Mumbai Indians beat Chennai Super Kings by 6 wickets | Mumbai Indians Vs Chennai Super Kings Qualifier 1 match

    • We are done with Qualifier 1. Yet another one-sided affair in El Clasico with Mumbai running all over Chennai. On Wednesday, Delhi and Hyderabad will clash in the Eliminator and the winner of that contest will face Chennai in Qualifier 2 on Friday. Do join us at 1930 local (1400 GMT) for all the action. Cheers!

    • Man of the Match, Suryakumar Yadav is all smiles and says that it was very important for someone in the top three to bat through with the pitch turning and on the slower side. Adds that he just wanted to play down the ground and focus more on singles and doubles and finding the gaps. Tells that the plan was that someone from the top order will have to stay till the end as it won't be easy for the batsmen coming in later.

    • Mumbai skipper, Rohit Sharma says that it was a great effort and a great feeling that they will be playing the final. Also talks about the break they will be having. He is very happy with the performance as well. Adds that they have the bowlers to restrict Chennai and have the confidence in his batters to do the job. Mentions about the bowling unit for coming in quite nicely and exploiting the conditions. Praises Jayant Yadav and calls him a quality bowler and given that he is a finger spinner, they knew he can extract extra spin and bounce. Shares that they had plans for everything and is happy to execute perfectly. Credits his bowlers again for restricting Chennai to a low total. On Suryakumar Yadav's batting, Rohit replies that he is one of the better batsmen for them against spinners and they knew about the spin threat that Chennai possess. Feels it was a perfect pitch for SKY to come good. On beating Chennai quite often in Chennai, he tells that they have a balanced squad for all conditions and that's the key for their success.

    • Ishan Kishan is up for a chat. Says that his plan was to rotate the strike as Yadav was in good form. Adds that to build the partnership was the plan and they did really well. Adds that they had good batsmen at the back and wanted to take it deep and be positive. Admits that the wicket was not easy as it was spinning a lot but he and SKY have batted on such surfaces a lot in domestic cricket. Tells that they wanted to be positive against Tahir and not be overcautious. Says that it's a good feeling to be in the final and is happy that they will get a couple of days rest.

    • Chennai skipper, MS Dhoni smiles and says that somebody has to lose. Nothing went their way, he adds. Feels that they had to assess the conditions given they have played quite a few games here but they didn't plan accordingly and admits that the batting needs to get better. Mentions that on an off they have done better with the bat. Wants them to be more clever with the shot selection and hopes to do better in the next game. States that they tried hard with the ball but feels they could have bowled slightly better. Rues the fact that they didn't have enough runs on the board and calls it an off game for them. Is happy that they will have one more chance to get into the final.

    • Dhoni won the toss but Rohit sized the pitch better. His bowlers did not allow the Men In Yellow to score freely and then with the bat, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan's 80-run stand put Chennai on the back foot. Surya was in good touch but it was Kishan's knock which took Chennai aback. He counter-attacked Tahir and Harbhajan and the fielding side could not recover. Jadeja, Harbhajan and Tahir did bowl well, with combined figures of 12-0-76-3 but they could never really put pressure on Mumbai's middle order.

    • Pardon my poor memory, but don't remember a single season where Mumbai have literally cruised through almost the entire tournament. And the reason for their cruise is that they took the best team - or the supposed best team on by the horns and came out triumphant. Third meeting against Chennai and all three games have been resounding one-sided wins. Here, it was no different.

    • Number 1 in the league stage. Number 1 to reach the final. Oh Mumbai, probably the best season ever for you is enfolding.

    • End of over 19 ( 7 Runs )MI 132/4 18.3Deepak Chahar to Suryakumar Yadav. 1 run, Here it is... MUMBAI WIN BY 6 WICKETS! Short in length around off, Suryakumar pulls it behind square leg for the winning run. The blue team is through and this will be their fifth appearance in the final. What a consistent team!

    • 18.2Deepak Chahar to Suryakumar Yadav. FOUR, FOUR! Cleverly done! SKY is a master of this shot. He just loves playing fancy shots behind the wickets. Back of a length ball angling into him, Yadav gets across the stumps and spoons it over the keeper for a boundary.

    • 18.1Deepak Chahar to Hardik Pandya. 1 run, An off pace delivery, short and outside off, Hardik doesn't get hold of his pull shot and forces it down to long on for a run.

    • Deepak Chahar to bowl now...

    • End of over 18 ( 1 Runs )MI 126/4 17.6Ravindra Jadeja to Suryakumar Yadav. no run, Play and a miss! Jadeja hurls in a quicker one outside off, Suryakumar flashes and misses.

    • 17.5Ravindra Jadeja to Suryakumar Yadav. no run, Flat again, on off, spinning away, Yadav taps it down towards backward point and Hardik wants a run. He is sent back.

    • 17.4Ravindra Jadeja to Suryakumar Yadav. no run, The batsman defends it from within the crease.

    • 17.3Ravindra Jadeja to Suryakumar Yadav. no run, Well stopped, du Plessis. Still giving it all. Short and wide outside off, cut through point where Faf makes a diving stop to his right.

    • 17.2Ravindra Jadeja to Suryakumar Yadav. no run, Fires in a full ball on middle, SKY defends it off his front foot to the off side.

    • 17.1Ravindra Jadeja to Hardik Pandya. 1 run, Shortish and flat on off, Pandya goes back and powers it down to long on for a single.

    • End of over 17 ( 9 Runs )MI 125/4 16.6Dwayne Bravo to Hardik Pandya. 1 run, A low dipping full toss on off, Pandya flicks it on the leg side towards mid-wicket where Watson gets down low to stop it with one hand. They complete a run. 7 more needed.

    • 16.5Dwayne Bravo to Hardik Pandya. 2 runs, Fuller and on middle, drilled straight down the ground and returned for the second run.

    PLAYING XI

    Mumbai Indians
Quinton de Kock (W), Rohit Sharma (C), Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Jayant Yadav, Rahul Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga
    Chennai Super Kings
Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson, Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay, MS Dhoni (C) (W), Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Deepak Chahar, Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir

Rahul Chahar, Suryakumar Yadav starred as Mumbai Indians (MI) beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by six wickets in the Qualifier 1 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday and sealed a place in the final.

CSK, meanwhile, will now get another chance to make it to the summit clash but will have to beat the winner of the Delhi Capitals versus Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Qualifier 2 on Friday in Visakhapatnam.

Needing 132 runs to win, MI innings started with a wobble as Deepak Chahar struck on the second ball as he trapped MI skipper Rohit Sharma before the wickets. Harbhajan Singh then gave CSK their second breakthrough as Quinton de Kock was caught in the deep by Faf du Plessis.

However, Surya and Ishan Kishan steadied the ship for MI. While the two did not go after the bowlers, they kept the scoreboard ticking, with Surya cashing in whenever there were opportunities to go big. (IPL 2019, Qualifier 1 MI vs CSK: AS IT HAPPENED)

While Surya brought up his fifty, Imran Tahir created some panic in MI dug out and gave CSK some hope as he sent Ishan and Kurnal Pandya packing on the consecutive delivery in the 14th over. CSK could have scalped Surya’s wicket too on the first ball of the 15th over but Shane Watson dropped a sharp catch in the slip, off Ravindra Jadeja.

MI though made sure that there was no late collapse as Surya remained unbeaten on 71 as he and Hardik helped the team to cross the finish line with nine balls to spare.

While Murali Vijay was brought into the team, replacing the injured Kedar Jadhav, the Tamil Nadu batsman, who otherwise opens the innings, did not open the innings this time around as CSK chose to stick with Shane Watson and Faf, who scored 96 in CSK’s final league stage match against Kings XI Punjab.

Lasith Malinga opened the bowling for MI and conceded just one run in the first over as Faf opened his and team’s account on the final delivery of the over. MI, in the second over, had their first chance, a really difficult one though, to scalp their first wicket as leaping Jasprit Bumrah did his best to pull off a stunner to dismiss Faf off Krunal.

However, MI though did not have to wait for too long as Rahul Chahar struck on the first ball of the third over to send the South African packing.

Then, Jayant Yadav, who replaced Mitchell McClenaghan in the playing XI, gave MI a big breakthrough, removing Suresh Raina in the fourth over. The left-hander, who has an impressive record in the IPL playoffs, perished for five as MI dismissed two batsmen, who had registered fifty-plus scores in the last game, in the powerplay.

While CSK scored 19 runs in the last two overs of the powerplay, Krunal struck on the final ball of the powerplay as Yadav took a fine catch, running backwards, to get Watson out for 10 and reduced CSK to 32/3.

Vijay and Ambati Rayudu then added 31 runs together. However, Chahar struck for the second time in the match as Vijay got stumped for 26 in the 13th over.

Dhoni then joined Rayudu in the middle and despite some nervous moments during the running between the wickets in the 14th over, provided some much needed pace to CSK innings, hitting Jayant Yadav for two sixes. However, MI did not let CSK to cut loose till the 18th over.

While Dhoni did hit Malinga for two sixes in the penultimate over and survived in the final over, courtesy a Bumrah no-ball in the final over, CSK could only score 131 runs after electing to bat.

Brief scores: Mumbai Indians 132/4 (Suryakumar Yadav 71*, Ishan Kishan 28; Imran Tahir 2/33) beat Chennai Super Kings 131/4  (Ambati Rayudu 42*, MS Dhoni 37*; Rahul Chahar 2/14) by eight wickets
