    • 1967: England won the 3-match series 3-0

    • First Test at Headingley

    • Geoff Boycott welcomed the Indians with a typical Boycott innings, 246 off 555 balls. That remained as his highest score in Tests. England declared their innings at 550 which also included a hundred from Basil D'Oliveira. Indian batsmen showed no application in the first innings as only 3 batsmen got to double figures but came out positively in the second innings, with their skipper, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi leading the way with a solid 148. They went past the English score and took a lead of 125 runs, the bowlers tried their best but had very few runs to play with. In the end, England won by 6 wickets.

    • Before we sign off, treat yourself to part 17 of our detailing of India-England Tests in England.

    • Piers Morgan: Brilliant, massively improved performance by England. Congratulations to the whole team.

    • Andy Zaltzman: Moeen the first bowler to take 6 wickets in the 4th inns v India since Lance Klusener's 8-64 on debut in Nov 1996.

    • Alan Wilkins: Trouncing for India in the 3rd Test. England have found their spinner, India will have a long selection session for the 4th Test.

    • Tom Moody: Quality comeback from @ECB_cricket, India have some thinking to do, surely @ashwinravi99 can't sit on the bench for another test.

    • Alec Stewart: Congratulations to Alastair Cook & England. A fine performance from the 1st ball to the last. More of the same at OT please. Well played.

    • Shane Warne: Well done England, the senior players stood up this test match & levelled the series. Shaping up to be a good series. See u in Manchester !

    • Mohandas Menon: Moeen Ali (27y-43d) youngest England spinner to claim a five wkt haul since Monty Panesar (26y-30d) 6/37 v NZ at Old Trafford 2008

    • Some views from the twitterati:

    • The unavailability of Ishant has further twisted a knife into India's wounds. Will Dhoni dispense with the extra batsman and bring in Binny or Ashwin? Will Gambhir get a go ahead of the under-performing Dhawan at Manchester? Dhoni has six days to scratch his brains out and figure out the solution. Expecting your warm company for the fourth Test, starting on August 7 at Old Trafford.

    • All in all, it was just about the perfect Test for England but the touring party was brought crashing down to earth following the heroics at Lord's. The law of averages appears to be catching up with Vijay, Rohit is still a cat on a hot tinned roof against the moving ball and so is Dhawan. To make matters worse, the relentless accuracy from Jimmy and Co. has exposed Kohli's vulnerability close to the off-stump. The 'new wall' in Che Pujara has also come crumbling down.

    • Jimmy had bowled 111 overs at the HQ and TB but steamed in with verve and purpose, swinging the ball either way. As he mentioned at the presentaion, Broad backed him up ably. Chris Woakes was impressive as well but there are a few question marks over the erratic Chris Jordan. In all likelihood, the strapping Plunkett will be back for the Old Trafford Test to lend more oomph to the attack.

    • India's effort in the second essay was even more abysmal with only Rahane waging a lone war, dragging the match close to the fifth afternoon. Their batsmen, bereft of application, had no answer to Jimmy Anderson and even more glaring was their struggle against Moeen Ali. He may not be a Swann but he showcased a great deal of discipline, exploiting the rough outside off.

    • India's first innings was a case of failed starts. Eight of the Indian batsmen ventured into double figures but only Rahane and Dhoni reached fifties. The extra batsman in Rohit failed miserably, picking out mid-off with an irresponsible loft when caution was the need of the hour. England though did not impose the follow-on, they began on a solid note before cranking up to top gear, setting India an improbable target of 445.

    • Anderson: 'Yes, it was a good day for us yesterday. We played brilliantly the whole game. We won all the sessions. Gary and Bell batted fantastically well. We also bowled brilliantly and Moeen today was outstanding. I think we definitely enjoyed this week. Broady and me set the tone with the new ball. The ball swung both innings and made my job easier. We will have to wait and see what happens tomorrow. I am not sure (when asked about the hearing tomorrow). But I think we have done brilliantly to put it out of our mind and concentrate on cricket.'

    • James Anderson is the Man of the Match for his match haul of 7 wickets, including his 5-fer in the first innings.

    • Cook: 'I am relieved. Happy is a better word. We have pretty much won every session. Things went our way. Every single one contributed to the win. 570 was a great start, we got quick runs in the second innings and knocked them over. Walking out for lunch on Sunday was fantastic. I have had a fantastic week. I thought at Lord's my game was heading back in the right direction. I was frustrated not to get a 100 in the first innings but I will take 160 runs in the game. I have nicked off quite a lot. I did move my feet. We had to work incredibly hard for the win. Moeen's bowling has come leaps and bounds. He has worked really hard. He is responding well. On a spinning wicket, he gets 6 to win us the game. Buttler is a great keeper. He had a brilliant debut. You can't ask for anymore from him. Anderson keeps telling me that a bowler must be choosing the man of the match award, for he keeps winning them but he bowled brilliantly. He set the tone in the first half an hour along with Broad.'

    • Dhoni: 'I don't think we played good cricket here. But, we played the fast bowlers well. Moeen bowled good lines but we let him bowl well. We have to play him a bit more positively. The phase where Jinks got out and a couple of other wickets that fell had a big impact on the game. Those were soft dismissals. The reason why we wanted an extra batsman was we never really used the fifth bowler in the first two Tests. He just bowled 10 or 8 overs. We still had Shikhar, Vijay to fill in. We will have to be patient and hit the fourth stump mark consistently. We will have to revisit the four bowler strategy going into the next Test. Whatever is the best, we will have to go with it. As of now, Ishant will not be available for the fourth Test. Personally, Pankaj bowled good lengths. He was unlucky not to get wickets. Whenever I gave him the ball, he bowled his heart out. When it comes to the talent part, we can bounce back. It's just the mental thing. We will have to be more positive.'

    • Presentation time:

    • There was some speculation of Buttler not being ready for Tests but he quashed all doubts, bashing 85 to propel England to 569. Claiming 6 dismissals behind the stumps, he showed agile reflexes. Pankaj Singh was the lone bright spot in the Indian bowling although the last column in his maiden Test was empty, much like his ODI debut.

    • Could this mark the beginning of England's renaissance? The hosts had their share of luck but never looked back since Jaddu dropped their captain on 15. Breaking his barren patch, Cook bounced back into form, scoring twin fifties. His captaincy was sound as well - eventually his decision to bat first on a pitch that had a green tinge to it proved fruitful. Bell also came into his own, making a typically pristine 167 while Ballance's prolific summer continued.

    • Having won every session in this Test, England have romped to a mammoth win to get on an even keel in the series. This is also England's first Test success in 11 Tests. When England won their last Test at Chester-le-Street, KP was very much a central part of their plans, Sachin Tendulkar was still playing Test cricket and David Moyes was settling into his role as Manchester United's manager.

    • England's new frontline spinner - Moeen Ali - leads the hosts off the field. Hasn't he been a revelation? Jimmy Anderson sports a big smile on his face and so does Ali Cook. The Ageas Bowl belts out its applause for England. The camera pans out to Peter Moores, who looks quite pleased as well.

    • 10 wickets down for IND. Out batsman is Pankaj Singh. It is all over for IND. 66.4Moeen Ali to Pankaj Singh. out Bowled!! 6-fer for Moeen Ali. England win by a resounding 266 runs to level the series. This is England's first Test triumph after 354 days. • 65.2Chris Woakes to Pankaj Singh. no run, Buttler goes up for a caught behind appeal. He flings the ball in the air. The umpire nips the appeal in the bud. This was dug in short outside off, Pankaj Singh gets into a tangle and fends at it awkwardly, while taking the eyes off the ball. Lucky, he did not glove that. The deflection emanated from the bat kissing the pad

    • 65.1Chris Woakes to Pankaj Singh. no run, pitched up and on off, Pankaj Singh jerks it to covers with laden feet, looks for a non-existent single, Rahane sends him back

    • End of over 65 ( 8 Runs )IND 165/9 64.6Moeen Ali to Ajinkya Rahane. FOUR, similar ball, pushed through, Rahane takes the aerial route and slogs it away over mid-wicket. Pankaj is exposed now

He has a huge smile on his face and pumps his fist. Shami didn't have a clue about that - trying to defend off the back foot and lost his leg stump, to a ball that turned in sharply. The abject surrender continues. Shami b Moeen Ali 0(4)

    • 61.5Chris Woakes to Ajinkya Rahane. 1 run, tucks it off his hips to mid-wicket, settles for the single, even though he could've come back for the second

    • Jadeja was looking at the rough after he got out - that's where that ball pitched. But the rough didn't have anything to do with his dismissal. He nearly yorked himself and played all around a full delivery.

    • End of over 48 ( 4 Runs )IND 120/6 47.6James Anderson to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, unplayable! Just simply too good for Ravindra Jadeja. Pitches around off and then rears up on him like a spitting cobra. The extra bounce forced the ball to miss the outside edge, Jadeja didn't have a clue who tried to fence at it. Lovely over from Anderson comes to an end

    • 47.5James Anderson to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, now he brings the inswinger into play, only an inside edge onto the pads saved Ravindra Jadeja, for he was very late on the back foot defensive shot

    • 47.3James Anderson to Ravindra Jadeja. no run, back and across before defending to gully

    • Ravindra Jadeja, left handed bat, comes to the crease

    • 47.2James Anderson to MS Dhoni. out Caught by Buttler!! Now Dhoni goes. What a bowler this Anderson is. Pumps his fist vigorously to send Dhoni back. For the nth time, Dhoni cannot handle a delivery in the corridor of uncertainty, he just pushes forward to defend, doesn't cover the line properly and a healthy edge behind where Buttler dives to take a good catch. The wheels are coming off now. Dhoni c Buttler b J Anderson 6(11) [4s-1]

    • 47.1James Anderson to MS Dhoni. FOUR, well played by Dhoni, he just opened the face and guided it wide of a diving gully. Still no third man and that will be the first boundary of the day

    • 45.4James Anderson to MS Dhoni. 2 runs, unnecessary throw from Bell at cover, Rahane was well in and the backing up fielder can't stop it cleanly. They take an extra run

    • 5 wickets down for IND. Out batsman is Rohit Sharma 43.3James Anderson to Rohit Sharma. out Caught by Buttler!! Gone! Anderson is leaping around in delight. Rohit stands there - was he unhappy at himself or with the decision? Real Time Snicko picks up a slight deflection. So that should settle any doubt. Could've left that outside off offering alone, but he just pushed at it limply and a thin feather through to Buttler. India lose a wicket very early on, on day 5. The end might be nigh here! • We are all set for the final day of this match. A fascinating finale awaits us. The players are trooping into the field of play. Conditions perfect as has been the case throughout this Test. Rahane and Rohit have a huge task on their hands. A chance for them to become heroes. Will they rise to the occasion? Or will England run through with the match? All your questions will be answered in a short while...

    • Weather update: 0% chance of rain today. Bright and sunny all day.

    • Pitch report: 'Oatmeal biscuit brown' is the term used to describe the pitch by Alan Wilkins. He reckons it will be very difficult for India. 'For India, the blue sky means it will be a dark day and crumbs' that's how Wilko signs off. Not good news if you are an Indian fan.

    • 'Now, they need 333 for a win and if they can negotiate 90 overs the game can still be drawn.'

    • He writes, 'Casual calculations showed that each batsmen would need to score 40 runs for an incredible win or play 72 balls to pull off an unbelievable draw. Very early it was clear that Dhawan wasn't told to do a Virender Sehwag and this wasn't going to be a repeat of Chennai 08 where India chased down 387. This was Southampton and 445 seemed just as far as Chepauk from here. In the space of 8 balls, forget the target, even the time for stumps on Thursday seemed light years away. Things would go from bad to worse 26/0 would change to 29/2. As batsmen, after surviving Anderson and Stuart Broad with the new ball, kept succumbing to the off-spin of Moeen Ali or Joe Root, India found themselves in a hole at 112/4.'

    • Sandeep Dwivedi's report for The Indian Express carries the headline: 'Empire all but strikes back'

    • 'The third Test's fourth day was entirely about England's bid to multiply its advantage. Still, ever the classical opener, there were no ugly shots from Cook. He swept Ravindra Jadeja to reach his fifty and kept mumbling 'push, push' as he charged for his singles. Cook's unbeaten 70 proved to be the pivot around which the others like Joe Root (56) prospered. England declared its second innings at 205 for four once Root fell and immediately tea was advanced. India was staring at a world-record chase of 445 spread over four sessions, a daunting task ahead of M.S.Dhoni's men.' writes K.C. Vijaya Kumar for The Hindu

    • 'England batted at the right tempo in their second innings. You do not tee off from ball one in a Test match. You have to play yourself in. And the declaration was absolutely spot on too. I would have done it no sooner nor later. Then England showed considerable energy in the field after four long, hot days. For your opening bowler to be able to run in from square leg and pull off a run-out from a direct hit was outstanding, as was the sight of another fast bowler in Jordan taking such a sharp diving catch at slip. There are some real pluses coming out of this game. Moeen Ali's bowling is getting better and Jos Buttler's wicketkeeping has been excellent.'

    • Nasser Hussain, writing for the Daily Mail, opines that 'England have played close to the perfect Test'. The ex-England skipper carries on, 'This has been close to the perfect Test for England. You cannot complain about anything they have done from the start until the end of the fourth day. It was absolutely fitting that Jimmy Anderson should end up with a five-wicket haul on his 32nd birthday and England's bowlers have been very clever in the way they have used the short ball in this game.'

    • The Analyst adds, 'They frequently do. It suggests a fair amount of tension in his body and that is not ideal for an opening batsman who has 0.4 sec to react to an 85mph ball.'

    • Simon Hughes, writing for the Telegraph UK questions Sam Robson's technique. He writes, 'This England side is certainly not great, though it is improving and the opening pair is a problem. Cook and Sam Robson have had one fifty opening partnership in nine attempts and, after Robson's dismissal for 13 on Wednesday, their partnership currently averages 29.7 runs per innings. Robson is rigid. He is a touch static, too, and although equipped with some pleasant shots through square-leg and cover, tends to defend hard at the ball. He pushes at it firmly, and his edges are more likely to carry to the slips.'

    • He adds, 'He was dicing with being on the receiving end of more bad press by choosing not to impose the follow-on, but England were positive in the way they batted in their second innings. Cook is rightly gaining more confidence in Moeen Ali and that was shown by how early he used the off-spinner.'

    • Agnew writes, 'For so long this summer we have been asking England to take advantage of the good positions they have found themselves in. Now, after four days of this third Test against India in Southampton, the home side are in the best of the lot. It would be a sweet victory for Alastair Cook, who, after taking a lot of criticism, has had an excellent match, both as a batsman and as a captain.'

    • Jonathan Agnew's piece for BBC wears the headline: 'England close to long-awaited win'

    • Hello and welcome to the final day of the third Test at the Ageas Bowl. As is the norm, let us flick through the newspapers before the action takes off.

    • Back in 2007 at Lord's, when England needed 7 wickets to win the Test on Day 5, MS Dhoni fought tooth and nail scoring an unbeaten 76 before the rain came down to save India. There's no rain predicted today but can India play out 540 balls to stave off defeat and protect their 1-0 lead? England, on the other hand, need 6 more wickets to complete the formalities and square the series.

    • The Mumbai pair of Rohit and Rahane saw through the day but a herculean task awaits India today. Jimmy and Broad will be refreshed and raring to go after a good night's rest.

    • England continued to dominate India, charging towards their first success in 11 Tests. Set 445 - 27 more than any team has chased successfully - the visitors stumbled to 112-4 at stumps on the penultimate day. India did well to blunt the new ball but Moeen Ali, exploiting the rough efficiently, ran a dagger through India's batting. Joe Root also joined in the act. Three out of India's top four were victims of Moeen and Joe Root, while the fourth was run out.

    • 1959: England won the 5-match series 5-0

    • Fifth Test at The Oval

    • India did not do much good to their chances to avoid the whitewash when they were all-out for 140 in the first innings. Fred Trueman who had become a thorn for the Indian batsmen scalped 4 wickets. Then 90s from Raman Subba Row and Mike Smith helped England take a lead of 221 runs. In the second essay, India could only manage 194 and it would have been worse had it not been for Bapu Nadkarni's 76.

    • Just when Kohli and Dhawan were helping India recoup, both fell as India sunk to 89-4. Believe it or not, the Indians were uncomfortable against Ali. Root also helped himself to a wicket. India's battle for survival has only gottten stiffer. Do they have it in them to stonewall Jimmy and Co. for 90 overs? Or will England romp to a big win? Do join us back for the climax tomorrow. Before we sign off, treat yourself to part 16 of our description of India-England Tests in England.

    • Day 4, Stumps: England, having won all the 12 sessions in this Test match, are marching towards a series levelling victory. A combination of good bowling and poor application has left India 333 runs behind with only 6 wickets in the shed. India's sorry second innings started with Vijay falling run-out to an ill-judged single. Pujara followed suit soon after, edging Moeen Ali to first slip.

    • Jimmy Anderson fires a verbal volley at Rahane after taking his cap from the ump. Rahane does not look pleased. Ump Tucker intervenes and diffuses the tension. Then, Rohit puts his arm around Rahane's shoulder and calms him down. That brings us to the close of an intense Day 4.

    • End of over 42 ( 5 Runs )IND 112/4 41.6James Anderson to Ajinkya Rahane. 3 runs, fullish and outside off, Rahane drives it sweetly to the left of the bowler for three runs. The ball plugs in the deep and is hauled back in before the fence
