India won by 95 runs | India Vs England 2nd Test match

Third Test at The Oval, 1936
India avoided the follow-on but could not prevent a huge loss. Wally Hammond smashed 217 and was involved in a 266-run stand for the 4th wicket with Worthington who scored 128. The hosts asked India to follow-on as the visitors trailed by 249 runs after being bowled out for 222. India started their second innings strongly but all the hard work was undone by a superb spell of 7/80 by Sir Gubby Allen, which was his career best figures. Needing 64 runs to win, England achieved it in 13 overs.
Before we sign off, help yourself to part 4 of our summary of India-England Tests in England. Take care and cheerio!
Congratulations to India for sculpting a famous win. They go 1-0 up in the 5-match Test series. It will take a great deal of character from the hosts to comeback and restore parity. Do Cook and his men have it in them to pick themselves up and dust themselves off? Or will India ride on the momentum? It was a great pleasure bringing you the thrills and spills of this Test. Cheers for your warm company. Do join us back for the third Test, which starts on July 27 at The Rose Bowl.
Meanwhile, England continue to be haunted by the old demons. They lack the killer instinct to grab the game by the scruff of its neck, they seem content to wait for things to happen. Their captain looks mentally shot. So does their wicket-keeper. Bell's batting has also been thrown out of gear. England's core is disintegrating.
India finally exorcise the demons of Dominica (2011), Johannesburg (2013) and Wellington (2014). Rahane's ton, Bhuvi's all-round heroics, Vijay's solidity, Jadeja's uninhibited counter-attack, Ishant's killer spell all plunge into history as India break their pesky 15 Test win-less streak away from home. This was also India's second only Test triumph at Lord's, 28 years after Kapil Dev's boys achieved the feat.
Alec Stewart: Congratulations to India. You've thoroughly deserved your fantastic win at Lords. You've outplayed England on a very English pitch. #EngvInd
Kevin Pietersen: Don't blame me...blame the ghosts!
Lawrence Booth: Utterly dismal from England since lunch - and, of course, the man who runs out Anderson is Jadeja. Well played India!
Jonathan Agnew: India deserve to win this match. Outplayed England in their own conditions. But last half hour has been lamentable
Ian Botham: Enough is enough we have to change things & move on simply not good enough (same as my school reports ) Captain cannot go on he's scrambled!
Harsha Bhogle: this ishant spell will become part of folklore..
Mohandas Menon: Ishant Sharma's 7/74 is the 5th best by any visiting bowler at Lord's after G McGrath 8/38, B Massie 8/53 & 8/84 and S Pegler 7/65#EngvInd
Brian Murgatroyd: I hope this is a new beginning for Ishant. Remember, Bob Willis took 7 years to get 100 Test wkts & he didn't do too badly thereafter.
Some views from the twitterati:
Ishant: 'Obviously the way the batsmen played in the first innings was tremendous. Rahane was brilliant and that set up the momentum. Cricket is a leveller and I believe in that. Dhoni always keeps motivating us. All these wickets are for the captain as he told me that I am tall enough and to bowl the bouncers. We need to keep attacking once we break a big partnership. We will rest for two days before going to Southampton and once there we will play the way we have been playing.'
Ishant Sharma is the Man of the Match for his brilliant match figures of 7-74 in the second innings, the best by an Indian pacer in England.
Dhoni: 'We did the basics right. Not many players had played here before. It was good to see indiviuals stand up and make themselves counted. It was a crucial toss as there was something in it for the fast bowlers. Credit to the top-order as they left the ball well and did not throw their wickets away. Most of the batsmen are making sure that they get out to good delervies rather than bad ones. Even the bowlers are contributing with the bat. It is important to stay in the game till the last day as it will help our spinners come into the game. In the two games we have played we have been able to do that. Jadeja has to play that sort of innings, the more and more he plays he will become better. He is someone who doubts his talent but has the technique to bat in these conditions. Once it comes to talent aspect we all know how good he is. What was important was, we had 200 runs, the top-order went below 100 but you need to keep pressure on the opposition. There was a big partnership between Moeen and Root, we needed to keep things tight during those time. Ishant was not willing to bowl short in the last over but I persisted him to bowl short. The reason was I wanted Virat to stand back, with those you need to get lucky as you will not be able to gather all of them. With only two fielders allowed behind the square we needed to go with that tactic (when enquired about standing far back).'
Cook: 'It was a tough defeat, that too at Lord's. Credit to India on how they played. The pitch was turning and bouncing in the fourth innings but that is no excuse to the way we played. It was a good toss to win but we didn't make the most of the conditions. We did not make our first innings count, we should have got more runs. Even while they were batting in the second innings, 200 for 7 and Jadeja comes out and takes the game away from us. There are a lot of youungsters in the team, so it will take time to get going as a unit. The older guys are not playing as well as their records suggest. They have to look at themselves, even I should start scoring runs. Matt has been a fantastic player for England. He needs to be prove people wrong with his performances and he is a fighter and you want people like that in the dressing room. All the heat is on me, if I am not good enough at the end of the summer then so be it. I should start scoring runs and lead from the front, I will lead till the management want me to. I was batting well in the second innings, so will go back to the nets and work harder.'
Do stick around fells, for the presensation and quotes from both the captains.
