So, that wraps up the formalities of this game. England have taken an emphatic 2-0 lead to seal the Test series with a game to spare. Hope you enjoyed all the coverage of this game. Do tune in for our coverage of the final Test at Lord's on 9th June.
JAMES ANDERSON (MAN OF THE MATCH) says that he and Cook have shared a great time over the years in Tests. Lauds his captain for achieving the milestone. Feels that Cook's highlight is his mental strength and obvious skill. Feels that pitch is irrelevant and opines that accuracy is the key to success. Credits Ali for the big century that propelled England to a big score. Feels that the low temperatures didn't allow the ball to swing. Points out that the pitch flattened out and that wickets were hard to come by. Therefore, Anderson says that he is happy with the success. Praises the squad and support staff for all the support. Concludes by saying that he is trying to make the most of the rhythm he is in at the moment.
ALASTAIR COOK admits that it was a special moment to cross the barrier of 10000 Test runs. Maintains that the game isn't about personal milestones but says that some will come along as the career progresses. Says that he is relieved at having achieved the milestone. Further feels that even though he has achieved this feat, Test cricket will continue to throw challenges at him. Congratulates Anderson for his feat and says that they both made their debuts at the same time a decade ago. Thanks his family for all the support throughout his career. Feels that this pitch was more suited to the Lankans and hence points out that it was a well earned win. Says that series wins are special as they come after a lot of effort. Sticks to his stand on batting first on this pitch despite overcast conditions on day 1. Lauds his pace attack for working their way on this docile pitch. Credits Ali for the big knock that set it up for England. Reveals that England will play the same 12-man squad for the final Test as well.
ANGELO MATHEWS starts by congratulating Alastair Cook, Rangana Herath and James Anderson for their respective milestones in the match. Admits that it's been a tough tour for them so far but adds that his boys fought back hard in the 2nd innings of this game. Opines that they had a good start to the Test on day 1 but states that Ali and Woakes bailed England out. Accepts that the batting performance on day 2 was very poor but is happy with the fight back on day 3 and 4. Points out that there are positives heading to the third Test at Lord's. Doesn't feel that SL have to push the panic button as there are several things to take heart from. Lauds Herath for his career feat and states that the left arm spinner has shouldered responsibilities well after Muralitharan's retirement.
English bowlers were outstanding with leather as they were bowling on the money throughout the game. James Anderson was the pick of the bowler as he got his 21st 5-fer. Woakes was too good with the ball as he managed to pick 2 wickets. In the end, England restricted Sri Lanka on 475 with 79 runs to win. Unfortunately for the Lankan bowlers they hardly had anything to defend. They did got an early wicket of Hales but Cook alongside Compton took his team home. Alastair Cook couldn't score fifty as they had no more to chase but he did achieved a milestone as he now becomes the youngest batsman to score 10000+ runs in Test. Stay tuned for the presentation...
The Islanders in the second innings played well to avoid an innings loss as they managed to give target to the Brits. Hats off to Chandimal as he was outstanding with the bat and scored his 6th Test century. He was well backed by Herath in the end as the latter scored fifty before he fell prey to Anderson. Apart from these two, Angelo Mathews and Kaushal Silva did played nice to provide their batsmen strong platform.
Yet another clinical win for England as they beat Sri Lanka by 9 wickets. The hosts in the first innings put big score on the board courtesy Moeen Ali as he scored unbeaten 155. Also Hales and Root played brilliantly. In the second innings, the home side bowled out the visitors for just 101 and enforced the follow-on.
