India have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead, with just one more game to go. South Africa have a lot to ponder. Will Dale Steyn be fit in time? His presence will sure boost their chances of signing off on a winning note. All eyes would be on the pitch as soon as one gets to the Feroz Shah Kotla. There's no doubt that it will turn, but will it be a rank turner? South Africa will hope that it's not. Both teams have two extra days to prepare for the next game as this contest ended in three days. Looking forward to your company for the fourth and final Test which begins on December 3. Until then, goodbye!
This is first instance in India, where not even one half-century was compiled during the four completed innings of a Test.
This is only the seventh occasion in the history of Test cricket that not even one batsman composed a fifty in a Test, where all 40 wickets fell.
On Day 2 of the third Test, 20 wickets fell. This equalled the record for the most number of wickets to have fallen in a single day in India. In 2004 in Mumbai, when India took on the mighty Australian team, 20 wickets had fallen on Day 3 of the Test.
This is the first time South Africa have lost a series away from home since they came second best against Sri Lanka in 2006. The Proteas were then defeated 2-0 in a two-match series.
Interestingly, two of South Africa's lowest scores since they returned to the Test fold in 1992, have come against India. At Wanderers in 2006, they were bowled out for just 84. Of course, in the first innings of the Nagpur Test, they were bundled out for 79.
South Africa could only muster 79 in the first innings of this Test. Unfortunately for the visitors, that is now the lowest total notched up by any team in India. Previously, Sri Lanka were skittled out for a mere 82 in Chandigarh in 1990.
Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra spun a web around the South African batsmen and piloted the hosts to a series-clinching victory. Now, India have taken an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the series. In a Test match where the spinners ruled the roost, quite a few records tumbled. We have listed some of them for the readers.
Ashwin: 'I thought the wicket slowed down a bit today, it was something that was expected because it was dry from underneath. Faf and Amla fought hard, so we had to do something special. There were two teams out there, one was trying to fight and the other was trying to win - I feel that was the difference between the two teams. A batsman goes out to make a 100 and a bowler goes out to get a fifer, that's how I do it. I thought Mishra bowled a wonderful spell after lunch. We prised out the wickets of Amla and Faf. Mishra got us right back into the game with those two wickets and it was always uphill for them from there on. Any batsman who comes out there and trusts his defence will pose a challenge for a spinner.'
Ashwin is the Man of the Match for his 12 wickets in the match
Kohli: 'It's very pleasing to win the series after having lost the ODIs and the T20Is. They (South Africa) are a tough side to beat. The guys have shown great character. We have been positive throughout the series. Sealing the series in Nagpur feels very good. Ashwin is a world-class spinner, probably the best in the world right now. He's one of the main reasons why we were able to win back-to-back series. He's a consistent performer and it's a pleasure to have him in the side. We expected South Africa to string in a partnership or two. That's how Test cricket goes. We knew we needed patience with the ball. Mishra showed great character when it was tough going and he got two in two overs and I think that was the turning point today for us. It's a challenging wicket. The batsmen from our side applied better in Mohali. We just need apply ourselves in our batting. Sometimes it is going to be bowler-friendly, batsmen might not get many runs. Wickets can be taken by the fast bowlers if reverse swing is put in the right place. Ishant bowled with a big heart today. Delhi would be an opportunity for us to be more consistent as a team. Nagpur has been wonderful, the crowd was great. Hopefully we'll have similar support in Delhi as well.'
Amla: 'It's disappointing to lose. It was a tough match, we tried our best. I think the way the guys fought today was very good. We could have been bowled out for 100 odd in the second innings as there were many plays and misses and a few edges didn't go to hand. But tried to dig deep as long as we can. The pitch was a difficult factor.'
4/4 The Indian batsmen too didn't look at ease and were bundled out for a rather modest total. Shikhar Dhawan was the top-scorer but just like most other batsmen in the game, he perished while aiming for quick runs. Tahir took a 5-wicket haul. Despite South Africa putting up a better show in the second innings, they slipped towards a defeat. Ashwin's match returns for the game was 12 for 98. With this series loss, South Africa's unbeaten streak of not losing a series over a period of nine years was broken. The last time they had lost a Test series was against Sri Lanka in July/August 2006.
(3/3) On Day 2, South Africa caved in meekly and the home team by then had a vice-like grip on the proceedings. When put under pressure, the South African batsmen looked to take the aggressive route on a track that turned out to be a challenging proportion. Barring JP Duminy who to an extent succeeded with the risks he took, rest of them didn't have much of a clue. South Africa couldn't even get to the three-figure mark and posted the lowest total (79) in a completed innings against India in Tests. Ashwin and Jadeja were the wreckers-in-chief. Ashwin ended up with a five-for to his name.
(2/2) Earlier, on a track that turned markedly and kept low, Murali Vijay showed steadfast defence, sprinkled with timing and placement to push the hosts' score past 200. Wriddhiman Saha and Jadeja registered handy knocks. Morne Morkel was impressive for the tourists as he generated reverse swing and scalped a three-for. Simon Harmer, the offspinner, bowled with discipline to snaffle four scalps.
Match Summary: (1/1) The Indian spin trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra bestroded the opposition ranks as the hosts took an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the four-match Test series. The second game in Bangalore was drawn. For a while, Faf du Plessis and Hashim Amla gamely assembled gritty knocks. Both of them played with nous and deliberation to give South Africa hopes of pulling off a memorable win, but they had too much to do.
Vijay: 'It's a great feeling (to win the series). I am very happy at the moment. One more game to go, hopefully we can put up a good performance in Delhi as well. We played our A game here. I thought the first day the wicket was better than how it is right now. Very happy for Ashwin. Still a long way to go. Hopefully he can keep his fitness and do well for India in the future.'
(2/2) After two 2-wicket sessions, the game relatively looked snail-paced until the new ball was taken. Once the 80th over was done, the pitch stuck out its forked tongue to bite a fluent Duminy to hasten the downfall. The lower order had no answers to Ashwin's turn and bounce, and the carrom ball rung the death knell by sending back Morkel. South Africa surrendered by 124 runs at a place they had once hammered India by an innings in 2010. What goes around does come around. A 9-year run came to a sudden stop. Beating India at home is as tough as it gets in cricket and you would need a KP and a Swann to even get close. First series win for Kohli at home and it may just be the start of another era in Indian cricket.
Summary, Day 3: Jamtha's honours board will forever roar South Africa's greatness but had to witness the decoronation today, courtesy Ashwin's hard-fought 15th five-wicket haul and Mishra's open-the-floodgates jaffa to send a defiant Amla packing. The day started with India on top, needing only 8 wickets on a bunsen to seal the series. Talks of an early finish were rubbished by Faf and Amla who channelled their inner Dravids to put up a spirited fightback. The pitch seemed flat and the turn less scary as both batsmen trickled their way to 39 before falling to some Mishra magic. The seemingly long partnership had begun after an impatient de Villiers refused to bide his time and was devoured by Ashwin early in the day.
The Indian team is all smiles. Team director Ravi Shastri is a delighted man. Every team member congratulates Ashwin for his wonderful effort. He leads the players off the field. The South African players wait near the stairs to congratulate their opponents. As Kohli walks inside the dressing room, Ravi Shastri hugs him with a big smile on his face.
