South Africa Vs West Indies 2nd Test - Sir Vivian Richards Trophy, 2023 - summary

Now the wicket does have something in it for the bowlers, there is movement and turn, Windies will have to bat well if they are to come close to this score posted by the hosts. South Africa on the other hand will, hope to hit the right lines and lengths and will look for a decent lead.

For the hosts it was once again about the top order. Elgar played a really good knock but Aiden Markram and Tony de Zorzi were the highlights. Both missed out on tons but laid the platform. The middle order and the lower order though did not come to the fore and South Africa will be disappointed with the score they have ended with.

Top, top stuff from the Windies this morning. They have taken the three wickets in no time and overall, have fought back extremely well in the game. This was almost a similar story of the first innings. The South African top order was brilliant. Let me remind you they were around 240 for 2 at one stage and looked all set for a huge first innings score but the Windies bowlers came to life in the last session on Day 1 and today morning. Mayers was brilliant along with Alzarri Joseph! Holder also was impressive. Gudakesh Motie also played his part for the three-fer. Windies will be really happy with the score they have restricted South Africa too.

An eventful Day 1 saw the home team put on a dominating performance with the bat. Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram laid the foundation but it was the latter who scored briskly along with Tony de Zorzi as both continued their good form in the series. South Africa were looking well in control but lost bulk of their wickets in the final session and now even 400 looks hard. Heinrich Klaasen plays a key role from here on. Yet again if you have followed this series throughout, you will notice the final session is bossed by the bowling group. West Indies took five in this one and ended on a brighter note unlike the first two, they even kept the run rate in check. A superb end by them. The start wasn't that good but as the game progressed West Indies became more discipline and accurate which resulted in wickets. Jason Holder by far was their best bowler. Kyle Mayers took two and made things easier for the Windies and the first thing to do on Day 2 is to rattle South Africa out quickly. South Africa won the toss and it turned out to be a good decision as almost every batter made a contribution. Started with Elgar and Aiden Markram, both showed aggression and scored runs freely. Elgar fell but Aiden Markram continued his merry way. He along with Tony de Zorzi put a stand of more than 100 and laid a very good foundation for others to follow but Aiden Markram fell just four short of his century and even Tony de Zorzi missed out on his ton. The middle order didn't restrain and lost wickets regularly. South Africa were comfortably looking for a score around 400 but West Indies have made a good recovery.

By far the best session for the Windies as they have managed to take 5 wickets and keep the run flow in check. They will be really happy to end the day on a high. Jason Holder was just brilliant but Mayers in his last spell took two wickets.

West Indies have been disciplined but the batters have been just too cautious with their play. Kraigg Brathwaite is shuffling his bowlers but is yet to find someone who can threaten South Africa consistently. Gudakesh Motie took the only wicket in this session. We feel he has a big role in the final session coming up but someone else need to step up from the other end. Stay tuned for the final session.

This is turning out to be an excellent start for the hosts. Yet another session where they scored more than 100 while losing just one wicket. They will be very happy with this start. Aiden Markram and Tony de Zorzi initiated the session and both played some delightful strokes to get past respective fifties. Aiden Markram was all set for another century in this series but fell four short. Windies, did not bowl well in this session, they will be disappointed with how they went along. However, there were encouraging signs towards the end as the ball has started to turn but they need to make use of it. They will need wickets and quickly after the break. Will they surge a fight back? We will find out.

Really don't think we need to mention who this session belongs to. South Africa have been brilliant, just brilliant. Windies barring the first five overs or so have been very poor with the ball. They bowled nicely in the initial part but then leaked runs. They were far too short or too wide and Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram cashed in. The two added 76 in no time before Elgar fell. Tony de Zorzi came in and continued to score freely. Markram got to yet another half ton and the platform is laid for a big first innings score.

Temba Bavuma says the pitch is on the dry side and wants to put runs on the board. Adds the pitch might offer pace and bounce but also something for the spinners therefore there are two spinners. South Africa have put on a brilliant team display with the ball and will come out to bat once again feeling pretty comfortable. Everyone in the bowling lineup picked up at least a wicket and it was Gerald Coetzee who was the best of the bunch. They could have had an even bigger lead but they will take it. They will now look to go into Day 3 with no loss. Stay tuned as the South African second innings is up next.

West Indies were under the pump all throughout their innings and the lack of big partnerships has cost them dearly. They will be thankful to Jason Holder who played a sublime knock and was well-supported by Gudakesh Motie at the end. They stitched a partnership of 58 runs at the end and reduced the lead to 69 runs.

That is it, West Indies have been bundled out for 251 runs and South Africa has a lead of 69 runs in the bag. They will come out in their second innings and look to stretch it over the 350-run mark at the very least but it will be interesting to see how the visitors respond with the ball.

South Africa will be happy as well. They have kept West Indies on the back foot but to have the upper hand they have to keep taking the wickets. Kagiso Rabada bowled brilliantly in this session and so did Keshav Maharaj who will have a go again in the final session. We have seen how the final session of Day 1 produce maximum wickets, will it be the same this time around? Will find out soon.

A much needed partnership in the making for the Windies as they were in tatters at the start. They lost two wickets in this session but in the last hour or so, Joshua Da Silva and Jason Holder have batted brilliantly. We saw Holder getting a bit aggressive as spinners are getting some purchases on it. West Indies still have a long way to go but will love these two to bat for a long period.
