Last Wicket: Morne Morkel c Keaton Jennings b Liam Dawson 14 (7) - 119/10 in 36.4 Over
That is it from us today. England were clinical throughout this game and dominated the opposition. South Africa will be disappointed with the way they played and will have to pull their socks up going forward if they are to level the series. Join us for the 2nd Test which will begin on 14th July at Trent Bridge at 1100 local (1000 GMT). Till then, goodbye and cheers!
Man of the Match, Moeen Ali reckons this is one of his best all-round performances. Feels the wicket played great. He admits he made the batsmen play as much as possible. Opines he learned a lot about his action and credits their bowling coach Saqlain Mushtaq, who helped him improve. Mentions he had a clear mindset. States Root asked him to attack and he did that. He further adds no. 7 is a good place to bat as the new ball is due at that time and it makes it easy to score. Appreciates Liam Dawson for his bowling and feels he was unlucky not to pick more wickets.
England skipper, Joe Root says that it is a great start. Feels happy about going into Trent Bridge 1-0 up. Mentions that throughout the game they were good. Reckons that the way Moeen Ali played in the first innings put the pressure back on South Africa. Further adds that he was terrific with the bowl after that. States that everyone contributed throughout the game and deserve credit. Feels that Cook, Jennings and Ballance set it up for them on Day 3. Ends by saying that they batted superbly at the top of the order and that helped them set a match-winning total.
South Africa skipper, Dean Elgar says that it is good to see Faf du Plessis back into the mix. Adds that he is disappointed with their performance this afternoon. Declares that something under 300 was quite gettable. Mentions that he had hopes after bowling England out today. Further adds that they knew it was a challenge on this track and were not up to the mark. States that two to three times on Day 1, they could have had a lot of less runs scored against them. Reckons that if they had taken their chances it could have been different. Adds that this is professional cricket and errors cost them a lot. Opines that a lot of guys in the side have been part of disappointments earlier as well. Feels that the confidence in the group is high. Announces that losing Rabada for a Test is a big loss for them. Adds that another player will have the opportunity to show his skills in his place. Mentions that Philander bowled today and seemed to be injury free. Ends by saying that a lot can happen in the coming five days, so they have to wait and see.
Earlier in the game, South Africa started the proceedings really well but some sloppy fielding and bowling no balls at the wrong time helped the home side crawl back into the contest. Joe Root who was dropped quite early in his innings went on to score a ton and led from the front. The English side never looked back after that, they were always on top and dominated the Saffas in all three departments. Stay tuned for the presentation.
South Africa on the other hand, kept losing wickets at regular intervals and never stitched a partnership together. They could not handle the bounce and spin this track offered. Chasing 331 with a fairly inexperienced batting line-up was never going to be easy and they fell way short of it.
What a performance by England, they have blown away the visitors. Root has started his reign as Test captain with a thumping victory at the home of cricket, Lord's. Moeen Ali, what a game he has had with the bat and the ball. He completed 2000 runs in Test cricket, bagged his first 10-fer and also took his 100th wicket. He bamboozled the Protea batsmen with his spin. He was well supported by the other bowlers.
