World cricket will miss Sachin a lot. He has been one of the greatest batsmen and contributors to the game. I have met him quite a few times. He is a fantastic person. Despite all the success he’d had, Sachin has made it a point to remain humble. He is a thorough gentleman. And that’s how he will be remembered the most.
Not everyone is fortunate enough to get a chance to carry their childhood hero on their shoulder. I was. To lift Sachin Tendulkar after India’s World Cup victory in 2011 was a special feeling.
I first met Sachin Tendulkar in 2002 at a camp in Bangalore where I was selected in the 30-member probable of the Indian team. When he walked past me, my mouth was left open in awe. The star of cricket, someone whom I had idolised for so long, and had grown up watching was in front of my eyes. I didn’t have the courage to initiate a conversation. I just kept on looking at his pads, the way he carried himself while practicing, his bat and the thickness of it. He came up to be and had a brief discussion about my bowling and other general cricket stuff. Over the years, the awe was only to grow big.
Indian batsman Suresh Raina recounts his memories and experience of playing with Sachin Tendulkar.
During the 1988-89 season, Delhi played Mumbai in a Ranji Trophy match at the Wankhede Stadium and that was the first time I came across Sachin Tendulkar. He was 15-years-old then and scored 70-odd against us. On a turning track, where the ball was tweaking square, he played Maninder Singh as if it was a placid wicket.
I first saw Sachin Tendulkar bat when I was sitting with my late uncle and former India captain, Nawab Mansur Ali Khan of Pataudi. This was during Sachin’s first tour, which was to Pakistan in 1989. In the fourth Test at Sialkot, Waqar Younis hit him on the nose by a bouncer. My first reaction was, "Christ! That’s the end of him." The Nawab turned around and quipped, "Nope. Don’t compare them to cricketers of our times.
I have seen Sachin Tendulkar playing since his school days. Back then, Vinod Kambli and Sachin used to plunder tons of runs in school cricket. The first impression I had of Sachin was that he was a solid batsman. But, then it looked like the flamboyant Vinod would turn out a better player.
I had never met Sachin Tendulkar until the third season of Indian Premier League in 2009 when I played alongside him in the Mumbai Indians team. The first time it was just a 'hi' 'hello' meet but as the season progressed, I got to interact more often with him in the nets. He is as focused in nets as seen in match situation. Even when a bowler gets him out in the nets he gets extremely disappointed.
The first time I heard about Sachin Tendulkar was from Hemant Waingankar. It was around 1987. I had left for Australia in 1985 and I had met Hemant when I visited Mumbai. Hemant told be about this exceptionally talented boy — a freak.
My team, the Cricket Club of India (CCI), was playing the Purshottam Shield quarter-final against Shivaji Park Youngsters in the late 1980s. Sachin Tendulkar, who was 14 years old then, was playing for the Shivaji Park Youngsters. That was the first time I watched him bat. He came in to bat at No 4 or so. My colleague, Hemant Kenkre, told me, "Just watch him."
