead. Later on, Che Pujara and Murali Vijay erased the thin deficit and laid a solid platform for India. However, England removed both the half-centurions off successive balls to give themselves an outside chance of a victory.
1979 - When Gavaskar played out of his skin - one of the greatest Test matches witnessed
The fourth Test at the Oval will go down as one of the finest Test matches to have ever been played in cricketing history. After opting to bat first, the hosts gained a handy 103-run first innings lead before Geoffrey Boycott powered England past 300 with a fine century in the second innings. Eventually, 438 was the target set for India. Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan got the visitors off to a good start and closed Day 4 at 76/0. The England bowlers were unable to go through their defences even on the final day and the duo carried on their good work.
Though they added over 200 runs for the first wicket, the scoring rate was not all that great in the morning session. Chauhan fell for 80 with the scoreboard reading 213/1. In came Dilip Vengsarkar. All of a sudden, Gavaskar, alongside Vengsarkar, batted aggressively to push the hosts on the back foot before Phil Edmonds ended their brisk 153-run stand. By then, Gavaskar was well set and was looking pretty ominous. Soon after completing his double-hundred, Gavaskar fell to Ian Botham for 221, his highest Test score, with India still needing 49 runs to win. The England all-rounder bowled an impressive final spell accounting for three Indian batsmen in his last four overs to halt India's progress. With 15 runs needed off the last over, the tail-enders, who were surrounded by fielders, couldn't do much and both sides settled for a draw. Gavaskar was named the Man of the Match for his brave innings which brought life to the Test match that could have otherwise ended in a boring draw.
There are only two possible results in this game, a draw or an England win. An Indian win looks far from possible and they have themselves to blame as they gave away 294 runs for the last three England wickets. Can the hosts knock off the remaining Indian wickets and go for the kill? Will the Indian batters be able to bat out a draw? We will leave you to ponder over these questions, but before we go, here is part 12 of the top 25 performances in the England-India series in England. Until tomorrow, take care and Cya!
Stumps, Day 4: Kohli and Rahane walk off after congratulating Anderson for his effort with the bat. It is England's day and they are the ones who are in with a chance to win it. First, the pair of Root and Anderson frustrated the Indians with a record last wicket partnership. Then, when it looked like the Indians were well on course for a draw, the English bowlers got rid of the two set batsmen - Vijay and Pujara. Rahane and Kohli have so far looked solid but a long day awaits them tomorrow.

2011 - Bell ensures India stay down
After Stuart Broad single-handedly turned the match on its head with a hat-trick, it was important that England seized the advantage in their second effort with the bat. Meanwhile, with two early wickets, India had their tails up and Ian Bell was under tremendous pressure to bail his side out of trouble. However, nothing stopped Bell from playing his shots and he batted positively picking up crucial boundaries. It was an added plus that Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan and Matt Prior gave him good support and the hosts put pressure right back on the Indians.
There was high drama at the tea interval on Day 3. Ian Bell, when on 137, started walking towards the dressing room without making his ground assuming that an Eoin Morgan hit had reached the fence. However, the umpire did not signal tea and India removed the bails and claimed his dismissal. After a lot of thought by the match officials, he was given out. Although, after a request by the England management during the break, captain MS Dhoni recalled Bell and was allowed to resume his innings. Eventually, Bell was dismissed for 159. But for Bell's effort, keeping the controversy aside, it would have been difficult for England to gain the upper hand in the Test match. The hosts not only registered a morale boosting win, but also took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 4-match series.
Here is part 11 of the top 25 moments in the England-India series in England...
Tea, Day 4: A session we can say that belonged to India. First they came out and got rid of Anderson, then wiped off the deficit with a solid 49-run opening stand. With a lead of 18 runs, India will look to extend that as much as possible with 36 overs left in the day. Join us back for the final session in a few minutes...
