England innings

Batting R B 4s 6s SR
Rory Burnsc Gary Wilson b Tim Murtagh 6 25 0 0 24
10.4
Tim Murtagh to Burns, OUT! There goes another one! England are in a spot of bother now. Murtagh gets his second. Another good catch, this time by the keeper. Tim bowls it slightly fuller around off, it tails away late. Burns looks to drive but he ends up playing inside the line. The ball goes off the outside edge and low towards the keeper who takes a good tumbling catch. Ireland are making excellent use of the new ball here.
Jason Royc Paul Stirling b Tim Murtagh 5 11 0 0 45.45
2.4
Tim Murtagh to Roy, OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! Roy's luck runs out! A poor outing on his debut. Ireland have struck early and they are mighty delighted. Just the start they would have wanted. This is a very good nut by Murtagh. It is on a length around off and shaping away just a little. Roy is drawn into the stroke. He pushes at it a little too hard. The ball goes off the outside edge low to first slip where Stirling takes it nicely.
Joe Denlylbw b Mark Adair 23 28 4 0 82.14
9.5
Adair to Denly, OUT! That is plumb in front! Adair gets one now and it is a well-deserved wicket. He has really been bowling well since the start and he gets the reward. The in-dipper catches Denly off guard. It starts from outside off and it tails back in. Denly ends up playing outside the line. The ball hits the back pad. A huge appeal follows and the umpire has his finger up immediately. This is a good start for Ireland.
Joe Root (C)lbw b Mark Adair 2 7 0 0 28.57
11.6
Adair to Root, OUT! Three reds and Root has been given his marching orders! Ireland all over England at the moment. Root, England's main batter, is walking back without making a lot of impact. Excellent use of the review by the Irish. Adair has his second now. This is on off and on a length. It jags back in. Root misses the ball as he tries to defend and gets his on the pads. A huge appeal follows but the umpire shakes his head. The Ireland players can't believe it. Their skipper though has a doubt whether there is an inside edge. He goes for the review right at the end and it proves to be the right decision. Replays roll in and it shows the on-field call has to be overturned. Pin-drop silence here.
Jonny Bairstow (W)b Tim Murtagh 0 6 0 0 0
12.4
Tim Murtagh to Bairstow, OUT! TIMBER! Right through the gate! England are five down and they have not even crossed 50. It seems like they are still in the hangover of their World Cup win. Another excellent delivery by Murtagh. This is fuller and around off, it tails back in late. Bairstow leaves a gap between bat and pad as he looks to drive, it sneaks through and hits the off pole. Into the bowling all-rounders now are Ireland.
Moeen Alic Gary Wilson b Tim Murtagh 0 7 0 0 0
14.2
Tim Murtagh to Ali, OUT! Another one bites the dust! Tim Murtagh has a fifer to his name! His first in Tests and what a venue to get it and what a time to get it. All those years of playing for Middlesex is paying off here. Outstanding from him. Moeen Ali walks back for a duck. Once again, the line and the length is perfect. It is around off, pitches and moves away. Moeen once again plays it inside the line and the ball kisses the outside edge and goes into the mitts of the keeper.
Chris Woakeslbw b Tim Murtagh 0 2 0 0 0
12.6
Tim Murtagh to Woakes, OUT! Umpire's call and Woakes now has to take the long walk back! This is unreal stuff, just unbelievable. Who would have thought England would be struggling and how! Second wicket in the over for Murtagh and 4th overall. He is breathing fire at the moment. Once again it is the movement off the pitch which gets the better of the batter. It pitches on off and then jags back in sharply. Woakes like a few other English batter, ends up playing outside the line. The ball hits him high on the back pad. An appeal follows and the finger is up. An appeal and the umpire raises his finger. Woakes reviews. Replays roll and they show that the ball is clipping the top of middle. England don't lose their review though but are in big, big trouble here.
Sam Curranc James McCollum b Boyd Rankin 18 16 2 0 112.5
20.1
B Rankin to Curran, OUT! There goes England's last hope of taking them close to the 100-run mark. A sharp catch by the short leg fielder. This is on the pads, Curran works it but does not keep it down. It goes low to the fielder there who is in a good position and he hangs onto it.
Stuart Broadc Gary Wilson b Boyd Rankin 3 16 0 0 18.75
18.4
B Rankin to Broad, OUT! There is an edge! Once again, brilliant use of the review by England. Boyd Rankin takes just the 4 balls to strike. This is around off and it is a little shorter in length. Broad looks to defend but there is a sound as the ball passes the bat. The keeper, William Porterfield takes it brilliantly by diving to his right. An appeal follows but the umpire shakes his head. Ireland review and Ultra Edge shows a spike as it passes the bat. Ireland continue to stay on top here.
Olly Stoneb Mark Adair 19 18 4 0 105.56
23.4
M Adair to Stone, OUT! Plays it on! The bowling change does the trick for Ireland. Extra bounce does the trick for Adair here. It is on a length and around middle, takes off after pitching. Stone looks to defend but the ball hits his arm and then deflects onto the stumps. ENGLAND HAVE BEEN BOWLED OUT FOR 85!

Ireland innings

William Porterfield (C)c Jack Leach b Sam Curran 14 40 2 0 35
12.1
Sam Curran to Porterfield, OUT! Curran comes on and he strikes straightaway. A soft, soft dismissal and a much-needed wicket for England. It is a short ball but skids through off the wicket. Porterfield looks to pull but the ball hits the higher portion of the bat and lobs towards the man in front of square. Leach makes no mistake. Porterfield walks back disappointed and rightly so. It was not a great delivery. He was looking really good until then. Ireland trail by another 53 runs.
James McCollumb Sam Curran 19 54 3 0 35.19
18.4
Sam Curran to McCollum, OUT! Plays it on! Sam Curran gets another one. Excellent bowling from him. He comes around the wicket and lands this around off, it is angling into McCollum. He looks to drive it against the angle and that proves to be his downfall. He ends up getting an inside edge which shatters the stumps behind. Ireland still 41 runs behind.
Andy Balbirnieb Olly Stone 55 69 10 0 79.71
36.1
O Stone to Balbirnie, OUT! Bowled! First wicket for Stone in Test cricket and what a beauty it is! Full and pacy, it pitches on middle and leg. Balbirnie expects it to come in but the ball moves away just a bit after pitching. Balbirnie plays all over it and it goes onto hit the middle stump. That ball is every fast bowler's dream ball.
Paul Stirlinglbw b Stuart Broad 36 43 4 0 83.72
33.3
S Broad to Stirling, OUT! High but not high enough to change the umpire's call. The ball is going to clip the top of leg. Good length ball pitching on off, it comes back in sharply. Stirling looks to defend but gets beaten by the inward movement. The ball hits him flush on the front pads. Broad starts celebrating and then turns back to see the umpire's reaction. Aleem Dar agrees with Broad and raises his finger. Stirling has a chat with his partner and then takes it upstairs. Replays roll in and Hawk Eye shows the ball was going onto clip the top of leg pole. End of a good knock from Stirling.
Kevin O'Briennot out 28 73 2 0 38.36
Gary Wilson (W)c Joe Root b Olly Stone 0 4 0 0 0
36.5
O Stone to G Wilson, OUT! Caught! Gary goes for a duck. After peppering him with a few short balls, Stone hits the deck hard on this one on off, Wilson goes chasing after it but ends up getting a thick outside edge, It goes straight to Joe Root at first slip who takes an easy catch. Root has not had the best of days at slip but this catch should give him confidence.
Stuart Thompsonb Stuart Broad 0 5 0 0 0
39.1
S Broad to S Thompson, OUT! Another beauty from Broad! Ireland are losing the plot here in the final session of the day. Broad bowls it full around off, Thompson shoulders arms to it expecting it to go away after pitching. The ball though comes in with the angle and goes onto disturb the off pole. Thompson would be disappointed looking at that and he will be reminded about this wicket for sometime now.
Mark Adairb Sam Curran 3 9 0 0 33.33
43.1
Sam Curran to Adair, OUT! Drags it on! Another one in the innings! A poor shot to be honest by Adair! Yes, this is short but not very short. Also, it is angling away from off. Adair looks to drag the pull through mid-wicket but the ball hits the inside edge and disturbs the stumps behind. From 132 for 2, Ireland are 149 for 7. England into the lower order now.
Andy McBrineb Stuart Broad 11 36 2 0 30.56
52.4
S Broad to McBrine, OUT! Chopped on! Broad comes around the wicket and bowls it with pace around off. The ball comes in with the angle. McBrine looks to defend but he is late on it as he gets an inside edge onto the stumps. England two wickets away from bowling out Ireland.
Tim Murtaghc Rory Burns b Olly Stone 16 10 4 0 160
55.3
O Stone to Murtagh, OUT! End of the entertainment as Murtagh holes out. Tim makes room again and Olly Stone follows him with a short one. Murtagh still goes for the pull but mistimes it towards deep mid-wicket where Burns takes it falling forward. Ireland lead by 110, they have just the one wicket in hand.
Boyd Rankinb Moeen Ali 7 7 1 0 100
58.2
Ali to B Rankin, OUT! Bowled! Right through him. Floated ball on middle, Rankin goes for a big heave but misses. The ball goes onto hit the middle pole. Ireland bowled out for 207 and lead England by 122 runs.

Jack Leachc Mark Adair b Tim Murtagh 92 162 16 0 56.79
45.4
Tim Murtagh to J Leach, OUT! Caught! No hundred for Jack Leach either. Finally Ireland manage to take Leach's catch. Murtagh gets his first of the innings. Good length ball around off, it moves away after pitching. Leach has a poke at it but gets a thick outside edge. The ball goes straight to Adair at second slip. He makes no mistake this time and takes a very simple catch. End of a brilliant knock from Leach. What a knock this has been from Leach! He came out as a night watchman but he has done his job as a proper batsman. He walks out to a well-deserved standing ovation. England lead by 60 here but they have lost 3 wickets.
Rory Burnsc Gary Wilson b Boyd Rankin 6 26 0 0 23.08
10.4
B Rankin to Burns, OUT! EDGED AND TAKEN! The bowling change works wonders for Ireland. Boyd Rankin strikes in his first over itself, just like he did in the first innings. He gets one full and nicks the batter off. However, the shot might not have been needed there. This is on a length and outside off, Burns could have left it but he pokes at it. An outside edge is induced and it goes into the mitts of the keeper. First breakthrough for Ireland. England still 96 away.
Jason Royb Stuart Thompson 72 78 10 1 92.31
40.3
Thompson to J Roy, OUT! Bowled! No debut hundred for Roy. Thompson comes steaming in and bowls a beautiful inswinging ball. It is full and pitching on off. Roy looks to drive it on the up but misreads the swing on it. There is a big gap between the bat and pad and the ball goes through that gap to disturb the stumps. 145-run stand comes to an end. England lead by 49. Ireland needed some inspiration and this wicket might just bring them that. Much needed wicket for the visitors.
Joe Denlyrun out (Kevin O'Brien) 10 31 0 0 32.26
52.2
McBrine to Denly, OUT! RUN OUT! Ireland are back in the game! From 171 for 1, England are now 194 for 4. Denly, who has been short of runs has been run out. Surely that is the last way he would have wanted to be dismissed and surely it is the last thing England would have wanted. England are effectively 72 for 4. This is on off, Root works it towards mid-wicket and calls for a run but then throws Denly the dummy who is halfway down the track. Too difficult for Denly to get back now. He does try but Kevin picks the ball up and throws it to the bowler who whips the bails off. Denly is way short. He walks back disappointed and Ireland are elated.
Joe Root (C)c Gary Wilson b Mark Adair 31 64 3 0 48.44
65.2
M Adair to Root, OUT! There goes Joe Root! The dropped catch has not cost a lot. Adair who has been Ireland's best bowler today, has got the big fish. An excellent catch too by Wilson. Also, that wicket means, the last recognized batsman is out of here. 150 now looks difficult. Root takes a few steps ahead and Adair bowls it just ahead of a length and around off. It shapes away. Root looks to drive but the length is not quite there. The outside edge is induced and it goes towards first slip. Wilson dives and takes it. England are effectively 117 for 6.
Jonny Bairstow (W)lbw b Mark Adair 0 6 0 0 0
53.6
Adair to Bairstow, OUT! Umpire's call it is. Bairstow grabs a pair in this innings. Just like in the first innings, it is the inswinging ball which has outdone him. It is pitching around off and comes back in after pitching.Bairstow looks to defend but plays all over it. The Irish players put a loud and confident appeal. Aleem Dar agrees with him. Bairstow takes it upstairs straightaway. Replays roll in, Ultra Edge shows no involvement of bat. Ball Tracker rolls in later on and shows that the ball was clipping the top of middle and leg. Not the start to the Test summer Bairstow would have wanted. Maybe the gruesome World Cup campaign has taken it's toll on him. England lead by 72, meaning they are half the side down under 100 here.
Moeen Alic Gary Wilson b Boyd Rankin 9 20 1 0 45
60.4
B Rankin to Ali, OUT! Caught behind! Moeen Ali cannot do much as he too walks back. Rankin bangs it in short. It comes in with the angle, the ball also keeps rising onto him. Moeen has a poke at it and ends up getting a feather on it. It goes straight to Gary Wilson who takes a simple catch. England are technically 6 down for 97. Moeen Ali's poor run of form continues. Ireland have comeback into this match like a raging bull.
Chris Woakesc Andy Balbirnie b Mark Adair 13 19 3 0 68.42
67.5
M Adair to Woakes, OUT! Another one bites the dust! England are 8 down now. Their dressing room just can't believe what is happening. Adair gets his third. Once again Woakes flashes at a ball which was not there to be hit. It is just behind a driving length outside off. Woakes goes after it but the ball hits the outside edge and goes low towards second slip. Balbirnie takes a good catch. Woakes is disgusted as he walks back and Ireland are delighted. England are effectively 126 for 8.
Sam Curranc James McCollum b Stuart Thompson 37 29 4 2 127.59
73.6
Thompson to Sam Curran, OUT! In the air... taken! End of the entertainment as Curran walks back but not after he has played a very good hand. England are nine down and they lead by 171. This is short and on middle, Curran looks to pull but does not get on top of the bounce. It goes off the top edge towards deep square leg where McCollum takes a good catch.

S Thompson to O Stone, OUT! Bowled! England are bowled out in the first ball off the day! Thompson steams in and bowls a full, inswinging ball on off. It comes back in, Stone looks to drive straight but the ball goes between the gap of bat and pad. It goes onto to demolish the leg pole. England bowled out for 303. Ireland need 182 to win.

C Woakes to Porterfield, OUT! Brilliant catch from Bairstow! Woakes corrects his line and pitches it on off and middle. Chris finally manages to move the ball off the deck. Porterfield looks to defend but the away movement sees the ball kiss his outside edge. It goes low to the left of Bairstow behind the stumps. Jonny dives to that side quickly and takes a good low catch. This is the thing with Woakes, if he gets a ball right it usually ends up being converted into a wicket. Ireland have lost their skipper early here. This Test match is evenly poised here.
James McCollumc Joe Root b Chris Woakes 11 17 1 0 64.71
9.1
C Woakes to J McCollum, OUT! Caught! Third wicket for Woakes! He was not getting much movement in the start but now he is making the ball do the talking here. It is on the channel of uncertainty, i.e. very close to the off pole. McCollum too falls for the trap and goes for a push. He ends up getting a thick outside edge. The ball flies to first slip. Root there takes it with relative ease.
Andy Balbirniec Joe Root b Stuart Broad 5 10 1 0 50
6.6
S Broad to Balbirnie, OUT! Caught! This is champion stuff from Broad. Bowls two short ones to Balbirnie and now bowls a brilliant good length ball. It is pitched on off and moves away. It is perfectly in the line of uncertainty. Balbirnie was in two minds, whether to leave or defend. He goes with the latter option and ends up getting a thick outside edge. It goes straight to Root at first slip who takes a very comfortable catch. Big wicket for England as Balbirnie was the best batter in the first innings.
Paul Stirlingb Chris Woakes 0 2 0 0 0
7.3
Woakes to P Stirling, OUT! Bowled! Stirling goes for a duck. This is just world class from Woakes. The last ball was slightly short and moved away. This time he bowls it full and nips it back in. It is pitched around off and comes in, Stirling looks to play it straight but leaves a massive gap between bat and pad. The ball goes right through that gate and disturbs the stumps. Ireland have their back against the wall now. England needed early wickets they have got 3 here.
Kevin O'Brienlbw b Stuart Broad 4 8 1 0 50
10.1
S Broad to O'Brien, OUT! Ireland are falling like a pack of cards! Broad gets his second and probably Ireland's last hope, Kevin O'Brien is walking back. Stuart lands it on a length and around off, it jags back in sharply. Kevin O'Brien looks to play at it by staying rooted to his crease. He misses and the ball hits the pads. Broad is already celebrating as he starts appealing and the umpire raises the finger. Kevin O'Brien does not review and rightly so as Hawk Eye shows three reds. England just 4 wickets away now. Still just over 30 minutes to go in this session.
Gary Wilson (W)lbw b Chris Woakes 0 2 0 0 0
9.3
C Woakes to Wilson, OUT! England manage to overturn the on field umpire's call. Half the side back in the hut for Ireland. Woakes bowls it full and this one comes in to the right-hander. Wilson is done for the pace and swing here. He looks to defend but misses. The ball hits him on his back pad and the English players put in a huge appeal. The umpire though does not agree with him. England players are pretty sure they have their man. Root signals the T. Replays roll in, Ultra Edge shows no involvement of the bat. Ball Tracker rolls in next and it shows three reds. The umpire will have to change his decision and Wilson too is out of here.
Stuart Thompsonc Joe Root b Chris Woakes 4 9 1 0 44.44
13.5
C Woakes to S Thompson, OUT! Caught! 5-fer for Woakes and he goes into the honors board at the Home of Cricket. It is pitched on off and the ball goes with the angle, Thompson goes chasing after it with his drive. He gets nothing but a fat outside edge. The ball goes to the right of Root. The English Test skipper moves to that side swiftly and takes his 3rd catch of the game. Woakes takes the ball, raises it up and soaks in all the applause. He now technically becomes the first Englishman to take a 5-fer against Ireland.
Mark Adairb Stuart Broad 8 15 0 1 53.33

S Broad to M Adair, OUT! Cleaned 'Em! Broad has the last laugh. He serves three short balls and then goes full. It is around off and nips back in, Adair looks to drive but just like the previous batsmen before him he too leaves a big gap between bat and pad. The ball once again goes between that gap to disturb the off pole. England just 3 wickets away from a win here.
Andy McBrinec Joe Root b Stuart Broad 0 2 0 0 0
14.1
S Broad to McBrine, OUT! Root with another catch! 4th wicket for Broad and England just a wicket away from wrapping this Test. Broad bowls it fuller around off, it moves away slightly after pitching. This is too good a ball for a number 10. McBrine looks to defend but ends up getting an outside edge to first slip. Joe Root there, takes his 4th catch of the innings.
