COMMENTARY

Right then, that's all from this game. It is England who have drawn first blood in the series, winning the first Test by 267 runs and will now be eying a 2-0 whitewash. On the other hand, New Zealand will look to put up a better show in the second Test and draw level in the series. The second and final Test of this series begins on Friday, 24th February at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. The first ball will be at 3.30 am IST (10.00 pm GMT). As always, you can join us in advance for the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!
Ben Stokes, the skipper of England, says that they were clinical in both departments. Adds that they executed their plans with the pink ball under the lights and it was always going to be tough for anyone against Stuart Broad and James Anderson. Feels that they managed to react well to whatever was thrown at them by New Zealand. Also says that it was an entertaining game and it was what everyone wanted. Ends by saying that Harry Brook is a fantastic talent and he is going to be a global superstar.
Tim Southee, the skipper of New Zealand, says that it is disappointing and credits England for the way they played. Adds that the decision to bowl first was right but the way England batted was brilliant. Feels that they needed to stem the flow of runs and create chances. Also mentions that Stuart Broad bowled exceptionally well last night. Ends by saying that it will be a different challenge at the Basin Reserve and his team are looking forward to that game.
Harry Brook is the Player of the Match for scoring fifties in both innings. He says that there was no standout performer in this game and everyone contributed equally well. Adds that bowlers in particular bowled extremely well on this docile pitch. Feels that it did help with New Zealand bowling short balls. Shares that he stuck to his strengths and took on the bowlers. Ends by saying that he is excited to bat every time and he is happy that he is carrying on from his form in Pakistan.
Time for the Presentations...
England though impressed with the bat yet again and set New Zealand a target of close to 400 with three of their batters scoring 50s. Their bowlers then were ruthless as they ran riot in the last session of Day 3. Broad was at his best then. Day 4 though belonged to James Anderson and Jack Leach who made quick work of the lower order to complete a comprehensive win.
To be honest, New Zealand were just outplayed. Things just did not go their way, whereas, for England, every move they made worked. First, after being inserted, they managed to score 325 with Harry Brook impressing yet again. Also, they weren't bowled out but declared on the last session of Day 1. That decision proved to be a good one as they managed to bag three wickets before Stumps. They had New Zealand staring down the barrel at 83 for 5. Had it not been for Tom Blundell who scored a brilliant ton, England would have gotten a big lead. Courtesy of that superb knock, the lead was just a slender one.
A thumping win for the visitors and England's impressive form in the longer format continues. They needed five wickets heading into Day 4 to win this game and they wrapped it up quite quickly.

We are all set for the play to commence on Day 4! The umpires and players make their way out in the middle. Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell will resume their innings for New Zealand. Jack Leach will start the proceedings with the ball for England. Here we go...
New Zealand had an off day on Day 3 and conceded way too many runs trying to bounce the English batters out and were a bit unlucky to have to face the new ball completely under lights. Stuart Broad wrecked havoc and the hosts found themselves with half the side back in the hut and a mountain and a half to climb. Can they put on a bit of fight and frustrate the visitors? Or will the English bowling attack tear through the remaining batters? We shall find out soon as the start of Day 4 isn't far away.
Hello and a warm welcome everyone to Day 4 of the first Test between New Zealand and England at the Bay Oval in Mount Manganui. The game flowed at quite a rapid pace on Day 3 as a total of 13 wickets fell and currently, the visitors are in pole position to go on and get the win on Day 4 itself.
... DAY 4, SESSION 1 ...
Right then, New Zealand still need 331 runs to win and have just five wickets in hand. It is more than just a tough ask and the game seems to be going in favor of England. But, one thing that is guaranteed is that there will be a fight shown by the Kiwis, how long it lasts is a different thing though. Can England clean up the hosts early on Day 4? Or will they face some stern resistance under the warm sun? Join us at 6.30 am IST (1 am GMT) on Sunday to find out. You can catch the build-up a lot earlier as well. Cheers!
England ended Day 1 in a commanding position and after a bit of a fight from the hosts on the second day, the visitors are now well and truly on the verge of victory. This is largely due to their solid batting effort and a scintillating spell by Stuart Broad under the lights. Broad bowled 10 overs on the trot but he did all the damage early on as he picked up four out of the five wickets. Broad got the ball to come into right and left-handers alike and ripped through the Kiwi top order. Ollie Robinson supported him well and now they will look to come out on Day 4 and wrap up the game in the first session or so.
New Zealand failed to bowl out England in the second session and whilst they did eventually get the job done, it was right around when the lights started to take full effect. Just like late on Day 1, the Kiwis lost wickets in heap late on Day 3 and were soon five down for just 28 runs. After that, Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell weathered the storm and as the ball got a bit older, scoring became easy as well. The pair has done well but will need to at least bat the whole of the first session on Day 4 together to give their side an outside chance.
Three days have now gone by in the first Test between New Zealand and England and it has been blockbuster entertainment on all three days. Day 3 started with England leading by 98 runs and they managed to just keep scoring whilst losing wickets and ended up with a big lead of 393 runs. Currently, the hosts are reeling at 63 for 5 and would need more than a miracle to escape defeat with two full days of action remaining.

COMMENTARY

End of over

NZ126-all out (45.3 Ovs)

We are back for New Zealand's reply! The umpires are back out in the middle and the English players take their position on the field. It will be Devon Conway and Tom Latham to open the innings for New Zealand. James Anderson has the brand-new pink cherry in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...
... SECOND INNINGS ...
Right then, 325 isn't the biggest score on this deck but one can understand Ben Stokes' decision to declare here. If England are able to make use of the proper ball, then they would be firmly in the driver's seat. The New Zealand openers however will look to ride the early storm from the likes of James Anderson and Stuart Broad and remain unscathed. We shall find out how things unfold as the Kiwi reply is coming up shortly.
New Zealand will be happy to have restricted England after the Dinner break but won't be that pleased as they now have to face the new ball under lights which could prove to be decisive. Neil Wagner was all over the place with the new ball but showed his class with the old ball and bounced out the English lower order to end with four wickets. Scott Kuggeleijn too bowled well from the other end after the interval and the pair of them ran through the lower order.
Oh, well Ben Stokes has decided to declare! England finish up with 325/9 and Ben Stokes and co want to bowl late on Day 1 under lights and make the most use of the new ball. They went into the break being 279/5 but it all went downhill after the break as the Kiwi bowlers bowled aggressive lengths. Harry Brook fell 11 short of what would have been a fourth hundred in as many Test matches as well. The pair of Brook and Ben Foakes put on 89 runs for the 6th wicket which took the visitors over the 300-run mark.

... DAY 1, SESSION 3 ...
Managing to bowl the first maiden of the Test in the 47th over of the game sums up New Zealand's story with the ball so far. Having failed to make a mark in the first session, the hosts needed to strike early in the second session and they did just that dismissing Joe Root and Ollie Pope in quick succession. They switched to bowling short stuff and that brought about success for them as Ben Stokes pulled one straight to Tom Latham off Scott Kuggeleijn's bowling. Having reduced England to 209-5, New Zealand failed to capitalize and let it slip from thereon. Tim Southee has truly led from the front with two wickets and he will require support from other bowlers in the post-dinner session. Do join us back at 11.30 am IST (6.00 am GMT) for the third and final session on Day 1.
Session Summary - 25 overs, 145 runs and 3 wickets. Another entertaining session comes to an end and it will be England who will be the happier side going into the break. Joe Root and Ollie Pope resumed their innings after tea and were positive in their approach. However, the same approach brought about their downfall with both batters departing one after the other. Ben Stokes joined Harry Brook in the middle and played the second fiddle in the partnership. He got off to a start but could not carry on and his dismissal put England in a spot of bother with 5 wickets down. Ben Foakes took his time initially but once set forged a solid recovery with Harry Brook. The duo have stitched an unbeaten 70-run stand to put England in a commanding position.

We are back for the post-tea session. New Zealand players make their way out in the middle followed by Joe Root and Ollie Pope. Neil Wagner will get the proceedings underway with the ball in this session. Here we go...
... DAY 1, SESSION 2 ...
After Tim Southee called it right and opted to bowl first, he found his mojo straightaway dismissing Zak Crawley in his second over. However, other bowlers failed to back their skipper up from the other end. They kept bowling loose deliveries which allowed the opposition batters to release the pressure. Tim Southee persisted with Blair Tickner and that paid dividends for New Zealand as the debutant provided them with a much-needed breakthrough making Ben Duckett his maiden Test victim. New Zealand have their task cut out against this fearless English batting attack in the second session. Grab a coffee and do join us back at 8.50 am IST (3.20 am GMT) for what promises to be another entertaining session of cricket.
Session Summary - 23 overs, 134 runs and 2 wickets. As the first session comes to an end, it will be safe to say that 'Bazball' has arrived in New Zealand and how. After being asked to bat first, England did lose an early wicket but Ben Duckett took charge and unleashed himself on the Kiwi attack. He did not shy away from pouncing on any loose delivery and stroked his way to a 36-ball fifty. He, along with Ollie Pope stitched a 99-run stand before falling 16 runs short of his hundred. Skipper Tim Southee has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...
... THIRD INNINGS ...
England will be wondering what happened and where exactly they lost the plot. Having the opposition pegged back at 83/5 in the first session on Day 2 to ending up conceding 306 runs in total isn't what they had in mind. The visitors were completely taken aback by the hard-hitting display by Tom Blundell and even Scott Kuggeleijn took their bowlers to the cleaners. Ollie Robinson did bowl well and picked up a well-deserved four-fer but they were made to toil. James Anderson did pick up the final wicket with the new ball but the English openers now have to come out and face the new ball under lights which we saw on the previous day was a difficult thing to do. Will England be up for the challenge? Find out soon as the English second innings is up next.
Wow, what a colossal effort from Tom Blundell and New Zealand as they have gone from conceding a triple-digit first-innings lead to just finishing 19 runs short of England's total. New Zealand went into the Dinner break being 238/8 and lost Tim Southee soon after the resumption. With the score being 247/9, Blair Tickner walked in and displayed great heart to just stick around. Blundell then just laid into the English bowlers and got to a scintillating century before pouring more misery onto the visitors. In the end, he got out playing one-too many big shots but finished with his best-ever Test score and has given the hosts heaps of confidence going back onto the field.

Tom Blundell and Tim Southee will resume their innings for New Zealand. Jack Leach will start the proceedings with the ball in this session. Let's play...
... DAY 2, SESSION 3 ...
England came out after the tea break with a clear plan of bowling short deliveries with Ben Stokes leading the way for them. He was rewarded for his efforts with the big wicket of Devon Conway. Jack Leach then got onto the wickets column dismissing Michael Bracewell cheaply. After that wicket, the visitors were frustrated by the pair of Tom Blundell and Scott Kuggeleijn who kept the scoreboard ticking. Ollie Robinson was brought back into the attack and he handed them a much-needed breakthrough removing Scott Kuggeleijn in the final over before the dinner break. The visitors will now be hoping to wrap the innings quickly in the third session and by doing so, get a sizable first-innings lead. It promises to be another exciting session of cricket after the dinner break. Do join us back at 11.30 am IST (6.00 am GMT) for the third and final session of Day 2.
Session Summary - 23 overs, 100 runs and 3 wickets. Another intriguing session comes to an end at the end of which, it will be England who will be the slightly happier side going into the dinner break. New Zealand were rocked early after the tea break losing Devon Conway as the southpaw fell 23 runs short of his hundred. Michael Bracewell looked to be positive but perished in his quest to up the ante. The debutant Scott Kuggeleijn got together with Tom Blundell and forged a solid recovery to help New Zealand reduce the lead to under 100 runs. However, the dismissal of Scott Kuggeleijn just before the dinner break has pegged the hosts back again. The onus is now on Tom Blundell to bat with the tail and get his side close to England's first-innings total.

... DAY 2, SESSION 2 ...
England failed to start well with the ball as they were a bit off with their lines and lengths. Neil Wagner did trouble them but Stuart Broad foxed him with a slower delivery to hand his side a much-needed breakthrough. It was then Ollie Robinson who struck after being brought on as the first change. The visitors brought on Jack Leach and Joe Root in search of wickets but the duo have not extracted any purchase from the surface and have failed to trouble the opposition batters. The visitors are still in a strong position and will look to assess their game plans during the tea break. Do join us back at 8.50 am IST (3.20 am GMT) for the second session on Day 2.
Session Summary - 28 overs, 101 runs and 2 wickets. We are all set for the play to commence on Day 2. The umpires and players make their way out in the middle. Neil Wagner and Devon Conway will resume the innings for New Zealand. Stuart Broad will start the proceedings with the ball for England. Let's play...
New Zealand are currently reeling with the bat and need a big stand from somewhere to cut into the deficit and they will have a chance to do so as there were scoring opportunities on offer in the first session on Day 1. Devon Conway will be key for them as he has faced enough deliveries to muster up a few important runs here. England do have James Anderson firing on all cylinders at the moment and if he can make the ball talk early on Day 2, then the visitors can really inflict more misery onto the hosts. Will the Kiwis be able to turn things around and get back on level terms on Day 2? Or will England continue to dominate proceedings? We shall find out soon.
Hello and a very warm welcome to Day 2 of the first Test match between New Zealand and England at the Bay Oval in Mount Manganui. Day 1 was filled with a lot of action but it was the visitors who put their foot on the accelerator and made things happen, be it with the bat or with the ball in hand. England will now look to simply extend their advantage.
Right then, a total of 362 runs were scored in 76.2 overs on the first day and 12 wickets fell as well. England continued to play aggressively with the bat and notched up 325 runs in less than two and a half sessions. The decision to then declare was a welcome one and they have got the hosts firmly pushed back on the ropes. Will New Zealand fight their way back into the contest early on Day 2? We shall find out. Day 2 will begin on Friday at 6.30 am IST (1 am GMT) and it sure looks to be an exciting one. You can though join us a lot earlier for the build-up as well. Cheers!
New Zealand will be a bit disappointed with their efforts on the whole as they gave away far too many easy runs with the ball and then, they weren't positive enough with the bat late in the day. Tom Latham got out early playing a poor shot and then Devon Conway and Kane Williamson tried to build a stand. Neither of them ever looked in control and soon after, Williamson fell. Henry Nicholls came in and got out early as well, leaving Conway stranded on one end with the night watchman. Neil Wagner though has done well enough not to get out but the hosts will look to try and better their efforts on Day 2.
Ben Stokes declared with plenty of time remaining in the final session and this decision proved to be a masterstroke as the new pink ball under lights did help the English pacers. It was Ollie Robinson who was brought on as first change in the fifth over who got the first breakthrough and after a bit of resistance from the Kiwis, James Anderson came back for his second spell and picked up a couple of vital wickets. The visitors will now look to press home the advantage early on Day 2 and try and get a sizeable first innings lead.
What an entertaining day of cricket we have witnessed here and it is just Day 1! The game ebbed and flowed but certainly, at the end of Day 1, it will be England who will be the happier of the two sides going into Day 2 as they have simply pinged New Zealand on the back foot via their aggressive approach. The hosts still trail by 288 runs and have 7 wickets in hand.
