Delhi Capitals (DC) edged out Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a last-over thriller and made it to the Qualifier 2 after beating Kane Williamson-led unit by two wickets in the Eliminator of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.
DC will now take on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Qualifier 2 and the winner of that game will then take on Mumbai Indians in the final.
Chasing 163, DC were off to a flying start as Prithvi Shaw cut loose. While Shilhar Dhawan set the tone, hitting two fours in the first over of the chase, it was the right-hander, who took on the SRH attack, especially their most experienced bowler, Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Shaw hit the Indian pacer for 17 runs in the fifth over as DC ended up scoring 55 runs in the powerplay.
However, Deepak Hooda struck in the eighth over and broke the opening partnership after Dhawan was out stumped. Shaw, meanwhile, brought up his fifty as DC moved to 83/1 after 10 overs. (IPL 2019, DC vs SRH: AS IT HAPPENED)
SRH then fought back, courtesy Khaleel Ahmed and Rashid Khan. The left-arm pacer struck twice in an over as he sent Shreyas Iyer and Shaw packing in the 11thover. While the DC skipper was caught by Saha, Shaw could not read the slower one and gave an easy catch to Vijay Shankar at point.
While Rishabh Pant and Colin Munro, who replaced Colin Ingram in the playing XI, hit a couple of big blows, Rashid pegged back DC with a two-wicket over. The leg-spinner, bowling his final over of the night, removed Munro and Axar Patel in the 15th over to tilt the game in SRH’s favour.
However, Pant took apart Basil Thampi in the 17th over as DC scored 22 runs, with Pant hitting 2 fours and 2 sixes to bring down the target to 12 from 12 balls. But in his attempt to play a glory shot, after racing to 49 from 20 balls, the left-hander perished in the 19th over as SRH pushed the match into the final over, with DC needing 5 runs to secure a win.
While DC almost lost the plot as Amit Mishra was given out obstructing the field, Keemo Paul hit a four as DC sealed their place in Qualifier 2.
Earlier, after DC elected to bowl, Paul and Ishant Sharma shared five wickets between themselves and helped the team to restrict SRH to 162/8.
There was a drama straightway as Wriddhiman Saha survived an LBW call on the first delivery of the match, courtesy DRS. While Saha could not make most of the same and was dismissed by Ishant Sharma for eight, Martin Guptill was off to a flying start as SRH scored 54 runs in the powerplay, with the New Zealand batsman scoring 35 of them in 17 balls, with the help of 4 sixes and a four.
However, Amit Mishra struck in the first over after powerplay to end Guptill’s blitz and gave DC their second breakthrough as Paul took a tumbling catch in the deep. With Guptill’s wicket, DC pulled back the things as SRH could only score 17 runs in the four overs after powerplay.
While the duo of Kane Williamson and Manish Pandey added 34 runs together, they failed to score at brisk pace and the Indian batsman eventually perished for 30, going for a big shot as Paul scalped his first wicket of the night.
SRH, meanwhile, brought up their hundred in the 15th over. However, Ishant, who returned to attack to bowl his final over, struck for the second time of the night as he disturbed the timber to end Williamson’s stay in the middle.
However, with Mohammad Nabi’s arrival in the middle, SRH managed to up the pace as the Afghanistan allrounder and Vijay added 36 runs off 16 balls before the Indian allrounder got out after scoring a brisk 25 off 11 balls, hitting 2 fours and as many sixes. Nabi, meanwhile, got out in the final over after scoring 20 off 13 balls as SRH, despite Guptill’s bright start and Nabi-Vijay’s quickfire knocks, were restricted to 162/8.
Brief scores: Delhi Capitals 165/8 (Prithvi Shaw 56, Rishabh Pant 49; Rashid Khan 2/15, Khaleel Ahmed 2/24) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 162/8 (Martin Guptill 36, Manish Pandey 30; Keemo Paul 3/32, Ishant Sharma 2/34) by two wickets

Delhi Capitals beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 2 wickets | Delhi Capitals Vs Sunrisers Hyderabad Eliminator match

Hyderabad have been eliminated! Delhi win their first ever knockout game in the Indian T20 League. Can they now make it to their first ever final? For that, they have to cross a hurdle called Chennai. Join us on Friday, May 10, 2019 at 7.30 pm local (1400 GMT) for all the action from Qualifier 2. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
RISHABH PANT HAS BEEN NAMED THE MAN OF THE MATCH. On his knock, Pant says that on this type of wicket, if one gets set, he has to stay till the end. Admits that he got it very close but could not quite finish it off. Promises to do it the next time. On his mental state under pressure, Rishabh says that he always tries to be positive else it could start playing on your mind. On him attacking Bhuvneshwar Kumar, RP says that one plays the same set of bowlers almost everyday. Adds that he just looks to attack the ball, not the bowlers. Stresses that he did not look to hit the ball hard, just focussed on timing it.
Victorious Delhi skipper, Shreyas Iyer, is all smiles. On the last over, Iyer says that he cannot tell what he had in his mind nor can he comment on his expressions. Now, he gathers himself and says that it is an amazing feeling to have qualified for Qualifier 2. Praises his unit for expressing themselves and states that they are not fearing anyone and are ready to take on Chennai on Friday. On Delhi's bowling this evening, Iyer praises his bowlers for coming back strongly after Guptill's start and then Amit Mishra for choking Hyderabad in the middle overs. On Pant and Shaw, Shreyas feels that they are those type of batsmen who should not be told anything as they are better when they go in their own flow, as was evident in this game.
Prithvi Shaw now comes across for a chat. Says he dedicates this knock to his team as they backed him. Adds that he wasn't scoring a lot but they believed in him and he came good. Adds that the support staff helped him a lot and he also believed in himself, playing his natural game. Further admits that he is always nervous. On Rishabh Pant, he says that the keeper-batsman batted beautifully is always there when he is needed. On the planning for Friday, Prithvi says that they are going to enjoy the night as they have not planned on how they are going to go about in the next game.
Hyderabad skipper, Kane Williamson, says they fought really hard to get to where they did as they did not feel the wicket was very good. They felt they would be back in the game after the Powerplay and that is what happened. Admits that it is frustrating but credits the way Delhi played. Feels that 162 was a winning total but Delhi started the Powerplay well. Praises the way his bowlers brought the team back in, though he then credits Delhi to get over the line. Agrees that Warner and Bairstow were brilliant while they were here but the unit believed in itself. Adds that they did put up some strong performances towards the end but were struggling to get over the line.
A factor which has been the reason why Hyderabad were not consistent at all this season. Their bowling. Their most reliable bowler, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, was not at his best at all and struggled even tonight. Rashid not being able to take wickets was a concern and tonight, even though he showed his class, there was not much support from the other end. Khaleel bowled his heart out and if he had bowled the 17th, things might have been different.
With 34 needed from 18 balls, it seemed like Hyderabad's game to lose. And they perhaps lost it there, due to Kane Williamson's captaincy. He has better idea than all of us here but with Khaleel having 2 overs left, Willy went for Basil Thampi. Pant thumped Thampi for 22 runs in the 18th over and it is really fitting that Delhi won from there, in spite of choking at the end.
162 was a good total on a slow track but Dhawan and Saha's 66-run opening stand put Hyderabad on the back foot. But once the Powerplay was over, the slower bowlers came into play. The Orange team started running through the Delhi middle order and it was all upto Rishabh Pant.
Phew! Fingernail chewing is done. Delhi have won a playoff game for the first time in the Indian T20 League history. They should have won it in a canter but some nerves almost saw them lose the game out of their grasp.
End of over 20 ( 11 Runs )Delhi Capitals 165/7 19.5Khaleel Ahmed to Keemo Paul. FOUR, FOUR! Delhi enter Qualifier 2! Keemo Paul has hit that to the boundary. A short ball and on middle, it is slower in pace. Paul picks it and powers it through square leg. The fielder in the deep runs to his right and tries to stop it but fails to do so. The Delhi players rush onto the field. They are elated as THEY WIN BY 2 WICKETS!
Trent Boult walks in at number 10, replacing Mishra.
19.4Khaleel Ahmed to Amit Mishra. out, OUT! Mishra has come in the way of the throw and he has been given his marching orders! That is the correct decision and now Delhi need 2 in 2 with Keemo Paul on strike. Drama here. Khaleel bowls a full ball and it is outside off. Mishra swings but misses. They go for a bye. Saha misses the throw at his end. Ahmed collects it and throws it at his end but it hits Mishra. They appeal for obstruction of field and Williamson is also going for the review. First it is time for the review and it shows no edge. However, another discussion takes place and they now want to check if Mishra has come in way of the throw. After several replays, the decision is ruled in the favor of the bowler.
Is that a wicket? Hyderabad are appealing for OBSTRUCTING THE FIELD. Saha's underarm missed the stumps at the striker's end but then Khaleel collected and had a shy at the bowler's end. Mishra then changed his track, running in between the throw and the stumps and got hit. Khaleel immediately appealed to umpire Ravi. He referred it upstairs with the soft signal as NOT OUT. First, they checked the caught behind and Ultra Edge detected nothing. So Umpire Ravi indicated not out. Then, Khaleel again appealed to the umpire. Actually, the confusion arose because Khaleel signalled the 'T' which was a review for a caught behind. But he was actually appealing for obstructing the field and after numerous replays, it looks like Mishra should be given out...
19.3Khaleel Ahmed to Keemo Paul. 1 run, A single now! 3 in 2. Paul works it through mid-wicket and takes one.
19.2Khaleel Ahmed to Keemo Paul. no run, A dot! Short and wide outside off, this is inside the tramline. Paul looks to put bat on ball but misses. 4 in 3 needed.
19.1Khaleel Ahmed to Amit Mishra. 1 run, Cool, calm and composed by Mishra. He opens the face and guides it down to third man for one. 3 needed in 5 now.
19.1Khaleel Ahmed to Amit Mishra. wide, 1 run, WIDE! Not the start Williamson would have wanted. It is the slower one outside off, Mishra looks to put bat on ball but then at the very end leaves it. It is outside the tramline and it has been wided.
End of over 19 ( 7 Runs )Delhi Capitals 158/7 18.6Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Amit Mishra. no run, A dot which means 5 is needed in the last over. Also, Mishra will face the first ball. Length and around off, Paul looks to defend but misses. Game on here!
Who will bowl the final over? Khaleel Ahmed it should be. 2-0-17-2 so far. Can he still swing the game Hyderabad's way?
Amit Mishra walks in at number 9, replacing Pant.
