Jonny Bairstow and bowlers starred as Sunrisers Hyderabad completed a hat-trick of wins, beating Delhi Capitals by five wickets in the 16th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday. (Delhi Capitals vs Sunrisers Hyderabad: AS IT HAPPENED)
Chasing 130, Bairstow, who had scored a hundred in the previous game, led Hyderabad’s charge as the England batsman hammered 48 off 28 balls, hitting 9 fours and a six. Rahul Tewatia dismissed Bairstow to end a quickfire 64-run opening stand between Bairstow and David Warner. The left-hander followed Bairstow to the dug-out soon after being dismissed by Kagiso Rabada in the eighth over.
DC managed to stem the flow of runs, disallowing the middle-order of Vijay Shankar, Manish Pandey and Deepak Hooda any chances to score quick runs. The three could only score 16, 10 and 10 respectively as the home team kept the things tight.
While DC did their bit to push SRH on the backfoot, the target was a little too low for their liking as Mohammad Nabi and Yusuf Pathan kept their nerves, with the Afghanistan allrounder hitting wins to seal SRH’s win with nine balls to spare.
Earlier, Bhuvneshwar Kumar won the toss and elected to bowl and his bowlers justified his decision and restricted DC to 129/8 on what was a rather sluggish wicket. Nabi, who had scalped four wickets against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the previous game, Bhuvneshwar and Siddarth Kaul got two wickets each as DC batsmen, barring skipper Shreyas Iyer, did not apply themselves. DC did not to find any momentum and lost the wickets at the regular intervals. While Prithvi Shaw did hit two fours in the first over, Bhuvneshwar dismissed him in the third over to give SRH their first breakthrough. Shikhar Dhawan too did not last long and got out in the final over of the powerplay.
While Iyer scored 43, his side continued to lost wickets at regular intervals. The trio of Rishabh Pant, who had set the stage on fire in Delhi’s opening game against Mumbai Indians, Tewatia and Colin Ingram scored five runs each as DC were reduced to 75/5. While Hooda removed Pant, Nabi dismissed Tewatia before Pandey’s brilliance in the field saw Ingram walk back to the dugout.
Iyer was the next man to get out as Rashid Khan gave SRH their sixth wicket. And it was only due to a couple of sixes from Axar Patel towards in the final over that Delhi were able to slightly lift themselves towards a decent total.
Brief scores: Sunrisers Hyderabad 131/5 (Jonny Bairstow 48, Mohammad Nabi 17*; Axar Patel 1/18) beat Delhi Capitals 129/8 (Shreyas Iyer 43, Axar Patel 23*; Mohammad Nabi 2/21) by five wickets

We're done with this one. Indian T20 League action continues on Friday, as Bangalore welcome Kolkata to the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The action begins at 2000 local (1430 GMT). Do join in for that one. Cheers!
Man of the Match, Jonny Bairstow, says the surface had less bounce than in Hyderabad, so is glad they won the toss. Adds that it's the first time he's played on such a track since the season began. States that he kept an eye out on things when they were bowling, which helped him assess the conditions well. Reckons that it's good that they've won three games on the bounce, and they have a good group of players, so is looking forward to the coming matches.
Hyderabad skipper, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, says he doesn't find captaincy easy, but is trying to do his best. Admits that he wasn't sure how the wicket would play, so was happy he won the toss and got a chance to assess the conditions. Mentions that he didn't think the wicket would be so slow. States that the wickets will be slower in the second half of the tournament, so will base their team combination on that. On Kane Williamson, he says that he's close to being fully fit, but they don't want to rush him.
Rashid Khan, who is up for a chat now, says it has been wonderful till now. Mentions that it was a team effort from them. Credits the way Jonny Bairstow played at the start and also acknowledges the effort by the bowlers for the way they bowled. States that the wicket looked like a 140-150 one and they did really well to restrict them to the score they did. Ends by saying that he did get nervous towards the end and he feared a collapse but he is happy that did not happen.
Delhi skipper, Shreyas Iyer, says it was a difficult game and losing the toss also did not help. Admits that they did not play well as a batting unit but they should learn from this game and come out with a positive mindset in the next one. Mentions that 140 was the score he was looking for but they lost too many wickets early on and he did not get a lot of support. Appreciates the character shown by his team to pull the game back with the ball in the middle overs but unfortunately, they could not come out on top.
Delhi needed more wickets and that too quickly. The fact that they conceded as much as 62 runs in the Powerplay in itself proved to be a body blow to them. They came back well in the middle overs, recovering to a decent extent, but it wasn't enough. Barring Morris, everyone who bowled bagged a wicket each. Had Axar Patel grabbed on to that caught and bowled chance in the second over of the chase, things would certainly have been much more interesting for sure. Earlier in the evening, Delhi posted 130 on the board, courtesy Iyer's anchoring knock and Axar's late flurry, but it didn't prove to be enough.
A comfortable win for the visitors in the end. They grab their third win of the season and go top of the table. The total was a moderate one, but the surface was always tricky. Though, Jonny Bairstow's fiery start put everything to bed. That set it up for the rest to come and made it easier for the batsmen to do their jobs. Some wickets fell at regular intervals, but Nabi came in and added the finishing touches to get his side over the line.
End of over 19 ( 17 Runs )SRH 131/5 18.3Kagiso Rabada to Mohammad Nabi. SIX, SIX! And Mohammad Nabi finishes it off in style! What a hit from the al-rounder, this is marvellous batting. Short and outside off, the Afghan makes a little room for himself and upper cuts it over the third man fence for a flat maximum. HYDERABAD WIN BY 5 WICKETS!
18.2Kagiso Rabada to Mohammad Nabi. FOUR, FOUR! That's clobbered! Superb hit from Nabi. Fuller in length and attacking the stumps, Nabi swings across the line and slogs it past the diving short mid-wicket fielder. The placement is so good it beats the man in the deep as well.
18.1Kagiso Rabada to Yusuf Pathan. 1 run, Fuller and just outside off, Pathan drives it on the up towards wide mid off and gets off strike.
End of over 18 ( 6 Runs )SRH 120/5 17.6Chris Morris to Mohammad Nabi. no run, Dot ball, but 6 off the over. Morris bangs it short and angles it on on leg, Nabi makes room to loft it over the off side but misses.
17.5Chris Morris to Mohammad Nabi. no run, Extremely full on off, drilled straight to the man at mid off.
17.4Chris Morris to Mohammad Nabi. FOUR, FOUR! That's going to hurt him. Poor line, makes it all too easy for the Afghan. It's shorter and slower down leg, Nabi just helps it on its way past the diving keeper to the fine leg fence.
17.3Chris Morris to Yusuf Pathan. 1 run, Morris cleverly takes the pace off this one and Pathan gets a leading edge, but it lands safely. Full on leg, the batter closes the face early and the ball pops up towards mid on. A run is collected.
17.2Chris Morris to Mohammad Nabi. 1 run, Yorker. Right on the money, but Nabi digs it out off the inner half onto his boot. It rolls away towards point and the batsmen cross over quickly.
17.1Chris Morris to Mohammad Nabi. no run, Perfect start. Dot ball from Morris. He hits the deck, pitches it on a length on off, Nabi defends it with the full face of the bat.
Chris Morris brought back on.
End of over 17 ( 3 Runs )SRH 114/5 16.6Kagiso Rabada to Yusuf Pathan. no run, Dot ball. Behind a good length, on middle stump, worked to the man in front of square leg. Just 3 off the over, a good one from Rabada. 16 needed in 18 for Delhi to win.
16.5Kagiso Rabada to Mohammad Nabi. 1 run, Full and coming back in on middle and leg, it's wristed through the vacant mid-wicket area for one run.
16.4Kagiso Rabada to Yusuf Pathan. 1 run, The batsman has driven it through mid on. One run added to the total.
