India won by 95 runs | India Vs England 2nd Test match
More...
Third Test at The Oval, 1936
India avoided the follow-on but could not prevent a huge loss. Wally Hammond smashed 217 and was involved in a 266-run stand for the 4th wicket with Worthington who scored 128. The hosts asked India to follow-on as the visitors trailed by 249 runs after being bowled out for 222. India started their second innings strongly but all the hard work was undone by a superb spell of 7/80 by Sir Gubby Allen, which was his career best figures. Needing 64 runs to win, England achieved it in 13 overs.
Before we sign off, help yourself to part 4 of our summary of India-England Tests in England. Take care and cheerio!
Congratulations to India for sculpting a famous win. They go 1-0 up in the 5-match Test series. It will take a great deal of character from the hosts to comeback and restore parity. Do Cook and his men have it in them to pick themselves up and dust themselves off? Or will India ride on the momentum? It was a great pleasure bringing you the thrills and spills of this Test. Cheers for your warm company. Do join us back for the third Test, which starts on July 27 at The Rose Bowl.
Meanwhile, England continue to be haunted by the old demons. They lack the killer instinct to grab the game by the scruff of its neck, they seem content to wait for things to happen. Their captain looks mentally shot. So does their wicket-keeper. Bell's batting has also been thrown out of gear. England's core is disintegrating.
India finally exorcise the demons of Dominica (2011), Johannesburg (2013) and Wellington (2014). Rahane's ton, Bhuvi's all-round heroics, Vijay's solidity, Jadeja's uninhibited counter-attack, Ishant's killer spell all plunge into history as India break their pesky 15 Test win-less streak away from home. This was also India's second only Test triumph at Lord's, 28 years after Kapil Dev's boys achieved the feat.
Alec Stewart: Congratulations to India. You've thoroughly deserved your fantastic win at Lords. You've outplayed England on a very English pitch. #EngvInd
Kevin Pietersen: Don't blame me...blame the ghosts!
Lawrence Booth: Utterly dismal from England since lunch - and, of course, the man who runs out Anderson is Jadeja. Well played India!
Jonathan Agnew: India deserve to win this match. Outplayed England in their own conditions. But last half hour has been lamentable
Ian Botham: Enough is enough we have to change things & move on simply not good enough (same as my school reports ) Captain cannot go on he's scrambled!
Harsha Bhogle: this ishant spell will become part of folklore..
Mohandas Menon: Ishant Sharma's 7/74 is the 5th best by any visiting bowler at Lord's after G McGrath 8/38, B Massie 8/53 & 8/84 and S Pegler 7/65#EngvInd
Brian Murgatroyd: I hope this is a new beginning for Ishant. Remember, Bob Willis took 7 years to get 100 Test wkts & he didn't do too badly thereafter.
Some views from the twitterati:
Ishant: 'Obviously the way the batsmen played in the first innings was tremendous. Rahane was brilliant and that set up the momentum. Cricket is a leveller and I believe in that. Dhoni always keeps motivating us. All these wickets are for the captain as he told me that I am tall enough and to bowl the bouncers. We need to keep attacking once we break a big partnership. We will rest for two days before going to Southampton and once there we will play the way we have been playing.'
Ishant Sharma is the Man of the Match for his brilliant match figures of 7-74 in the second innings, the best by an Indian pacer in England.
Dhoni: 'We did the basics right. Not many players had played here before. It was good to see indiviuals stand up and make themselves counted. It was a crucial toss as there was something in it for the fast bowlers. Credit to the top-order as they left the ball well and did not throw their wickets away. Most of the batsmen are making sure that they get out to good delervies rather than bad ones. Even the bowlers are contributing with the bat. It is important to stay in the game till the last day as it will help our spinners come into the game. In the two games we have played we have been able to do that. Jadeja has to play that sort of innings, the more and more he plays he will become better. He is someone who doubts his talent but has the technique to bat in these conditions. Once it comes to talent aspect we all know how good he is. What was important was, we had 200 runs, the top-order went below 100 but you need to keep pressure on the opposition. There was a big partnership between Moeen and Root, we needed to keep things tight during those time. Ishant was not willing to bowl short in the last over but I persisted him to bowl short. The reason was I wanted Virat to stand back, with those you need to get lucky as you will not be able to gather all of them. With only two fielders allowed behind the square we needed to go with that tactic (when enquired about standing far back).'
Cook: 'It was a tough defeat, that too at Lord's. Credit to India on how they played. The pitch was turning and bouncing in the fourth innings but that is no excuse to the way we played. It was a good toss to win but we didn't make the most of the conditions. We did not make our first innings count, we should have got more runs. Even while they were batting in the second innings, 200 for 7 and Jadeja comes out and takes the game away from us. There are a lot of youungsters in the team, so it will take time to get going as a unit. The older guys are not playing as well as their records suggest. They have to look at themselves, even I should start scoring runs. Matt has been a fantastic player for England. He needs to be prove people wrong with his performances and he is a fighter and you want people like that in the dressing room. All the heat is on me, if I am not good enough at the end of the summer then so be it. I should start scoring runs and lead from the front, I will lead till the management want me to. I was batting well in the second innings, so will go back to the nets and work harder.'
Do stick around fells, for the presensation and quotes from both the captains.
Meanwhile, the chorus for Cook's axing has gotten louder. David Gower was stripped of captaincy in the aftermath of the loss to India at Lord's in 1986. Will history repeat itself? Matt Prior's head is on the chopping block as well. The England squad for the third Test will be out tomorrow.
Ali Cook poked and prodded for 93 balls before Ishant nipped out the English skipper with a beauty from round the wicket. India continued to make inroads into the English middle-order. But Moeen Ali and Root dug their heels in to keep the spirited Indian attack at bay until the last ball of the morning session - an Ishant lifter- which marked the beginning of the end for England. After lunch, it was the Ishant show all the way.
The Tamil Nadu opener, having tightened up his technique, showed assurance in leaving balls outside off. Ironically, he was undone by a teaser close to the off-stump. And just when the game was dangling on a razor's edge, Jadeja turned on his Rockstar mode and mullered the hosts all around Lord's. The spat with Jimmy Anderson did really fire him up as Jaddu in conjuction with Bhuvi set England a daunting 319-run target.
Bhuvi was far from done. He set the ball rolling, snaring a 6-fer by swinging the ball either way even as Garry Ballance essayed a fighting ton to help England nick a slender lead. India's second innings was all about the stonewalling of Murali Vijay and the cavalier counter-punch from Ravindra Jadeja.
There was other heroes as well as India broke their 15 Test win-less streak away from home. Ajinkya Rahane set the tone for the special win with a vintage century on a emerald green pitch, steering India to a serene 295. He found an able ally in Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who scored a steady 36.
The writing on the wall became clear when Root mishit the pull and found Binny at deep square leg. Ishant Sharma seems to have found his zone. He bounced out as many as five English batsmen. Ishant seems ready to slip into Zak's 'bowling captain' shoes. Dhoni's field placements were funky, he himself was standing far back to Jadeja, but it eventually turned out to be effective.
It was Ishant's session at the HQ. Charging in with the mane of a lion, Ishant roared to bounce out the English batsmen. Well, one had to admit that he was marginally helped by England, who came out with a hooking disease after lunch. Ishant caused those short balls to rise but the English basmen played some daft shots, holing out in the deep.
The celebrations have started. Ishant leads the team off the field. It is the first time that an Indian bowler has taken 7 wickets in the 4th innings out of the sub-continent. What an incredible session!
10 wickets down for ENG. Out batsman is James Anderson. It is all over for ENG. 88.2Ravindra Jadeja to James Anderson. out J Anderson Run Out!! India go 1-0 up in the 5-match series. Where was Anderson going? There was never a run. This was tossed up around off, Anderson knocks it to the off-side, he takes off for a single, Plunkett sends him back, Jadeja runs across, gathers the ball and hits the bulls-eye at the striker's end. The third umpire was not needed as Oxenford makes the decision. Anderson dives but he was well short. J Anderson run out (Ravindra Jadeja) 2(6)
India Win!
88.1Ravindra Jadeja to Liam Plunkett. 1 run, presses forward and looks to drive, he gets a thick inside edge towards mid-on
Time for a drinks break. India will certainly need that. It has been all India in the first hour after lunch. Who would have thought England will be nine down at drinks? Not most of us, but some bizarre batting and superb bowling by Ishant sees the match being in such a situation. It is just a matter of time before the visitors register their second win at Lord's

FOUR, poor stuff from Shami, not the kind of start India would have hoped for after lunch. 10 runs came off that over, again short without much pace, Root rocks back and pulls it in front of square, Rahane had just a few meters to cover but he still couldn't get there
Shami goes round the wicket
76.5Mohammed Shami to Joe Root. FOUR, excellent shot! There were two men in the deep for the pull, Root bisects them and picks up a boundary, he did not look in any sort of trouble while playing that

76.2Mohammed Shami to Joe Root. 1 run, short delivery on off, Root has ample time to roll his wrists and pull it along the ground to fine leg
Shami loses his run-up and the ball rolls away towards the batsman. Dharmasena was quick to call it a dead-ball
76.1Mohammed Shami to Joe Root. no run, dug in short and on the stumps, Root expects it to bounce much higher, but it didn't and gets it hit on the glove
Matt Prior, right handed bat, comes to the crease
Shami to resume proceedings. He has no slips but has a FSL, leg gully in place. Expect some short stuff..
Welcome back for the penultimate session of the Test. Moeen Ali's wicket off the final ball of the first session would have surely boosted the morale in the Indian dressing room. With the second new ball available in 4 overs, the visitors will look to get one more wicket before they take it. Can they do that? Or will the England batsmen counter-attack? Answers coming up in a short while...
Second Test at Old Trafford, 1936:
India's first draw away from home. After winning the toss and batting first, India were restricted to 203 on a flat wicket. The hosts showed how good the wicket was when they garnered a mammoth 571 which included 167 from Wally Hammond. England looked to be in the driver's seat with a 368-run lead but the Indian batsmen thought otherwise. The opening pair of Vijay Merchant and Mushtaq Ali scored hundreds and were involved in a 203-run stand which was the highest against England on their home shores. By the time the match came to an end, India led by 22 runs and still had 5 wickets in hand.
It should be a cracking post-lunch session. Don't go anywhere. You wouldn't want to miss a ball of this thrilling Test. Before you go, here is part 3 of our summary on England-India Tests in England. Enjoy and do join us soon.
India tried everything in that opening session but the batsmen resisted whatever that was thrown at them. And when the bowlers erred, they made them pay by getting boundaries. In a desperate bid Ishant was brought on by Dhoni and though his first over went for 14, he struck with the last ball before lunch to give India fresh hope. Still 146 needed and with both Prior and Stokes battling for their places, India look favorites.
The batsmen walk off with their heads down. Ishant and Dhoni have a chat as they go back to have lunch. Moeen Ali and Root did superbly well to negotiate the first session until that last delivery consumed the former. Credit to Ishant for thinking out-of-the-box and coming up with a different plan to outwit Moeen. India certainly needed that wicket for the batsmen were taking the game away from them. The runs were flowing and now the game takes another turn.
End of over 76 ( 1 Runs )ENG 173/5 3 wickets for Ishant Sharma. Ishant Sharma is on a roll. 5 wickets down for ENG. Out batsman is Moeen Ali maiden over bowled by Ishant Sharma 75.6Ishant Sharma to Moeen Ali. out Caught by Pujara at short leg!! Ishant has done it. The short ball ploy has worked. Moeen Ali was looking to duck, took his eyes off the ball and then just thrust his glove in the way - lobbed off the glove to Che. Ishant strikes with the last ball before lunch. The England think-tank is gutted on the balcony and so are the batsmen in the middle. Moeen Ali c Pujara b Ishant 39(147) [4s-5]
Last delivery before lunch

50 runs for Joe Root 73.4Ishant Sharma to Joe Root. FOUR, Root gets to fifty. And look at the celebration. He seems to be pumped up. Waves his bat to all corners of Lord's. The England team are up to applaud that effort. Short outside off, cut wide and to the left of point. No third man still and that will be third boundary of the over. Ishant hasn't begun well and Root has capitalised. Root has a steely look on his face - which suggests trouble for India. He isn't done yet

70.4Ravindra Jadeja to Moeen Ali. no run, did that carry to Kohli at BSL? Need a replay. No! Just short of Kohli. Kohli dived forward and to his right, but the ball didn't carry

Silly point moves even closer to the batsman now
70.2Ravindra Jadeja to Joe Root. no run, defended to silly point
70.1Ravindra Jadeja to Joe Root. no run, gets forward and drives it back to Ravindra Jadeja
Stuart Binny must be wondering what he should do to catch Dhoni's attention. He was seen warming up, but still no sign of him. Hasn't bowled a single over in this innings. Is this his last Test for the moment after yesterday's brain fade with the bat?

That's a wrap of this segment. Meanwhile, the news is that Sourav Ganguly will ring the 5-minute bell today to kick off play.
He adds, 'The southpaw's 68 (57b, 9x4) and his decisive 99-run eighth-wicket partnership off 100 balls with Bhuvneshwar Kumar (52) helped India score 342 in its second innings and set England, a daunting target of 319.'
K.C.Vijaya Kumar, writing for the Hindu, praises Ravindra Jadeja. Vijaya Kumar writes, 'It wasn't exactly the famous Indian mutiny of 1857 but when a young all-rounder from Saurashtra, entertained the Sunday crowd at Lord's, rebellion was written all over it. Ravindra Jadeja stepped into this second Test after James Anderson's alleged push against him at Trent Bridge and the subsequent exchange of charges to the ICC by the respective teams. Shrugging aside those distractions, Jadeja dished out a cavalier knock and India prospered.'
'At stumps, hope and depression were separated by the silent Long Room and Committee Hall that stood between the two dressing rooms. England finished the day at 105/4, still 214 runs short of the winning target of 319 with six wickets intact.'
He writes, 'The lights were on but no one seemed to be home. Below the dazzling floodlights that shone brightly in the cloudy evening sky, the final moments of play were witnessed by a silent and sombre Lord's. With every English wicket, the mood became graver, and when Ishant Sharma had Alastair Cook caught behind, the final wicket to fall on Day 4, Lord's went pensive and also half-empty.'
Sandeep Dwivedi's report for the Indian Express carries the headline: 'Firmly in driver's seat'
The analyst adds, 'When batting, Cook stabbed and poked determinedly but he never really looked convincing. Finally Sharma went round the wicket and drew him into a fatal prod. Stamina-wise, Cook is the fittest man in the England team. But his weary plod off the field betrayed a man who was mentally spent. On a difficult last day suffice his fate is with the weather gods now.'
'Lunch was taken, the cue perhaps for a change of tactics. But England, and Cook's biggest flaw, is that they appear to play by pre-arranged formula.'
'Ravindra Jadeja, mindful of Ali trapping him lbw for just three in the first innings, had charged the off-spinner and skewed the ball luckily just out of reach of Liam Plunkett running back at cover. The score, if that ball had gone to hand, would have been 212 for seven, the Indian lead just 188. An English victory was attainable. Eight balls later Cook claimed the second new ball. It produced an immediate result the wicket of Murali Vijay but pace was definitely to Jadeja and Bhuvneshwar Kumar's liking.'
Simon Hughes, writing for the Telegraph UK, lashes out at Cook's insipid tactics. Hughes writes, 'Just after midday on Sunday, the Indian second innings, the match and, probably, Alastair Cook's destiny, were in a precarious state. Stuart Binny had just unwisely attempted to club Moeen Ali into the pavilion and Cook had pouched an excellent running, diving catch.'
The former England skipper adds, 'Sometimes you have to look at what went before you and the way the opposition had success and adapt accordingly. This just isn't the pitch to gut it out because there is always a ball with your name on it. Look at the way Kumar and Jadeja played with almost a one-day mindset. There was nothing reckless but they were positive and took the game to England.'
He writes, 'If things don't go well for England at Lord's and they lose this Test match there can be no excuses. Everything they asked for beforehand, they got. England have little chance of winning unless they completely change the mindset they showed when they batted on Sunday.'
Nasser Hussain, writing for the Daily Mail believes that 'England's only hope is to attack'
'Then Dhoni recalled Ishant Sharma from the Pavilion End. Cook prodded forward, that tentative prod, which has been so much in evidence recently, and Dhoni, a relaxed and single-minded puppeteer behind the stumps, took the catch.'
'How Cook battled for that 22 in his longest innings since the Perth Test in December. He barely timed a ball. Having missed his first delivery from Mohammed Shami he was served a long-hop and he patted it away down the slope for four with no great conviction. Much later there would be a more impressive back-foot drive to the mid-off boundary against Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Otherwise scrambled singles were his mode of progress.'
Marks writes, 'Alastair Cook is not the first England captain to find himself needing runs to stay in the job. In fact it happens to most of them along the way. The inhabitants of the Sky commentary box whether Ian Botham, Mike Atherton, Nasser Hussain or Andrew Strauss could confirm that. It is an occupational hazard.'
Vic Marks' piece for the Guardian wears the headline: 'England captain Alastair Cook's weary 22 may test even the ECB's loyalty'
Greetings and welcome to the final day of the second Test at Lord's. Before the action blasts off, let us have a gander at what the newspapers have in store for us.
Joe Root and Moeen Ali have both the technique and the temperament to keep any attack at bay. Matt Prior and Ben Stokes though will have to shed their shoddy form and rise to the occasion. With the cracks expected to open up further, we will see more of the Rockstar - Ravindra Jadeja - today. Alright, fasten your seat belts for a riveting climax.
India are in command at Lord's. Fifteen away Tests and 1124 days have swept by since their last win in Jamaica in 2011. Can India take the gorilla off their back and close out this Test and with it seal their second win at the HQ? Or will England summon vast reserves of concentration to foil India's plans? All to play for here!
1936: England won the 3-match series 2-0
First Test at Lord's: A low-scoring game which saw India take the first innings lead but still go onto lose the match. Vijay Merchant and captain Dattaram Hindlekar provided a solid start as the pair added 62 runs but the lower and middle-order failed to capitalize and were bowled out for 147. Amar Singh and Mohammad Nissar bowled admirably to restrict the hosts to 134, the duo shared 9 wickets between them. However, Sir Gubby Allen scalped his 2nd 5-wicket haul of the game and bowled India out cheaply for 93. England made light work of the target as Gimblett scored a quick-fire 67.
Here is part 2 of our special feature on India-England Tests in England. Feast on it.
'Cricket is different from other sports. The following has increased in with T20s and leagues like the Indian T20 League. I think the Top Associates will challenge the Full members. It will only be a matter of time. We also have a Test fund to improve Tests. The best team must win. It has been a absorbing game so far. We have got together to get the game forward so that money is distributed in an equaitable fashion. Equal importance will be given to the Associates and the Affiliates. The game will go on, it does not depend on any individual. All of us help it along its way in our tenure.'
N Srinivasan: 'As I have said earlier, the most important thing is that cricket is competitive. We have to ensure financial stability and bring about transparency in the functioning of the ICC itself. The Associate members will get a greater share than before. Earlier, they got only a net amount. I think the total interest in cricket has increased. In some geographies, people do not come and attend the game. They watch the game but do not come down to the grounds to watch it. The three formats have been successful but no equally successful. In some countries like India, UK and Australia, all three have been very successful. The way the game is poised today, Test cricket is unique. Under the new dispensation, every nation has FTP. The World Cup is returning to Australia and New Zealand after a long time. It will be competitive and compelling. India will play against all other Full Members. There is enough room for T20s as well for the FTP.
India? Or England? I will let you be the judge. Whatever happens, a cracking final day awaits us. It is just unmissable. Do join us back tomorrow. Before we sign off, help yourself to part 2 of our special feature that throws a spotlight on India-England Tests in England. Also, we have ICC Chairman, N.Srinivasan's interview transcribed for you.
India are closing in on a historic triumph at the HQ. England are still 214 runs in arrears. Only once has a side chased more than 319 at this venue. Root and Ali though will remind India of their blockathon at Leeds against Sri Lanka, where the hosts dragged the game till the penultimate ball of the final day after England lost half their side on Day 4. The duo will be looking to go one better and crash India's party.
Cook and Ballance put their heads down and grafted hard until the latter was caught behind off Shami. Cook's cautious vigil ended soon with Ishant Sharma consuming the English skipper with a teaser from round the wicket. Ishant, who galloped in and bowled with verve, stuck again to shoot through Bell's defences. Another notable feature in the session was the Dhoni-Jadeja combine. Interestingly, Dhoni stood far back to his spinner for a major chunk of the session in a bid to counter the irregular bounce and prevent the leakage of runs. Dhoni was also more pro-active as a captain, lusting for the jugular, rather than playing the waiting game.
Stumps, Day 4: Test cricket, you beauty! Another enthralling day has come to a close. If the game was in the balance until yesterday, India have marched ahead of the hosts today. After the counter-attacking 99-run stand between Jaddu and Bhuvi, India made inroads into the English middle-order.

Hello again for the final session. The second session belonged to Jadeja, who nipped out Robson after a swashbuckling fifty that lead India's counter-attack.
1932: England won the one-off Test 1-0
This Test saw many firsts. None more significant than India playing its first game in Test cricket that too at Lord's. The visitors got off to a tremendous start as they had England reeling at 19/3, the hosts' skipper, Jardine played a patient knock of 79 and bailed his team out of trouble. Mohammad Nissar was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up a 5-fer in India's first Test. The batsmen started off well but lost their last 7 wickets for 79 and were skittled out for 189, handing a 70-run lead to the hosts. England built on the lead and set a target of 346, which was too much for an inexperienced batting line-up. Only Amar Singh showed some resilience with a stubborn 51 as India were bundled out for 187.
Sip on your tea with another special feature, this one portraying the summary of all India-England Tests in England. Here is part one for you. Hope you enjoyed the one on the most memorable performances early on.
It's been India's session again, a wicket of Robson after Jadeja and Bhuvneshwar ensured a lead of 318. There was some variable bounce but England batsmen didn't look confident from the outset. They've had problems dealing with deliveries outside the off stump, especially Cook. Do join us in a short while for the final session...
