South Africa Vs England 1st ODI - England in South Africa, 3 ODI Series, 2023 - summary

Welcome back to the run-chase! The South African players have made their way out to the middle now. Dawid Malan and Jason Roy are the openers for England. Wayne Parnell to start the proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

...THE RUN CHASE…

The last time an ODI took place at this venue was in 2020 when South Africa took on Australia where the Proteas chased down 272 runs with ease. So, surely this venue comes across as a batting paradise. Will England be able to say the same about this wicket post the match? To find out, do join us for the second essay shortly.

Sam Curran is down for a quick chat. He says that lot of their players have not played 50-over cricket for a while but feels that they bowled well and are happy to keep South Africa under 300 here. Mentions that their openers are always going to be aggressive but they need to be smart as well as South Africa have a good bowling attack. Tells that they would like to put pressure on South Africa in the first Powerplay and then take it on from there.

The new bowlers of England could not find any venom off the deck and realised that it is turning out to be a bit on the slower side as well. Although, Jos Buttler was nail-on with his bowling changes which were able to get rid of the opening pair when nothing was going their way. However, it was Sam Curan who was the pick of the bowlers for his economical spell with three scalps to his name.  

The hosts were off to a sparkling start, courtesy of their opening pair. Both got off to starts and looked like they will get to their respective fifties with ease but Bavuma slipped out against the run of play. Soon his opening partner followed suit. However it was the stand between Heinrich Klaasen and Rassie van der Dussen that steadied the ship for the Proteas. The former looked solid with the bat but slipped out on 30. All the batters got off to starts but only Rassie van der Dussen was able to capitalize on it and brought up his fourth ODI century. Once he got his century, Miller and van der Dussen made their intentions clear by taking the aggressive route. The duo stitched a stand of 110 runs which set the platform to go all guns-blazing in the final five. Although, the batters were kept quiet than what they would've envisioned.

South Africa would be a bit disappointed as they could not get over the 300-run mark to give them a psycological advantage but could still feel that they have enough on the board here. England gave away only 18 runs in the last three overs. Some incredible death bowling by England seamers.

Sam Curran to David Miller, out, OUT! CAUGHT! What a brilliant catch this is and Miller is absolutely gutted! Short and outside off. It is a slower delivery and Miller flat-bats it hard and flat towards long on. The ball seems to be travelling over long on but Willey uses his height and takes a catch first at the boundary line. Then as he realises that the momentum is taking him over the ropes, throws the ball in the air. Goes out and then comes back inside the fence to complete a superb catch!

PITCH REPORT - Mike Haysman is near the deck he informs that there was some rain overnight but it is sunny now and the conditions are perfect for cricket.. He soon joins Shaun Pollock in the middle. They inform that the boundaries have been shortened by 10m as the new digital scoreboard has been added to the venue. Focusing on the wicket, Pollock says that there is decent grass covering and it might assist the spinners as the game progresses. Tells that the short-pitch delivery might be hard to handle as the ball might stick on the pitch. Mentions that it would be better to bat first but the ball can come better with the dew later.

Jos Buttler, the skipper of England says that they would've bowled first anyways. Adds that it looks like a good wicket and they would love to chase. Mentions a lot of the guys have been playing T20 cricket lately. It is all about shifting the focus back on the 50-over format. Informs that Jofra Archer is back in the side and also confirms that Harry Brook will be making his debut today.

Temba Bavuma, the captain of South Africa is in for a chat. He tells that they will bat first and they want to put runs on the board in the first game of the series. Mentions that they came together just a day before and they knew that the preparation would be like this and they are looking forward to the challenge. States that this series is important for them to get their combinations right and build towards the World Cup. Informs that they have considered resting their players and Magala is going to play and says that he finds himself at the top of the order and Klassen in the middle order.

Temba Bavuma, the skipper of South Africa says that the things did change quickly. Adds they got the ball to turn, put on the pressure and that got them back in the game. Informs that they could've got it excess of 300 but the wicket got slower which made it difficult. Mentions that they felt that the score was below par but it proved to be enough in the end. Adds that the opening stand for England were off to a flier even better than their owns. Informs that every player played a role in this chase. All the bowlers gave it thier all on the field. Adds that they will take the win as they were in desperate need for points.

Sisanda Magala is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH. He says that he is very happy considering the position they were in and to pull off this win is a great thing for them. Tells that he would be bowling in the middle overs was communicated earlier to him and says that his plan was to bowl stump-to-stump and keep it simple. Mentions that in the first innings, the bouncers were sticking a bit on the pitch and they tried to use that. 

Jos Buttler, the skipper of England in is for a chat. He thinks that they played excellent cricket but is disappointed as they gave away the game after a solid opening stand. He informs that they need to keep going and face the challenges head on. Credits South Africa for their solid comeback as they took wickets at regular intervals. Ends by saying he is really gutted that the could not get over the line.

Time for the Presentation.

In the first half, South Africa started on a brisk note but most of their batters failed to convert their starts but Rassie van der Dussen stood up along with Miller to take them to a par total. Sam Curran was brilliant with the ball for the visitors and they would have backed themselves to chase this total but South Africa showed great fighting spirit and pulled of a memorable win here.

England, well, their philosophy to keep going for their shots might have backfired here. However, that is how they play and that has brought them success over the years but not in this game. They had a brilliant opening stand of 146 and it looked like the game will finish within 40 overs. However, they lost wickets at regular intervals once that opening stand was broken and England kept going for their shots even though the required rate was well below 6 runs per over and once Buttler departed in the 37th over, South African bowling attack turned out too good for the lower order batters.

South Africa looked down and out when England cruised to 146 in the 20th over with all 10 wickets in hand. However, Magala started the fightback and got rid of Malan first and Nortje too joined him with his rapid bullets as South Africa started finding wickets at regular intervals. From 146-0, England were reduced to 152-3. However, the real downfall started when Rabada got rid of Roy who was playing brilliantly and then despite England batting deep, South African pacers continued to charge in and produced incredible spells to pull off an incredible victory in the end. Nortje and Magala were the pick of the bowlers with seven wickets between them and Rabada too got two important wickets. Once again, South Africa have shown why they are one of the best bowling units in the world. 

WOW! What a cracker of a game we have witnessed here! Absolutely incredible scenes here at Mangaung Oval as South Africa have clinched this thriller and have shown here what that World Cup qualification means to them. They have pulled off an absolute heist here and it is on the back of sheer fighting spirit and some top-notch skills!
